What are we looking for in a screening mammogram?
We are looking for a cancer as small as a grain of rice. These cancers are so small it could be up to 3 years before you feel it!
As these cancers are caught so early they often need less treatment and are more likely to be successfully treated.
Did you know that almost all women in the UK who has had a breast cancer detected early survive the disease for at least 5 years after diagnosis?!
The current evidence suggests breast screening reduces the number of deaths in the UK by about 1300 a year!
Have a look at this mammogram and the size of the cancer that was detected!
Don't forget we screen at the QE Hospital and currently at Wisbech Tesco! Call 01553 613662!
Why is screening from 50 years old?
We get asked this a lot so I thought I would put some background behind why ladies have to wait until they are 50 to be called for screening.
Your risk of breast cancer is generally very low. Mammograms are more difficult to read in younger women because their breast tissue is denser. So the patterns on the mammogram don't show up as well. There is little evidence to show that regular mammograms for women below the screening age would reduce deaths from breast cancer. (Cancer Research UK)

Breast screening is one of 11 NHS population screening programmes available in England as set by Public Health England. The age range and frequency is set by them rather than us as a Trust.
But don't forget ANY symptoms, worries or problems with your breasts don't hesitate to contact your GP who can refer you to our Breast Clinic at any age!
