Lucy Swain - Specialist in Nutrition & Lifestyle Medicine
Dietary advice can help with the management of chronic health conditions, recurrent symptoms, and weight management in people of all ages.
Dietary and lifestyle changes can help to address chronic disease and ill health by creating healthy change from within the body, rather than symptom control through medications. Simple changes can help to make big differences in health and wellbeing regardless of whether you have been diagnosed with a lifelong medical condition or just suffer from harmless but troublesome symptoms which impact your day to day living.

Healthy carbohydrates provide energy and essential nutrients that can contribute to well-being.
Incorporate options like quinoa, oats, sweet potatoes, berries, and chickpeas into your diet, alongside quality proteins and green leafy vegetables for a balanced, nutrient-rich meal.
Whole grains and legumes provide vital fibre and help maintain steady energy levels.
Not all fats are created equal. Healthy fats are essential for your well-being, offering benefits from brain health to heart protection. Adding healthy fats like salmon, avocado, pumpkin seeds, nuts and olive oil to your diet can make a big difference.
Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon can support memory and cognitive function. Monounsaturated fats such as those found in avocados and olive oil can help to improve your cholesterol profile.
Healthy fats also help your body to absorb certain vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.
Examples include salmon, avocados, seeds, nuts and olive oil. Incorporate these nutrient-dense foods into your diet and experience the benefits of healthy fats.
Green tea has many health benefits because it contains catechins, which have a number of positive biological effects.
Research has shown that long-term green tea consumption can protect against obesity-related diseases, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
Just a few cups a day can make a big difference. Choose high-quality green tea for the best benefits.
Did you know that a glass of orange juice can contain 4-5 times the amount of sugar found in a single orange?
For a healthier alternative, why not try infusing water with fresh fruit slices? It provides a hint of natural sweetness without the extra sugar! 🌿🍓

Your body will thank you!

One of the most influential factors in physical health is spiritual health - an area often neglected in western healthcare management.
Spirituality is an important determinant of health that can affect patient healing, outcomes, and quality of life. Its effects on stress and physiological dysfunction have been widely studied, particularly concerning cardiovascular function. Can spiritual coping strategies help patients manage stress and improve their physical functioning and cardiovascular health? https://hubs.la/Q01BgBV20

This is a helpful video to understand the links between mental and physical health and the importance of taking a 'whole person' approach in healthcare.
The connection between heart health and emotional health has been understood for centuries but the current medical paradigm has separated the realms of physical and mental health into distinct entities which makes it more difficult for patients to receive treatment that addresses the root cause of their symptoms.

If you’re worried about nuts being fattening, know this: Not all calories are created equal. Two hundred calories from nuts and seeds is entirely different from 200 calories from a box of cookies.
There’s the issue of omega-6 fats. We need these essential fats, but not from the gallons of refined oils we consume every year in processed and fried foods. Wild foods are high in omega-3 and lower in omega-6 fats.
As hunter-gathers, we consumed a ration between 1 to 1 and 3 to 1 of omega-6 to omega-3 fats. Now, on a junk food, fast-food diet, that ration can get as high as 20 to 1. Not only do nuts and seeds contain a nice balance of omega-3 fats, but they’re also loaded with vitamins, fiber, protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and antioxidants like vitamin E, which prevent oxidation of the fats. Walnuts, flaxseeds, h**p seeds, and chia seeds are some of the richest sources of plant-based omega-3 fats.
A trial of a nut- and seed- free diet may be useful for certain medical conditions, such as autoimmune disease. But for most of us, nuts and seeds are nutritional and disease-fighting powerhouse superfoods.

Eating healthy food and leading a healthy lifestyle should enhance our life. More energy. Better sleep. Better moods. So many benefits that it can bring. However, some of us can really get stressed out by the details. We start to over analyse. We sweat over every last detail and it can lead to stress and mental discomfort. This completely detracts from any benefit at all. If this happens then stop and have a think about this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just do the best you can each day! Dont be so rigid in your parameters as it doesn't matter THAT much!! If you deviate slightly....it doesn't matter. The key is to do your best each day. Clearly don't get flippant and stop caring, just do what you can in each day. Nobody told your body that you have to be perfect. Your health outcomes will be determined by the general lifestyle and habits that you nurture long term.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Relax. You are doing fine!!.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Despite what popular magazines might say, if you think you can exercise your way to weight loss, I am sorry to say you are in for a big disappointment.
Using exercise to lose weight without changing your diet is asking for failure. You can change your diet and lose weight, but if you exercise and keep your diet the same, you may gain some muscle, improve endurance, and be healthier overall, but you won’t shed many pounds.
However, combining a whole, unprocessed diet with the right exercise does wonders for your health. I don’t want you to get the impression that I don’t think exercise is important.
In fact, if I could put something in a pill that would reverse almost every chronic disease, it would be exercise. If exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time.
Here are 7 reasons why exercise is still extremely important to our overall health:
1. Better insulin sensitivity.
2. Reduced stress.
3. Improved brain health.
4. Reduced risk for chronic disease.
5. Enhanced detoxification.
6. Slowed aging process.
7. Improved sexual function.
Nutrition facts: Are there healthy and unhealthy carbs? This Honest Nutrition feature explores what the research has to say about the facts and misconceptions around carbohydrates and carb-rich and low carb diets.
People often ask me what I keep in my fridge - presumably because they think that it might be a perfect example of what to eat ......
This is a typical view of my fridge, although you can't see everything from this view (there are about 8 avocados behind the cheese🥑) It's not perfect but it's fairly representative of the kind of things we eat in our house on a regular basis.
We also have a number of skilled bakers in our house, and the products of their labour are generally not kept in the fridge. These less 'healthy' treats are also a regular part of our family life - always homemade with small portion sizes encouraged! 🤏😋
Happy to engage in conversation with anyone who wants to discuss the pros and cons of my choices and whether I would recommend them to anyone else!!😁
