The UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates globally, with many mothers stopping by week six due to a lack of support. According to Claire Tchaikowski, CEO of the Bristol-based social enterprise Human Milk, more needs to be done to help new mothers succeed in breastfeeding.

Despite 80% of UK mothers starting with the intention to breastfeed exclusively, less than half continue beyond six weeks. More resources and targeted support is essential, particularly during the postnatal period when new mothers need it most.

A recent report by the Food Foundation highlights a troubling decline in the health of UK children. The average height of five-year-olds is falling, obesity levels have risen by almost a third, and the incidence of type 2 diabetes among young people has increased by over 20%. Aggressive marketing of ultra-processed food and high levels of poverty are key drivers of this health crisis.

Health experts warn that without immediate intervention, we risk burdening a generation with avoidable health conditions and overwhelming the NHS. It's time for policymakers to prioritise children's dietary health and ensure all children have access to nutritious food.

A recent study suggests an urgent need to test pregnant women for gestational diabetes before 14 weeks, instead of the current 24-28 week timeframe. The findings, published in the Lancet, reveal that earlier testing and treatment can significantly reduce pregnancy and postpartum complications for both mothers and babies.

Professor David Simmons of Western Sydney University emphasises the necessity for a major shift in how we diagnose and manage gestational diabetes. Current practices may not be sufficient to mitigate the risks associated with this condition.

A recent Harvard study reveals that chronic loneliness can increase the risk of stroke by up to 56%. This research, published in eClinicalMedicine, highlights loneliness as a significant public health concern. The World Health Organisation has identified loneliness as one of the most pressing global health issues, affecting overall health, wellbeing, and development.

Researchers emphasise the importance of recognising and addressing chronic loneliness, particularly among adults aged 50 and above, to mitigate its impact on stroke risk. As loneliness becomes increasingly acknowledged as a serious health threat, it is crucial to develop interventions and support systems to combat this growing issue.

Thousands of NHS cancer patients in England will soon have access to trials of personalised mRNA vaccines designed to target and destroy remaining cancer cells, thanks to the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad. This groundbreaking initiative involves 30 hospitals and aims to reduce cancer recurrence.

While this trial, co-developed by BioNTech and Genentech, marks a significant step forward in cancer treatment and research, it’s essential for these clinical trials to include diverse and representative participants to ensure the findings are applicable to the wider population and to address existing health disparities. As we advance in medical research, inclusivity in clinical trials is vital for achieving equitable health outcomes.

A recent study by the University of Birmingham, supported by the British Heart Foundation, has uncovered alarming health disparities in heart failure outcomes. The research, analysing data from over 16,700 patients, reveals that marginalised ethnic patients are 36% more likely to die from heart failure compared to White patients. Additionally, those with atrial fibrillation from diverse backgrounds face more than double the mortality risk.

The study also highlights the critical issue of under-representation in clinical trials, with 89% of participants being White. This research underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and inclusive healthcare strategies.

Healthcare professionals are raising alarms over the rise of poorly evidenced alternative treatments targeting women online. Former breast surgeon Liz O’Riordan, who faced misinformation after her own cancer diagnosis, emphasised the dangers of these treatments, which can interact with prescribed medications or obscure serious symptoms.

Similarly, Molly Fenton of Love Your Period noted the challenge of navigating credible information on social media, particularly for young girls. Diane Danzebrink, founder of Menopause Support, discussed the commercialisation of menopause and the flood of unregulated supplements.

This growing trend underscores the need for accurate information and professional medical advice to safeguard women’s health.

The Birth Trauma Inquiry has unveiled concerning realities within the UK's maternity care system, exposing a pattern of poor care too often accepted as “standard”. With over 1,300 women sharing harrowing experiences of neglect, medical errors, and systemic deficiencies, it's evident that immediate action is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of mothers and babies nationwide.

The call for a comprehensive overhaul of maternity and postnatal care, including the establishment of a maternity commissioner and the assurance of safe staffing levels, underscores the urgency of addressing these longstanding issues. It’s imperative to prioritise the implementation of reforms that guarantee respectful, supportive, and equitable childbirth experiences for all.

New analysis by The Guardian sheds light on racial disparities in perinatal mental healthcare in England. According to NHS figures, Black mothers are over twice as likely to be hospitalised, pointing to systemic inequalities that persist within the healthcare system. This underscores the urgent need for action to address structural barriers and improve access to mental health services for all mothers.

Dr. Katie Merwick highlights factors such as socioeconomic disparities and cultural attitudes towards mental illness as contributing factors. Addressing these disparities requires a comprehensive approach, including increased community support and better training for healthcare professionals.

Recent study by QualityWatch exposes disparities in cancer diagnosis in England. Marginalised ethnic groups and young people often require more GP visits before receiving a cancer diagnosis, highlighting systemic barriers in access to timely healthcare. Dr. Liz Fisher underscores the critical role of early detection in improving outcomes for patients. Urgent action is needed to ensure equitable access to cancer care for all demographics.

As the NHS strives to diagnose more people for cancer at an early stage, addressing these disparities is essential to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, receives prompt and effective cancer care.
