Introducing PURE4D 2.0 – Refined facial animation for digital doubles.
The PURE4D 2.0 pipeline is purpose-built to directly translate the subtleties of an actor’s facial performance onto their digital double. It delivers nuanced facial animation without the need for manual polish or complex facial rigs.
PURE4D has already delivered hours of facial animation for leading triple-A franchises, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 & 3 and F1® 21 & 23.
The same technology has inspired the creation of a new short film starring Neil Newbon – 2023's Best Performance winner at the Game of the Year awards.
Due for release this summer, the full teaser is available below.

The face of war...
“Winner Takes All” is an award-winning, CG animated trailer promoting the release of Morefun Studios’ game, Arena Breakout.
Directed by Morten Vinther, the cinematics were created by The Mill.
The trailer use multiple perspectives to tell a story which is both gritty and thrilling, depicting a dark warzone that contains competing special forces units. The Mill used our specialist facial capture service and technology to obtain highly engaging acting performances to drive the facial animation.
First, HMC systems were used to capture the facial performances of the actors simultaneously with body mocap on Rouge Mocap's LA stage. Then, the actors repeated their facial and voice performances in Rouge’s ADR booth while they were captured in even higher fidelity using our seated DI4D PRO system.
The resulting facial animation was stunningly effective.

World-leading animation and VFX studio, Unit Image, created the 2019 animated episode.
It’s an emotionally charged story focusing on the relationship between the two main characters, Greta and Thom, played by Madeleine Knight and Henry Douthwaite.
To achieve a high degree of realism, Unit Image created digitals double of Madelaine and Henry.
The piece features several close-up shots of Greta, exemplifying some of the most intense emotions expressed by a computer generated character.
We provided 4D facial performance capture and processing services, supervising the HMC shoot at Audiomotion Studios, where we captured the performances of the lead characters.
Our team delivered detailed facial animation for the close-up shots of the main character, Greta.
From acting to in-game.
Images like this are great at demonstrating the performance-driven approach to character creation.
Below is an example from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
What's clear, is the exact likeness between the final render and the picture of the real actress performing on stage. Of course, the final video will also reveal the likeness to her performance too.
Together, this 'digital double' approach produces a player experience with heightened authenticity and immersion.
Key moments in the story will become real because the acting itself is real. Just like a theatrical or cinematic production.
It's the power of current-gen video game engines that helps make visuals like this possible. And when they're paired with high-fidelity performance capture technology, the results are astounding.

The real performances driving Quantum Break ⬇
This was a landmark project for our team and the first implementation of our proprietary head-mounted camera system.
After viewing a demonstration of our HMC system in 2014, Remedy saw the awesome potential of the hardware when paired with our high-end DI4D PRO. The studio arranged a successful testing session with the system before starting production on Quantum Break.
While some of the in-game animation was captured directly from the HMC data, much of the data from the live shoots was used for reference, with further sessions completed using the DI4D PRO.
Quantum Break was the first video game project to use DI4D PRO data at scale, and we were able to adapt our workflows during production to match the high expectations.
It's great to look back at shoots and re-live the live-action!
Bringing Rachael to life in Blade Runner 2049.
To match the age and appearance of the actress, Sean Young – who played Rachael in the original Blade Runner (1982) – MPC needed to create and animate a photo-realistic CG version of the actress.
The studio harnessed the power of our DI4D PRO system to track every minute detail of the facial movements of both Sean Young and stand-in actress, Loren Peta.
For a 2017 project, the end result set a high bar for realistic facial animation in VFX – a standard we've continued to match and exceed since.
We wrote a detailed case study which on the project which you can read here: https://di4d.com/project/blade-runner-2049/
Performance Capture in action!
Below is a short clip from the behind the scenes of Capsule Studio’s Farming Simulator trailer released in 2019.
We provided our DI4D HMC to capture accurate facial performance data and drive the animation of realistic digital doubles seen in the final segment.
The beauty of performance capture as an approach to animation is its authenticity. Digital characters come to life inside CG worlds.
This is because the slightest movement or expression is translated exactly onto the actor's digital double.
It's objective in its translation, but emotive in its ex*****on. People can connect fully to the characters in games and cinematics, believing in the performance.
