Introducing Our Newly Appointed Professors of 2024!
Meet the brilliant minds shaping the future of academia, we asked our newest professors some questions to get to know them better.

Hi, my name is Paul Brennan and I am Professor of Clinical and Experimental Neurosurgery

As a clinician scientist, my research spans the laboratory and the clinic, combining molecular, epidemiology and clinical investigation to improve patient care. This means improving diagnosis, treatment and outcomes for the people I meet in my neurosurgical practice, especially those with brain tumours, and traumatic brain or spinal injuries. As founder of former University of Edinburgh spin-out, eoSurgical Ltd, I led innovation in surgical simulation training around the world, and improving surgical training remains a priority

I was asked in the interview for the PhD programme that I was accepted onto, where did I want to be in 10/15 years time. The stock answer of course started with being a Professor, doing impactful research. At that point I had no PhD, I had surgical fellowship exams to sit, a consultant job to get. And now here I am. 15 years later.

My research focused on developing new and innovative technology for medical use, including imaging biomarkers, drug discovery tools and image analysis techniques. An emerging research theme in my group is the development and application of network analysis methods to unravel new human body systems biology called "molecular fingerprinting".

Recently, we had the pleasure of meeting with Dr Bรฉrengรจre Digard to explore a new online hub created by herself and Dr Rachel Davis, dedicated to the topic of Autism and Bilingualism.
Dr Digard offered us insights into how bilingualism can be beneficial for autistic children, shedding light on both the challenges and advantages of learning multiple languages.
She also gave us a detailed look at the hubโs resources, which cater to parents, teachers, and medical practitioners seeking essential information and support.
Explore the website to discover the guides available in multiple languages and access key information designed to help everyone involved in the support and development of bilingual autistic children.

Professor Ian Frazer, whoโs research played a significant role in developing the world's first cervical cancer vaccine, has been honoured with the prestigious Cameron Prize for Therapeutics by The University of Edinburgh. The University awards the prize every two years for a highly important and valuable addition to the field of practical therapeutic techniques to treat illnesses.
Professor Frazer, alongside the late Dr Jian Zhou, both of The University of Queensland, led the creation of virus-like particles triggering an immune response against HPV, forming the vaccine's basis.
Previous recipients of the Cameron Prize have gone on to win Nobel Prizes, such as Dr Katalin Karikรณ and Dr Drew Weissman, who received a Nobel prize for work that led to the development of mRNA vaccines โ the technology that the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines were based upon.
Professor Frazer will present his work at the University's annual Pharmacology Day on 7 November, offering an invaluable opportunity to gain insights from his revolutionary research.
A big congratulations to Professor Ian Frazer for this fantastic achievement!
