SADIE HENNESSY

‘Tasty Tasty’

11 - 15 September

Private view Thursday 12th 6 - 9 pm

Tasty Tasty is an installation exploring themes of constructed femininity and ‘allure’. It reflects on the efforts required to achieve ‘natural beauty’ and wonders what happens if you ‘let yourself go’. The installation is filled with 2D and 3D work, plus light works and audio. Tasty Tasty takes its name from a line in the 2006 song Fergalicious by Fergie, of the Black-Eyed Peas.

Sadie Hennessy is a multi-disciplinary artist, notable for using dark humour in her work. She trained at Dartington College of Arts and gained her MA from Central St. Martins. She is the former Screen Print Fellow at the Royal Academy and won the Jealous Graduate Art Prize for her MA Show. She is the Chairwoman of the Whitstable ANchorage Klub, hosting the famous Whitstable End of the Pier Show, and the Salon de Ballon.

Tasty Tasty will be open from 1pm on Wednesday 11th till 7pm, and then every day till 7pm on Sunday. PV is Thursday 6-9pm.

I will be showing a new body of drawing, painting and printmaking that have been produced over this past year. I hope some of you will be able to make it. I can’t wait to see you there.

“Everything flows” :Τα πάντα ρει - Ta Pánta Rhei
[Heraclitus]

Using traditional processes in unconventional ways, this work hybridises painting and printmaking, using pressure and touch to construct the image into an oil painting using woodcut in layers over a lengthy period of time.

The image is nonsensical and nonspecific having derived from found and extracted old wallpapers that explore an incongruous placement of eclectic tastes from past eras fabricated into its symmetrical dissection. Presented as an internal landscape

I had a thoroughly great afternoon and I was super happy to be in an exhibition with my son for the first time ever!
although he was in France having a nice time doing cooler stuff than hanging out at an exhibition with his mum….. 😂

Seriously though, it is pretty special to put on completely open call exhibition. I was thrilled to be exhibiting next to work by local youngsters.

It really makes you appreciate landscape painters throughout history, when you are miles from anywhere and experience heat, ants, hunger, wind, bright light, or fading light, and in the forest, a fear of bears, wolves and boars creeping up on you! 40 brown bears there and increasing. A wonderful place.

A part of my series using a metaphor of the militarised girl guide for crowd thought, I use animism and animal symbolism, and iconography in general to reflect on our subconscious interpretations. The frog, or on this picture a bullfrog is a distraction to what appears to be a prescribed activity for the girl guide. Does it make her think of other things? I am doing a lot of work on paper at the moment before I have the strength to return to canvas work. I will be selling these through so please make enquiries via Gertrude app or online.

Since it’s a lower viewpoint there is no sky and not much in the way of patches of sunshine. But I liked the challenge of that weird dusty surface of blueberries and the combination of purple, blue, and green in them.

The title, I chose just because it’s a bush. For years in East London there were small signs with this phrase and a phone number, advertising by gardeners. It became a humorous catchphrase in my house.

“I paint to reveal some of what can’t be spoken, that words alone can’t touch or that there are no words for; here language is colour, shapes, pattern, shadow, light and mark. Abstracted mind maps that conjure and capture contrasting, contradictory and layered thoughts and emotions; conversations with self that reach into something unknown.”

Can be purchased through the .art scheme in instalments over 10 months. please contact for more details of the scheme.

Posted • The Parc. Work in Progress. Not quite finished yet- it’ll have to wait til we get back from Marseille. I wanted to make a quiet conversation piece, just an ordinary everyday post- supper scene with my man and his parents in their former apartment in Singapore. I am thinking about how painters like Manet and Degas suggest such passages of daily life, and how, for me, to get the particular individuality of each of the three protagonists not by illustration, but through body language, while keeping the representations all specific to them. That’s the tightrope. And I wanted to paint things - the familiar clutter of that household that I love so much, the books and papers and objects piles high, and the ink brush painting bought on a trip to China. Distant voices, still lives.

Posted • First day in the studio for a little while, finishing this one off.

I’ve been developing my What3words idea while I’ve been away, exploring language alongside painting, I am interested in the idea that we have a propensity to read random words and try and make sense of them, make a sentence of them, in the same way that people see an intrinsically abstract painting and try to visually rationalise it as something recognisable.

So this painting is from a photo I took at location palace.echo.plan, here are some ideas for the text that I’ve created from the what3words and then some text I’ve asked ChatGPT to create. Who would you say wins the war of the words? I’m thinking takes it, hands down.

This idea will either go somewhere or I’ll get to thinking it’s all a bit un-me….or it’s got nothing whatsoever to do with the painting. It’s properly an idea-in-progress/work in progress, your thoughts appreciated.

Open daily 12-4pm.
at Lea Bridge Library, London E10 7HU

The Exhibition:
COMPOST is a rich and heady mix of work by 18 contemporary artists engaged in the mucky business of painting. A fertile compound of creative organisms bringing together scraps of ideas, wasted thoughts and recycled dreams. In times of environmental crisis when humanity itself seems to be a decaying organic substance, we take a poke around in the undergrowth. We dig into themes around death, decay, plants, regeneration and new growth, hoping that in time new and surprising forms will emerge from the darkness.

Posted • It’s been a while since I’ve written on here.
We’ve been away in Erin our old but new to us Eriba Caravan which was an incredibly steep learning curve but so much fun.
Eriba reel to follow.....
Today is the first day I’ve got to my studio after open studios and .
I have a small collection of drawings and concertina pages that I’m pleased with and am holding in balance 2 projects that need to be finished in the coming weeks before my solo retreat in the goat hut 🛖.
The earworm that is the song title I’ve been given for the next phase of submission and images in mind are emerging as responses.
I’m also back to swimming early mornings and making blue swimmy drawings to inform some big paintings 💙
For me making paintings feels like bringing into being images from the corner of my mind, inchoate yet fondly familiar - like growing to love one’s own face over time.
Today on my way to the station to go to this evenings talk I saw a woman carrying a tiny cardigan in the synthetic pink I recall from the clothes knitted for my baby doll, then I saw a young girl wearing a raincoat and it made me smile.
Gently turning one’s insides out in the practice of painting can be both cathartic and soothing - the process can’t be rushed - it takes silence, reverie and reflection.
I’ve made six starts on small paintings for my own studio self selection committee - I’m using Flashe paint because they’ll need to dry sooner than my usual paintings.
Here’s a start anyway 🥰
