🎉 Huge congratulations to Felicia Kwaku, Associate Director of Nursing at King's, on being awarded the Gold by Dame Ruth May, outgoing Chief Nursing Officer for England.
Felicia attended Parliament on 24 July to celebrate the completion of her tenure as Chair of the Chief Nursing Officer & Chief Midwifery Officer’s Black Minority Ethnic Strategic Advisory Group at NHS England. During the event, Dame Ruth presented Felicia with a Gold award, the highest honour from a Chief Nursing Officer.
A Gold award is presented for outstanding achievement and performance by a nurse or midwife in their sphere of practice. This may be clinical practice, education, research, or leadership.
Reflecting on the award, Felicia said:
"I was completely shocked and not expecting the award. It has been a privilege to be Chair of the advisory group, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have achieved so much. We as a group provide several functions including expert advice to the Chief Nursing Officer and others on matters of race equality, policy and practice, as well as supporting the Black and minority ethnic nursing and midwifery workforce."
"I am so proud to be a nurse."

🌟 Meet Kylie Nadon, our Career Schemes Coordinator at King's College Hospital, and a finalist for the Rising Star Award at the 2024!
Here’s what Kylie had to say about her work and nomination:
🔹 Can you tell us a bit more about the initiative?
"The purpose of King’s Work Experience programme is to provide our local secondary school students from all backgrounds with equitable access to shadowing placements and mentorship from professionals in careers of interest to them. After placements, students are better equipped to confidently and successfully approach further education, apprenticeships or direct entry to the workforce."
🔹 What do you consider your most significant achievement in your role so far, and how has it impacted the students and the Trust?
"My most significant achievement has been going through NHS England’s Work Experience Quality Standards Accreditation. It was a huge project and ultimately, I drew a lot of inspiration from the framework to better enhance the students’ and mentors’ experiences through workbooks, conversation guides, reflection activities and more. Having a focus on quality while experiencing the exponential growth of students on placement is key."
🔹 How do you feel about being nominated for the Rising Star Award, and what does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?
"I am very grateful. Professionally, this nomination will hopefully further promote the programme internally to attract colleagues who share my desire to inspire and support our local young people in achieving their healthcare career ambitions. Personally, it is heart-warming having this opportunity to reflect on the successes of the bright young people and passionate mentors involved."

Patsy began her journey in the maternity service at Dulwich Community Hospital in 1982 before moving to King’s. Reflecting on her years with the NHS, she shared:
“So much has changed over the years since I first started caring for mothers and families in the local community. I must have cared for hundreds of people and some of them I will never forget.
“Once you become part of Team King’s, you are part of the team forever. Angela Helleur was my student when I was a Sister based at Dulwich, and we then worked together at King’s. She gave me the push to do my degree, and we ended up studying together. She is now running things at the PRUH and I am so proud of her. I love hearing about how my former colleagues at King’s have grown, developed and thrived.”
