KLENDATHU

Poster for Starship Troopers at the Engine House, for our studio’s Halloween movie night.

A3 risograph poster printed in black, orange and yellow inks.
Each letter when animated together creates a 9 frame animation of the Arachnids stampeding.

Paul Verhoven’s sci-fi blockbuster is a thinly veiled satire of American jingoism, performed as a coming of age movie. A highly militarised, violently right wing and colonialist society engages in war with an enemy they have no desire to empathise with or make attempts to coexist with. Released in 1997, many themes of this movie are prescient today.

This is the now the main site for just the pattern work
(with other projects to follow with their own site later!)

Site design takes inspiration from risograph print to match how the patterns are printed. All assets have been riso printed including the animations. For laptop and desktop viewers, zooming out in the browser shows more of the repeated patterns.

Will be updating a few more patterns to this over the next couple of months, happy to have made a more sympathetic home for them!

A second study of tower cranes, this pattern focused more on the cranes than the skyscrapers. Inspired by the increasingly dense clusters of cranes that are continuing to appear around a ceaselessly developing Manchester.

Furniture experiments

Images 1 and 2 - Birch ply table and benches
Images 3 and 4 - Oak batten and birch ply shelves

Over the last 12 months I’ve been designing and building furniture for the house, learning some techniques and just testing out what works. Here’s a couple of pieces that are ready now, the table and bench set and the alcove bookshelves. Very much enjoying the process of figuring all this out, having ideas and seeing them come to life.

A lot more shelves and furniture to build which I’m looking forward to getting on with!

Several years ago whilst visiting Italy, I came across Jesolo Beach’s regular and vast formation of parasols. It was out of season, an empty factory ready for beach lounging on an industrial scale. I took a photo and spent years thinking how to process this scene.

Sustainability and Time: Earth’s Journey

A timeline based on a concept from Dr Joanne Tippett (RoundView) which condenses the Earth's history (just over 4 ½ billion years) into one calendar year. The A1 print is to be used in schools to help students see the carbon impact of human activity on the planet i.e we’ve only been around in the last 2 minutes of this year and the Industrial Revolution was less than 2 seconds ago!

Been several months in the making (or about 0.01 seconds on the timeline scale) with research for each illustration, designing a clean layout for the calendar and refining/editing all the details so very happy to be able to share the results of all this work 🗓️

Design for Unintended Consequences: Gathering Downstream exhibition by Jen Southern at Quarry Bank Mill. Produced by FutureEverything

Direction inspired by Jen’s work focusing on machine-learning created images of weaved fabric and her love of the concept of living type in Jeff Vandermeer’s book Annihilation.

Section titles map to the surrounding area of Quarry Bank Mill, with letter composition inspired by the movement of these surrounds.

Exhibition runs until November.

Sustainability: All signage is paper based using painted wooden battens to mount; reducing the use of plastic and vinyl to keep in line with Quarry Bank’s ecological aims.
