Man Must Die – The Pain Behind It All (album review)

There’s no better feeling for a metal head than when you come across a new band that crushes it. Then you go and realize they’ve got multiple albums out and you can explore something new. That’s how it was when I googled “best death metal albums in 2023” and stumbled on Man Must Die and their February 2023 release, “The Pain Behind It All”. It’s one nasty, filthy, and brutal album filled with a variety of influences these guys have earned from years in the heavy metal trenches in Glasgow, Scotland.

The production is fantastic and I think provides plenty of room where you can really hear each instrument individually, while at the same time creating that thick wall of crunch that metal fans expect to hear. The artwork on the cover is simple but I dig it and think it fits the vicious release within. There are ten tracks on this one and none of them disappoint! My favorites are “Patterns in the Chaos” and the title track, but this one is packed full of killer material. After three listens, I’m still hearing stuff I missed, so there’s a lot to unpack here.

The two original members, Joe McGlynn and Alan McFarland, have kept the core of the band sound very consistent throughout their 21-year history. I really like the guitar tone from Alan McFarland and Michael Allan. They deliver plenty of balls and provide diversity with some of the tasty harmonics and harmonies. Bassist James Wright holds down one hell of a meaty bottom end and plays incredibly tight with the drummer, Tony Corio. Speaking of Tony, his skills are insane as he pulverizes that drum set. This entire band is one of the tightest I’ve ever heard.

The vocals from Joe McGlynn are savage from start to finish. The emotion and energy he puts into the performances on this album are absolutely brutal. He’s raw and polished at the same time. I hear so many influences when I hear this band and Joe’s voice seems to be the mortar that keeps the whole thing together. These guys go beyond technical death metal, adding in the speed and rawness of punk and hardcore, and they do it at 666 miles an hour!

I’m throwing up the horns for this release and I’m sure “The Pain Behind It All” will end up in my top 10 metal albums of the year. Man Must Die is like a freight train of nastiness coming to destroy anything stupid enough to get in their path!
