Heritage Ability is a Heritage Lottery Funded project working to improve accessibility and inclusivity at 20 heritage sites across the South West. Many heritage sites and collections work hard to make the heritage in their care accessible, but evidence from disabled and Deaf people (who use British Sign Language) suggests that there is more that can be done to improve access. Industrial Action | Great Western Railway 15/11/2022

We have been advised by GWR of strike action on Saturday 19 and Monday 21 November that will affect some train services.

On these dates, RMT members at Network Rail’s signalling centre near Didcot Parkway will be on strike. As this is a crucial part of the network controlling all signalling between London Paddington, the Cotswolds, South Wales, West and South West of England, there will be a reduced number of services.

In Devon and Cornwall, local branch services will be unaffected by the strike and run to the usual timetable, however, longer distance services to London, Bristol, the Midlands and North will be impacted and only run between 0730 and 1830.

We have also received notice that the ASLEF union (train drivers) will be on strike on Saturday 26 November. This will severely limit train services and expectation is a very limited service between Bristol and London, Reading and Oxford, and Reading and Basingstoke.

Further information is available at www.gwr.com/strike

Industrial Action | Great Western Railway On these strike days train services on many parts of the GWR network will be disrupted. Trains on the days following the industrial action may also be disrupted.

A couple of weeks ago Living Options Devon met with Casey at Haldon Forest Park - Forestry England

Casey tragically had a mountain biking accident last year which caused a spinal cord injury resulting in her being paralysed from the waist down.

We filmed a three part series which will be aired in September. The aim of the series will be to, increase peoples understanding and to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries. Advise people of what accessible activities there are indoors and outdoors in Devon. How can locations/venues/activities be made more accessible and what advice and support are out there for people with disabilities.

Making heritage accessible for everyone

A project part of disability charity Living Options Devon.

The South West of England is brimming with heritage; from country parks, to historic houses, castles and rugged coastlines. It’s here to be enjoyed by everyone - but not everyone can.

Disabled and Deaf people (who use British Sign Language) struggle to experience these places because of physical barriers, a lack of accessible interpretation and untrained staff and volunteers.

That’s where Heritage Ability comes in. We’re unlocking the heritage at over 20 destinations across Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, Somerset and Gloucester so that disabled people and British Sign Language users can have engaging experiences with the places that we love. We’re creating Easy Read guides to large print formats, BSL tours and more - connecting people with places. It's thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund that we can make heritage accessible - for everyone.
