Sunny Art Prize Past Winner Feature Series 4
II Winner of 2020, Olana Light

Olana Light is a multidisciplinary artist based in Hampshire. She has an MA from Goldsmiths (2020) and a BA from Southampton Solent University (2017).

When asked to select a piece of work she felt best represents her as an artist, Olana believes her 'Fly Like a Butterfly' best captures the essence of who I am. Wearable sculpture, performance, installation, and film are the focus of Fly Like a Butterfly.

Nature is a source of inspiration for Alana, she seeks to change her audience’s perception of how the world uses its resources and to think more deeply about how lifestyle choices affect the planet. She explores the theme of metamorphoses and change, through a series of large-scale wearable caterpillar and butterfly sculptures largely constructed from natural materials, to highlight the issues of psychological transformation and identity.

III Winner of 2020, Frances Gynn

Featured Series: ‘Ghost Nets’
Ghost nets are derelict fishing gear that has been lost, dumped or abandoned. The image is initially benign and ethereal, floating gracefully through the open sea. However, a more malign consequence becomes apparent - they are ubiquitous in our oceans and a major cause of plastic pollution.

A word of advice from to Sunny Art Prize 2024 contestants:
"Make work that you care about and give yourself time to live with it before entering."

German School | Portrait of a Boy

Pastel on toned paper
Date: Around 1910
Measurements: 34cm x 23cm
Condition: Slight traces of age, framed behind glass
Price: £100 (exc. VAT)

The history of the artist and the pastel portrait has been lost in time, but art critics have recorded the artist came from the German School (a group of artists who were part of the New Objectivity Movement and focused on portraying realism in art). The artist was most likely a professional portraitist. The pastel drawing is an endearing portrait of a young boy with a large, black bow around his neck – a beautiful and masterful portrayal of youth.
