Many of us hold an “inner critic” that assesses and judges our actions; it can propel us toward unattainable standards, relentlessly demanding productivity, and failing to meet those high standards can lead to feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness. Our inner critic is the voice that makes us have negative thoughts, can make problems seem larger, can cause us to give up easily and make us feel sad, small or defeated.

Critical self-talk can lead to feelings of shame and low self-esteem, making us feel powerless, helpless, and hopeless. Acting as a judge constantly evaluating and comparing our experiences, our inner critic becomes stronger when we feel helpless, and its power increases when our self-esteem is lower.

Exploring your inner critic in counselling can help you recognise any internalised critical messages and challenge those negative thoughts. This can lead you towards your “inner coach”; the voice that brings positive thoughts, encourages you to keep trying and do your best, and believe in yourself.

We can be uncomfortable with our emotions, seeing them as problems rather than valuable information and an essential aspect of our human experience. Managing emotions can be challenging, especially if we lack guidance or support during difficult moments, and at times, we can all struggle with our feelings.

While suppressing emotions is a common coping mechanism, it can lead to long-term physical and emotional health issues. Emotions serve as our internal compass, providing valuable information about our well-being and the world around us. When we suppress them, we deny ourselves the opportunity to learn, grow, adapt and manage.

It’s important to recognize that emotions are not problems to be solved but signals guiding us towards understanding and self-care. It’s okay to feel and seek support when needed, emotions are part of being human, and acknowledging them leads to growth and healing. Counselling can help you to learn to recognize, identify, and manage your emotions and can lead you towards a healthier outlook on life.

Reacting and responding are two distinct ways of approaching situations and understanding the difference can alter the outcome significantly. When we react to a situation, it may come from a place of anger, hurt or defence. We can all emotionally react to situations from time to time – and that’s ok (we are only human) but if you find yourself stuck in repeating cycles and patterns of behaviour then counselling can help you to identify, explore and respond, leading you toward a healthier outlook on life.

Counselling can help you to cope with emotional challenges and overcome issues causing distress. It provides a safe and confidential space for you to discuss your feelings, thoughts, and difficulties with someone who supports you without judgement. Counselling can assist with many concerns, including: overcoming depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem, coping with bereavement or relationship breakdowns, managing work-related stress, improving emotional wellbeing, navigating life transitions, exploring sexual identity, building confidence, self-discovery and gaining insights into personal challenges.

Addressing our emotional wellbeing doesn’t have to wait until it becomes a problem. By gaining understanding and perspective, it promotes personal growth and self-acceptance. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck in unhelpful patterns, seeking counselling can lead you toward a healthier outlook on life.

The feelings wheel can be a valuable tool for understanding and expressing emotions and can assist in identifying and articulating feelings. Emotions stem from bodily sensations, while feelings are shaped by emotions but arise from our mental cognition; emotions serve as the raw data, reacting to the present reality, while feelings can be influenced by narratives that we may have constructed in our minds based on past events or future fears.

The feelings wheel is often used in counselling to facilitate discussions and self-reflection. Emotions and feelings can vary in both intensity and visibility; when emotions are intense, they can feel overwhelming, making it challenging to pinpoint a single feeling. The wheel is divided into primary emotions, secondary emotions, and tertiary emotions and each layer delves deeper into the nuances of emotional experiences. By paying attention to our feelings, we can navigate them more effectively and find the right words to express our emotional experiences. Emotional vocabulary allows us to better understand our inner world, by recognizing and naming various feelings we gain insight into our emotional state and enhance self-awareness.

Personal values are a set of guiding principles we use to form our perception and inform our decisions. They are the things we believe are most important, can determine life priorities and can influence decision making.

Exploring values in counselling can help increase awareness of any values that may have a bearing on lifestyle and actions, and poses the question: how do you want to show up in the world?

Sensitivity is a basic human trait; everyone is sensitive to an extent, falling somewhere along a spectrum of sensitivity: low, medium and high. Research suggests around 20% of the population are highly sensitive; being defined as those who are more strongly affected by what they experience.

It is less common to be a highly sensitive person, and society tends to be built around people who notice a little less and are affected a little less deeply - this can lead to struggle under stressful circumstances. If you identify with having high sensitivity, you process things deeply and can therefore frequently feel worried, anxious or emotionally exhausted, can be prone to self-criticism and low self-esteem, and may struggle with perfectionism and people-pleasing.

Counselling can provide a way to better understand and make sense of the trait of sensitivity and embrace its strengths, manage any negative emotions, learn coping mechanisms, and deepen levels of self-awareness.

Whilst face to face counselling is the most conventional form of counselling, it isn’t the only option available. Online counselling has grown in popularity, largely due to convenience, and can be more comfortable and accessible.

Online counselling offers the same level of support and confidentiality as face to face sessions, and since online therapy can take place anywhere that offers privacy and an internet connection, it can often be at a more convenient time to suit work and other commitments you may have.

It’s all about you 🤍

The way people view you.

Sometimes I think about the different characters I play in everybody’s story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m a terrible person in some people's narratives and a Godsend in others.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And none of it has anything to do with the person I truly am.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The lens that others view you through is coloured by their upbringing, beliefs, and individual experiences.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people see your bright personality as endearing and others see it as annoying.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people think you’re weak and emotional and others feel safe to be themselves around you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people think you’re rude and selfish and others respect the way you stand up for yourself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people admire the way you take pride in the way you look and others think you’re conceited.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And none of it has to do with who you truly are as a person.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What you have to understand is that you have no authority over how people view you so never try to control the way others see you because the only thing that truly matters when the dust settles down at the end of the day is what you genuinely see in yourself.

I am delighted to announce the official launch of Wishing You Well…

Wishing You Well has been my passion project, a dream I wasn’t sure I would be brave enough to follow and so I am so incredibly proud to be able to say that from Tuesday 2nd July, I will now be offering counselling sessions in my own therapy room, located in the beautiful city of Exeter.

As an integrative counsellor, I am able to truly focus on what will help the individual, through various methods and approaches, to really enable you to get the most out of your sessions.

My diary will now be open from 2pm-8pm on Tuesdays for 50 minute sessions from the therapy room based in Southernhay West, or virtually via Zoom if this is more convenient/ comfortable. Online sessions will also be available at other times.

This truly is a blessing to be able to stand beside you as we work together, so you can continue your story.

If you would like any further information on what I could be able to help with, then please don’t hesitate to contact me for a confidential chat, or have a look at my website:

Thank you so much for all your support.

Love this quote 🤍

This quote by Bessel van der Kolk speaks speaks of interconnectedness of human relationships and communities. Just as we have the potential to inflict harm and destruction, we also possess the capacity for compassion, empathy, and understanding. When we cultivate these qualities and nurture meaningful relationships, we create a foundation for healing, which can contribute significantly to well-being.

Your life is like a quilt
And everybody weaves their share
Some weave huge great tapestries
And some weave tiny squares

Some squares bring you laughter
And some will bring you tears
Some are stitched and sewn by those
Who are no longer here

In places there are threads
From people choosing not to stay
And every time you touch these threads
It brings back all the pain

But every little thread
That weaves its joy and pain and fun
Has stitched a quilt together
Of the person you’ve become

And every little tiny part
Has slowly taught you how
To weave your contribution
Into the blanket you have now

So I know there are squares that comfort you
And some that you dislike
But without them all you wouldn’t have
This patchwork of your life

Choose kindness over being right, for it holds greater significance. Often, what others truly seek is not a clever mind that offers words, but a compassionate heart that listens. Let's choose empathy over ego, understanding over judgment, and kindness over being right. Together, let's embrace the beauty of kindness and create a ripple effect of compassion. ✨

For too long, society has viewed sensitivity as a weakness. Really, it's a strength. If you're a sensitive person, you're more in tune with your environment and your emotions. This heightened awareness helps you better understand and empathize with others, create art and beauty, and notice patterns and details that others miss. It can also be a catalyst for personal growth, because it helps you reflect on your emotions and experiences, leading to greater self-awareness and a more profound understanding of yourself. Don't let anyone tell you that sensitivity is a bad thing.
