Ampersand Interior Design
A leading design studio specialising in interior design, interior architecture and bespoke furniture.
We believe that great interior design is all about capturing that elusive quality that makes a home somewhere wonderful in which to spend time. We design for our clients not ourselves so we start each project with a blank piece of paper and create a personal, natural, evolved style rather than a pre-determined “look”. We want our clients to be inspired but at the same time very much in their element.
We custom designed this fabulous book stand and brought it to life for our most recent project.
The client wanted us to design a piece which she could use as a standing work surface, with a lift up lectern, which also contained open display style book storage and could swivel. Our design incorporated all of the above requirements whilst being a fabulous piece of furniture in its own right.

The warm copper tones of this Drawing Room make it an incredibly inviting room. Picture sitting here at golden hour surveying some cracking views of Edinburgh.
A perfect blend of the client’s existing antiques and art, with a new decorative scheme, furniture, and soft furnishings.

The Midas Touch! This stunning detail has to be one of our favourite features of our recently completed project.
Our clients wanted to design a screen to separate two adjoining rooms which could be fully or partially closed but which matched the luxurious design of the Drawing Room. Approaching the design of this bespoke screen we decided to make it a feature in itself adding wallpaper to the panels, which when caught in the sunlight gives the whole room a golden glow. Swipe through to see the screen in full!

After a busy Monday you want to cross the threshold to your home and leave the stress of the day behind. The goal at this past New Town project was to create a wonderfully calming and welcoming vestibule which sets the tone for the rest of the house.

Our New Town project has been a firm favourite with you all if Instagram is anything to go by and we’re so pleased to announce that we have been selected as finalists for the Herald Property Awards 2023 in the Interior Design Residential category.
We loved working on this project and we’re so grateful to see all the hard work pay off!

Some Monday inspiration from our Woodhall House Project.
When a client wants to add more wow factor to an entrance hall which already has vaulted ceilings what do you do … add some hand painted murals of course!

All our designs are rooted in the personality and lifestyle of our lovely clients - meaning if you’re having to spend more time inside than you’d hope to in Summer, hopefully it’s time you can cherish!

At many projects we come up against the age old debate of to tv or not to tv? There are often rooms in the house where ultimately the client would quite like to have a tv but doesn’t want it to be on show.
This was the case at Woodhall House. Whilst the Drawing Room is primarily used as a more formal room, where the clients didn’t want a big screen on show, there were some occasions (like Christmas) where they would end up in the Drawing Room because they were able to fit the whole extended family in. On these occasions the clients didn’t want to rule out being able to watch a film all together.
As a solution we recessed the tv into the wall, adding panelled doors to conceal it, onto which the feature wallpaper was run. As a result the panoramic vista continues uninterrupted, beautifully concealing the tv which is housed behind.

Games night anyone? 🃏🎲
The Snug at Woodhall House is the main room where the family come to relax and watch tv. Bespoke cabinetry was designed to house all their board games, whilst the scheme incorporates rich tones and textures to give the room the desired cosy vibe.

The adjoining room to the Drawing Room at Woodhall House is the Music Room. This room is where the children practice their musical instruments and where all the instruments themselves are kept.
It was important that the room served its primary function, without clutter, whilst still retaining an element of the more formal decorative style found in the Drawing Room.
We designed bespoke cabinetry to house all the musical equipment and arranged the room around a central seating area, where you can either sit to practice, or sit and listen. The seats can also act as overspill for when the clients are entertaining in the Drawing Room. The best of both worlds!

There aren’t many things more heartwarming than a dog waiting to welcome you on the front door step … well that and some fabulous interiors of course!

“This place is immaculate. I have never seen a place of this size done to that standard.” - James Whitson of speaking on Woodhall House in . Definitely one of our favourite design projects to date.

Cabin fever 🐎 Sometimes we’re drawn to a specific fabric and the rest of the scheme develops around that as a focal point. That was the case with this fabric which was selected for the headboard of one of the kids’ bedrooms at Woodhall House.
We loved the way it popped against the cabinetry paint colour, bringing colour, character and texture.

And here it is, our Woodhall House project!
This was a fun one for us to design. The Drawing Room of the property was really only being used for formal occasions and the clients thought its limited use meant it was becoming a room that was ignored in the house. The brief they gave us was ‘to bring the wow’, whilst still retaining an element of the traditional Drawing Room focus.
We think the feature wallpaper selected perfectly fits that brief. Contrasted and complimented with fabulous new soft furnishings and furniture, and existing antiques, the finished effect is a truly beautiful space to entertain or relax in.

The Sitting Room of this project featured in has proven to be one of our most popular recent designs. We thought we’d show it here from another angle.
“Sidestepping trends in favour of personal preferences has produced a home that is unique, characterful and timeless”.

We love the end result of this bedroom at a recently completed project. Swipe through to see the before!
Our brief from the clients for their son’s bedroom was to design a room which could grow with the child, and this cabinetry design can do just that. With clever functional and display style storage, possessions can be swapped out and different items put on display, reflecting the child’s personality as they grow. And you can’t go wrong with the timeless Stiffkey Blue from .

Before and after, follow the design process for this beautiful piece of cabinetry which we designed for a current project.
Offering a more grown up and considered storage solution for our client’s daughter’s bedroom, whilst incorporating a desk space which can be used as a dressing table or somewhere to finish homework.

A beautiful Drawing Room from a previous project in Trochry.
The room incorporates the clients antiques, artwork, and some of the existing furniture which was reupholstered to suit the new scheme. Combined with bespoke cabinetry and colourful soft furnishings the overall effect is a cosy and characterful room.

In the Guest Bedroom of this recent project the elegant colour palette and carefully selected furnishings make the room welcoming and relaxing. The perfect space for any guests to unwind in.
One of our favourite details is the bespoke lampshade designed using fabric, which perfectly compliments the scheme.

Working in Edinburgh New Town properties often means you get beautiful Georgian architectural features, such as the curved wall in this study at one of our past projects.
Here we fitted a bespoke built/in sofa to best make use of the space and compliment the curve of the wall. Paired with a studded wallpaper and an ottoman upholstered in fabric.

Needing a brief interlude from the hot weather? This Master Bedroom from a previous project is definitely cool, calm and collected.

An oldie but a goody! Revisiting the design we did for this kids bedroom at a previous project. Clever cabinetry for built-in storage and fun design features including brass portholes. But the funnest feature of all…definitely the tree house style ceiling hatch which leads to a Bedouin tent cinema room above!

We know how to make an entrance! Your hall gives the first impression of your house and sets the the tone for the rest of your home, so make sure it’s a good one.
Which entrance hallway is your favourite, image 1, 2 or 3?

In this Master Bedroom from a recent project the wallpaper gives a bright and tranquil vibe to the room, whilst accentuating the Georgian ceiling heights. The addition of yellow into the scheme adds interest and gives the room a slightly more contemporary feel.
