FRIENDSHIP
One of the many things we know you will take away with you from HLC is lifelong friendships. Please feel free to use this post today to share photos of happy memories and moments with your friends, throughout your time at HLC. With thanks to India for sharing this lovely photo.
To the Class of 2020
It has been a huge privilege and a great pleasure to be your Head of Sixth Form for these last two years.
Thinking ahead to your future years, there are three pieces of advice that I would like to impart to you all:
1. Have big dreams and ambitions: Harrogate Ladies’ College has prepared you to be resilient and equipped you with the grit and determination to succeed and overcome the inevitable knock-backs along the way.
2. Do not be afraid to fail: keep calm and carry on; learning from your mistakes and persevering.
3. Do not stop learning. A love of learning is a habit that you will need at university, at work, and simply to make the most of enjoying the rest of your lives.
Although, I am very sad to see you go, I am also very excited, because I know that you are all going on to thrilling and very diverse experiences ahead.
Good luck, keep working hard and remember to keep in touch with me in the future.
Best Wishes
Dr Ashcroft
Assistant Head (Head of Sixth Form)

A huge congratulations to Autumn in Lower Sixth for being the winner of the HLC Art competition. Well done to all entrants, pupils and staff; the judges had a tough task deciding on the winner, as the standard of work produced was incredible and very imaginative.
We are all enormously proud of Amelia Braithwaite, College Head Girl and Senior Drama Scholar, who this week gained a place to train for a BA in Acting at LAMDA, one of the very top Drama Schools in the UK! The audition process is incredibly competitive and this is an outstanding achievement, especially, at such a young age. Congratulations Amelia; you are amazing! On Wednesday, our Sixth Form pupils were lucky enough to speak from two very inspirational speakers from the world of Medicine and Investment.
Dr Hud Shaker gave a fascinating talk to our Sixth Form girls interested in applying for, and studying, Medicine. He talked about his experiences during his journey to becoming a surgeon and the challenges along the way. He advised the girls to be prepared to work hard, but also to be sure that they have the skills required to make a good doctor (excellent communication skills being vitally important). The key message for the girls was that ‘you only fail when you stop’ – even if you are unsuccessful the first time, keep trying if it is something that you really want to do. There were lots of questions at the end of the talk and the necessity to gain valuable work experience was also discussed.
Liz Wild, Chartered FCSI and Investment Manager at McInroy & Wood Ltd in Harrogate gave a fantastic talk and interactive session to the girls and inspired them to consider the world of investment as a career choice, one that can be rewarding and fulfilling. She also introduced them to a new charity called GAIN Girls are Investors. Their aim is to raise the profile of investment as an industry for girls and their website a has lots of resources. The website is at: https://www.gainuk.org/
Yesterday, our Upper Sixth Medics had the opportunity to participate in a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) with Dr John Morgan and Dr Ewan McCallum. Dr Morgan is a GP in York and also works in Harrogate District Hospitals (but was also an A&E doctor for a few years. Dr McCallum is an Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic surgeon at Bradford Hospital.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed their MMI and feel that it was excellent preparation for their upcoming interviews at UCL, Liverpool and Dundee universities over the next fortnight. Good luck girls!
Yesterday, the Lower Five enjoyed a ‘Looking Ahead to Sixth Form' morning with Dr Ashcroft. The morning involved break time in the Hub, a Q&A session with Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, Amelia and Lucy, followed by a QR code treasure hunt around the Sixth Form Centre and a talk about Sixth Form Life. The girls then experienced a tour of the Upper Sixth boarding house, Tower, led by Miss Hill and Upper Sixth pupil, Augusta, followed by a delicious buffet lunch.
General Election fever is sweeping Harrogate Ladies' College this week. We have eight candidates standing in our HLC Mock General Election, which is taking place on Election Day, Thursday 12th December 2019.
Our eight candidates span the entire age range in College, from Upper 3 to Upper 6.
Voting will take place on Thursday in the Library from 8am until 2pm and the winner will be announced in Friday's Assembly. Good luck girls!
Last night, Dr Ashcroft took a group of Sixth Form aspiring medics, vets and dentists to a Medical Interview Practice seminar in Harrogate.
During the session, the girls visited 7 different MMI-style stations and were questioned by clinicians and academics on their work experience, ethical issues (professional ethics, efficacy vs. honesty, mentor/mentee relationships), a role play activity about health behaviours, their motivation for applying, a mini essay on 'what makes a good doctor/dentist/vet and a manual dexterity task.
It was fantastic to hear their positive conversations about the experiences they had had on the journey back to College.
In yesterday's 'Be Inspired' session, Nicki Eyre from Conduct Coaching visited the girls to encourage them to place value upon the choices. During the session, Mrs Eyre focused on helping the girls to identify the values in themselves and others, whilst identifying their importance in making decisions.
The session was a great way to conclude our ‘Be Inspired’ Wednesdays for the term. The sessions will resume in the spring term. Thank you to all our inspirational speakers and congratulations to Autumn, in Lower Sixth, who has arranged a Christmas work experience placement with last week’s ‘Be Inspired’ business, Consilia Law in Leeds.
