Becoming forgetful could be a normal part of ageing, but if you are experiencing memory problems that are causing you or your loved ones concern, you should see your GP.

We’re sharing the Alzheimer’s Society’s top tips for your first GP’s appointment 👇

✍️ Write down your notes in advance. This will help you remember what you wanted to talk about. Keep a diary of the problems you’ve been having to help your GP understand how your symptoms are affecting you.

💙 Use words and descriptions that feel right to you. Don’t be afraid to use phrases that show how bad things are for you, such as ‘I’m not coping with…’ or ‘I’m concerned about…’.

🫶 Bringing a friend or family member to support you during your appointment can help you remember what was said and also helps the GP to talk to someone close to you, as they may have noticed changes that you haven’t.

💙 Be honest. You may find it hard to open up about mistakes you’ve been making with your memory, or behaviour changes you’re unhappy with. But your GP is used to having this type of conversation and will respect and support you as a patient. Their main aim is to find out the cause of your problems.

During Dementia Action Week, we are encouraging RBKC residents to pursue a diagnosis if they or someone they love may be experiencing cognitive decline. Together, we can improve dementia diagnosis rates.

According to the latest evidence from Alzheimer’s Research UK, up to 40% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing 12 risk factors in our day-to-day lives.

These risk factors that affect our brain health are wide-ranging and span our entire lives.

The 12 risk factors are:

Air pollution
Low education
Hearing loss
Smoking
Hypertension
Social isolation
Traumatic brain injury
Unmanaged high blood pressure
Low physical activity
Excessive alcohol consumption
Obesity
Type II diabetes

Taking action today can have an impact on tomorrow 💙

We encourage our Bluebirds to share their stories and talk about how movement has impacted their mental health. This could be anything from getting out of the house more frequently through to completing a physical challenge you set for yourself.

A diagnosis of dementia ensures treatment, support, care and understanding are accessible.

But one in three people with dementia are living without one.

We stand in solidarity with the Alzheimer’s Society, shining a spotlight on the importance of diagnosis this Dementia Action Week (13 – 19 May).

Throughout the week, we’ll explore dementia statistics and stories to encourage RBKC locals to seek a diagnosis if they think dementia may be affecting them or someone they love.

Ryan Reynolds on Michael J Fox for Parkinson's Awareness Month:

I know Michael J. Fox. Like, I know him pretty damn well. He’s funny. He’s warm. He’s handsome and intensely smart. He also falls a lot. Not just because he has Parkinson’s. He falls a lot because he’s unafraid to fly.

I met Mike 17 years ago. I’ve watched him raise the bar for purpose and passion. It’d be kinda lazy to simply characterise him as the greatest champion of Parkinson’s research on the planet. He’s someone who helped my dad, along with millions of others, feel less alone. It’d be kinda lazy to simply regard him as a movie star who shaped the lives of people all over the planet with a uniquely electric wit and self-aware charm. He’s the sum of these beautiful parts. And so many more.

Last year I watched Back to the Future with my 8-year-old daughter. It’s become her favourite film. And for now, that’s enough for me - and her. One more kid from one more generation sees what I saw.

I know how lucky I am to call Mike a friend. She still has no idea that I know him. I don’t need to teach my daughter the level of compassion Mike has mastered. Or teach her to tell stories the way Mike tells stories. I need to teach her that it’s OK to fall a lot. It’s the absolute best way to know you’re flying.

Congratulations to Melissa on her 10th anniversary service milestone! We are fortunate to work alongside such a dedicated, intelligent and capable Bluebird.

Melissa tells us, "I remember when our Managing Director Peter had just started the company and was caring in the community. Bluebird Care has grown so much since then but it's retained its values and I still love it!"

Registered Manager Clarissa says of Melissa, "She works well with her customers, determining not just their preferences but what makes them tick to develop strong professional bonds. She communicates brilliantly and takes things in her stride. Melissa has worked with us through her pregnancies and motherhood... we've always been flexible with her preferred working patterns. This flexibility has helped us retain an exemplary person and carer! She is keen to train as a nurse now that her children are growing up and we will support her in this exciting new journey."

Our Easter-themed quarterly team meetings took place in Paddington Arts last week, with every Bluebird rostered to attend 🐰

We reviewed policies, discussed case studies of best practice, had lively conversations and every Bluebird was given an Easter basket to take home 🍫

After an operation at the Lister Hospital, Mr P and his medical team knew it would be important to ensure a smooth transition to his Knightsbridge home to safeguard his recovery.

Mrs P, his wife, told us:
