Introducing Banon 🧀

Coming from the market-town of Banon, just north of Aix in southern France, Banon is a soft, unpasteurised cheese made from goat's milk. Banon also known as Banon à la feuille and is a very old, traditional cheese said to date back to the Gallo-Roman era. The cheese is wrapped in a case of chestnut leaves, held in place with raffia. Cheesemakers gather the leaves in autumn when they fall off the trees.

Slightly nutty and slightly dry, it’s fresh and pairs great with a fig chutney. Come try it at Funky Cellar! 🍷🧀

This week, we chose to highlight a very special wine 🍷

This wine is a 100% Chardonnay cuvée, from old vines grown in the Mâcon region on slopes of limestone marls with very shallow soil. Green apples, wax and stone fruits predominate, as well as some zesty citrus. A saline, minerally edge on the palate and some nice acid maintain the fresh approach.

Jean Francois Ganevat is one of the benchmark vignerons of the Jura region. These wines are coveted the world over for their otherworldly clarity and precision. They are vivid and vibrant and made in small quantities. They stand as a beacon of quality and craftsmanship in the natural wine world.

Pont L’Eveque is a French cheese from Basse Normandie, and was originally made in the 12th century by monks. It’s believed that its name is derived from 'Norman abbey’.

Made from cow's milk, this cheese is manufactured throughout the year. It’s square shaped and is of pale yellow colour while its rind has white-orange colour. A soft and very rich cheese with creamy and full-bodied flavour, Pont L’Eveque tastes best when eaten at room temperature.

🍷🕺 Radikon

Made from arguably one of the best orange wine makers in the game, Radikon Slatnik is made of 80% Chardonnay with the rest Tocai Friulano grapes. It then goes on to spend 12 days on skins before it’s aged in old oak for 18 months. A deep, complex, rich and savoury orange wine with light floral aromatics and earthy, oaky notes on the palate.

first started in 1979, but is from a family and land that dates back to the late 1800’s. They pioneered the movement towards both natural and orange wines, and as such are known as the Kings of Orange Wines.

Camembert is one of the most popular French cheeses and loved the world over.

Made from unpasteurised cow’s milk, this iconic soft cheese from Saint-Loup de Fribois in Normandy has a wonderful salty and earthy aroma. As it matures, its soft creamy centre develops rich buttery flavours and a gorgeous runny texture. It is covered by an edible white blooming rind that also adds additional flavour.

Perfect on any cheese board, but also delicious when melted with roasted walnut and truffle paste or with fig jam, and served with a warm, fresh baguette.
