Brownlee Fitness 🤝 : Leveraging the Power of Smart Swim Goggles

We are excited to announce our new partnership with FORM Smart Swim Goggles.

But these aren’t just any Goggles…

The Smart Swim 2 features a built-in heads-up display which captures and displays key metrics such as stroke rate, distance, pace and heart rate.

The goggles also display guided workouts synced from TrainingPeaks, while HeadCoach™ can assess your technique and provide real-time coaching.

Plus, in open water, the Smart Swim 2 contains an in-goggle digital compass called SwimStraight™, which provides real-time directional guidance to ensure faster, more efficient swims.

(Oh, and this is all race-approved by World Triathlon and British Triathlon.)

We’re big fans of the goggles at Brownlee Fitness, and our coach Nick Harris even took them for a test drive.

(Or should that be test swim?)

Nick said -

“Upon using FORM goggles I have been very impressed with the amount of data I can access in the display. I have dropped my average swim session pace by 10 seconds per 100m in just 4 weeks!”

“The goggles keep swimming interesting, and being able to see what you’re doing and follow a session in real-time with immediate feedback is a total game changer!”

Have you heard the story of Milo of Croton?

According to Greek mythology, Milo was a wrestler with immense strength.

The story goes that as a young boy, Milo was out walking one morning, when he noticed a young calf, separated from the herd.

Worried for the calf’s safety, he picked it up and carried it back to be with its bovine companions.

This feat exhausted him, and he needed to lie down to rest.

The next morning when he was out, he saw the same calf straying once more, so he repeated the drill.

This time, the feat was still hard, but it wasn’t quite so tiring, and Milo realised something -

By carrying the calf on day one, his body had forced him to adapt, and get stronger.

Milo then repeated this feat, every day, until eventually, as a man, he was carrying the same calf…

But now as a fully grown bull, without the task every really feeling exponentially more difficult.

Despite this story being centuries old, it’s a great analogy for modern day strength and endurance training.

When you expose your body to a difficult task, you force it to adapt, and to get fitter and stronger.

That’s the underlying principle of what’s known as “progressive overload.”

This makes sense. But there’s a problem.

Because while Milo’s method works in theory, in practice, there’s one huge, glaring hole:

You can’t get fitter and stronger all the time.

In Milo’s story, his strength gains were linear.

But that’s not how the human body works.

You actually need lighter weeks, and periods of lower volume and intensity to progress optimally.

This is why you’ll often see an easier week in an athlete’s training plan, once every 4-6 weeks.

While these easier weeks might seem like a step backwards, they’re actually vital for -

Recovery
Staying injury-free
Becoming fitter and stronger long term.

Congratulations Jen Russell! 🔥

In Jen’s Words,
“ Swim: I love a pulsed start, so this was great for me. I found a good pair of feet to draft on, but ended feeling I could have pushed a little harder overall. Just over 29 mins in the swim, so happy with the time.
Bike: great closed roads course. I was really pleased with my splits and took 3 minutes off last year’s time. More time spent in the aero position and greater attack in general.
Run: it was baking hot by the run. I opted for a measured approach as my running hasn’t been fantastic this season. I’m super happy with a season’s best 10km (54:43), 2 mins faster than my Dambuster run and no issues with PT or AT!

3rd in AG, 73/557 female. A race I’ll definitely do again next year. Loved it. Can’t wait for the final race of the season!”

Congratulations Leigh Stace 👏🏻

In Leigh’s Words on how the Race went,
“This year’s Holkham Half was a training event for my upcoming Copenhagen IM having had a tough experience at the Nice IM, struggling mentally on the run. The lake swim went well, with 2 swimmers entering the water every 5 seconds. Swim section completed in 39:05.

Severe backpain on the bike due to last minute adjustments meant a pitstop at 50km to re-focus but the course is a great undulating loop, well signposted and well marshalled. Bike section completed in 2:50:50.

Felt mentally strong for the run as I started the 1km climb out of transition, staying within a specific heart-rate zone & stopping at all aid stations. The 3-loop course is almost flat (apart from the 1km slight climb) and the support around the course is great. Completed the run in 2:05:06 with a strong finish and mental success.”

Congratulations Chris 🔥🔥

In Chris’s words,
“Overall I placed 13th and 7th in my AG in a time of 2:19:54. The winner was 2:14:02 and my AG winner was 2:16:53. I’m not a million miles away but if im honest I feel like I’m lacking a little bit to get in the mix. This year was a build year after not racing much for 2 years so all is ok and making progress.

Thanks to Nick and the team for the support as always. We’re getting there. 👏👏”

11/07/2024

Congratulations Nathan!

In Nathan’s words:
“My race (Bolton 70.3 triathlon) went really well thankyou. Loved the whole weekend and i was happy with my performance “

You can put in all the long, steady miles you like…

But if you really want strong, powerful cycling legs, you need a more sophisticated approach.

In fact, there are 5 specific things you can do to increase your cycling power:

Discover what they are here.

I get it -

It’s so easy to get carried away with those big weekend rides, and enjoying the social aspect of riding.

At Brownlee Fitness, we’re big on our athletes actually having fun while they train.

And group rides are an amazing way to do that.

But at some point, if you’re serious about performance, you need to look a little more closely at your training.

And that might mean doing a few things you don’t really love doing which have a positive effect such as.

Solo TT sessions on the bike by yourself are training you physically to improve stamina, and mental resilience for your racing when you need it the most!

Which is why strength work is so important.

Or plyometrics.

Or even a nausea-inducing interval/ tempo session.

Anyway, I won’t give away the entire article in this email, but if you’re looking to really take your cycling to the next level -

Congratulations Kris who Podiumed at the Ultimate Ironman Triathlon in Ellesmere 🔥

In Kris’s words,
“A long day. 10:54 for a slow race, long swim - just under 4km, bike was ok but affected by wind, traffic and I got cramp on last lap, run was my usual slow one but I ran all the way (never walked). Rewarded with 3rd fastest male so none too shabby for old bloke.”

28/06/2024

Massive Congratulations to Penny for Qualifying for Nice! 🔥

In Penny’s words,
“I also managed to bag a qualification for the World Championships in Nice, so training must continue 🤣. I now need to sort out my nutrition. Thanks for the help Brownlee Fitness.”

Want a simple way to improve your endurance training? 💪

Then you might want to consider naturally enhancing your Glutathione levels 📈

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that plays several key roles in supporting endurance athletes and their training. You might want to consider Al and Jonny’s method to naturally enhance their glutathione levels with Max’s patented, clinically proven technology - RiboCeineTM.

✅ Immune Support:

Ever get sick or rundown during big training blocks?

That’s because intense training can suppress the immune system, increasing the risk of illness and infection.

Glutathione supports the activity of immune cells and protects against damage to immune tissues, helping you stay healthy and consistent in your training.

✅ Energy Production:

Glutathione is involved in the regulation of cellular energy metabolism. It helps to optimize mitochondrial function — the powerhouse of cells responsible for generating energy.

✅ Antioxidant Defense:

Endurance training can lead to increased production of free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress and damage to cells.

Glutathione neutralizes these free radicals, minimizing muscle fatigue and improving recovery during endurance training.

✅ Muscle Recovery:

When you train hard, your body undergoes significant stress and needs support to recover effectively.

Glutathione promotes muscle repair and recovery by supporting the body’s natural defense mechanisms against physical stress.

Glutathione isn’t a substitute for good training, consistent nutrition, adequate hydration, and getting plenty of sleep and recovery…

But it IS a simple way to bolster your body’s natural abilities, and enhance your energy and endurance to give you that extra 1% edge.

Amazing Race for Pete yesterday 🔥

In Pete’s words,
“🏅 Yesterday was a monumental day as I completed my debut middle distance triathlon and secured 2nd place! 🥈 Immense gratitude to the incredible Brownlee Fitness training plan and coaching team—your guidance and expertise have been invaluable. Thanks to your support, I also hit qualifying times for two GBR 2025 events! 🇬🇧

From the early morning swims to the challenging bike rides and intense run sessions, every bit of effort paid off. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and encouragement from the Brownlee team. Looking forward to the next steps and continuing this amazing journey!”

Amazing Work Matt!

In Matt’s words,

“Over the winter my FTP increased by 40w. That’s more than I ever expected to gain in such a short time, and I put it down to the weekly Hares & Hounds and Team Time Trials with Brownlee Fitness on Zwift.

Not only have I boosted my FTP, but I’m now also a lot more confident to push hard on the bike and still run well after. Confirmed - last weekend I ran a 3 min 10k PB off the bike at my first race of the season.”
