Why do I have rats in my garden?

90% of all the garden infestations I am called to investigate are due to bird feeders. You may not have one but one of your neighbours probably has. The food you give the birds is also just what a rat would like to eat.

I have decking in my garden will this attract rats?

It's not the decking that has brought them into the area, it's the food that you or one of your neighbours is leaving out for them. Once the rats find a regular food source they often look to move in close to it and decking makes a great place to shelter.

How do I get rid of rats in my garden?

Simple stop feeding them, after a while the rats will usually move on. This is unless they are feeding in a neighbouring garden and sheltering in yours. If this is the case please don't start throwing rat poison everywhere, rat poison doesn't just kill rats!!! Birds, other wildlife and your neighbours pets are just as likely to succumb to the rodenticide as the rats are.

I like feeding the birds though...

If you like feeding birds but don't want rats in your garden. Try to using a spill proof bird feeder, don't throw seed or other bird food directly on the ground. Ensure any spilled seed is swept up at the end of the day.

You may have been told that wasps won't build a nest in close proximity to another nest. This is not true, I attended 2 great examples of this today. Two separate wasps nests within a couple of feet of one another.

It's been a slow start to the wasp season for pest controllers across the country this has been down in part to the terrible weather we had during April and May.

However, I'm now getting quite a few calls to book wasp nest removal treatments. Most of the treatments so far have been straightforward removal of visible nests in garages, sheds and suchlike.

However, now that number of wasps per nest is increasing I'm getting calls for nests in wall cavities, soffits, air vents and roof spaces. These nests only get spotted when the wasps are noticed entering and exiting, as the nest structure is out of view.

If you notice wasps flying in and out of a hole in a wall never block or attempt to block it up. By doing this you aren't, as many people think, preventing the wasps from entering you are preventing them from leaving. The nest is on the other side of the hole, its been there for a month or so and there could be thousands of wasps on the other side. If you block the entrance I can't inject the nest with insecticide, and more importantly they "will" find another way out, and you don't want thousands of angry wasps flying around inside your house.

Its buzzy flying thing time of year again.

please share.....

So you have some buzzy things in or close to your home what are they and what can you do about it?

Are you seeing just a few going into holes in the brick work? Masonry Bees, nothing to worry about. Very friendly they are your new pets for the next 4 weeks :) they don't sting and should be gone soon, (April May).

If what you are seeing looks like thousands of even tens of thousands and if they have just suddenly turned up, what you have is a honey bee swarm. Call a local beekeeper who will be more than happy to re home them (May June July) 🙂

Are there dozens of them buzzing around one point randomly? This is bumble bees, don't panic they are friendly. The random flying about thing is the male bees waiting for a female to emerge from the nest this will only last a few weeks, then you will have reduced activity until late summer bumbles are pretty chilled out and will not attack you or eat your children give them space and let them polinate your flowers 🙂 ( june, july)

I don't see active wasps nests until july so anything before this time is unlikely to be anything to worry about.
