Research to Understand Stroke due to Haemorrhage - RUSH

The deadliest type of stroke is caused by spontaneous bleeding from blood vessels into the brain, known as intracerebral haemorrhage (or brain haemorrhage).

The Research to Understand Stroke due to Haemorrhage (RUSH) programme is dedicated to improving the outcome for adults who have diseases that may cause, or have caused, intracranial haemorrhage. This disease affects about 10,000 adults in the UK, and about 2 million adults in the world, each year. Unfortunately, brain haemorrhage remains as common as ever and as most brain haemorrhage occurs in ol

Many congratulations to Professor Rustam Al-Shahi Salman, leader of the RUSH research team, who has been elected as a new Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. This year the Academy has elected 58 exceptional biomedical & health scientists to its prestigious Fellowship and Rustam is one of them! After an exciting week at the ESO - European Stroke Organisation where Rustam delivered a talk on the results of the CARE trial, this is a well deserved honour for the research carried out by Rustam and his team. You can read the CARE results published in https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1474442224000966?via%3Dihub

The team are very proud of the boss!

Antithrombotic treatment after stroke due to intracerebral haemorrhage - Cochrane, A - 2023 | Cochrane Library 03/02/2023

We've updated this Cochrane review and concluded ... wait for it ... more clinical trials are needed!

The good news, though, is that:

1. A bunch of them are ongoing: ENRICH-AF, ASPIRE, PRESTIGE-AF, A3ICH, and STATICH.

2. I now have confirmation that the Antiplatelet Secondary Prevention International Randomised trial after INtracerebral haemorrhaGe (ASPIRING) will be funded by British Heart Foundation, Hartstichting, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santΓ© du Canada.

3. I'm looking for more national leaders and funding agencies for ASPIRING, to start 1 February 2024, with thanks to many so far in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Malaysia. Hopefully more to come...

Even during the ambulance strikes - stroke requires an emergency response. If you see the signs of stroke, you must continue to Act FAST and call 999. It's the best way to get the right support.

⚠️ Even if the symptoms seem to resolve you should continue to wait for an emergency response.
πŸ“ž If you experience a delay, you can call again and ask what they advise you to do depending on your location and the condition of the person.
⌚ You should note what time symptoms first started as this will be vital information once they reach hospital for what treatment they receive.

The FAST test helps to spot the three most common symptoms of stroke – Face, Arms and Speech. But there are other signs that you should always take seriously, you can find out more about the symptoms of stroke here: https://bit.ly/2TJwpLP

Activation of Nrf2 to Optimise Immune Responses to Intracerebral Haemorrhage Haemorrhage into the brain parenchyma can be devastating. Teaching students always teaches you something. Thanks to Annelies Ruijs and Floris Schreuder from Radboud University for asking me to take time out to inspire 25 students from the Radboud University Honours programme in Medical, Dental and Biomedical Sciences. Potentially, it was an existential dilemma, but it reminded me why on Earth I decided to become a clinical academic, what gets me out of bed at 6am (on weekdays!), and the one thing I wished I'd known earlier: we can thrive on failure...
