🙏🙏🙏
Huge thanks from AFFORD UK for your interest, support and participation in the Diaspora Engagement Forum (DEF) and African Diaspora & Development Day (AD3) 2024 on Saturday 6th July.

AFFORD's annual flagship event AD3 was held in London in partnership with the African Union Commission's African Institute for Remittances (AIR) initiative and alongside the 5th DEF.

This was an excellent partnership and one we were proud to engage in, bringing together two formidable platforms – DEF and AD3.

Discussions were productive and rewarding. The content and expert input was rich and varied with much to ponder on.

We welcomed three African government officials: Ambassador Edwin Afande, Ag. High Commissioner, Kenya High Commission - London; R. Yofi Grant, CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre; and Hon. Terab Abdulrahman of (Nigerians in Diaspora Commission).

Our speakers included: Lewis Goode, CEO and founder of AfriVest.; Joe K., founder of Pltfm; Amadou Cisse, interim executive director of the African Institute for Remittances; Prof. Gibril Faal OBE, JP, director of GK Partners and LSE Visiting Professor in Practice; Elvina Quaison, diaspora engagement specialist; Afzaal Mauthoor, multipreneur and expert in digital transformation and emerging technologies in emerging economies; Na Ncube FRSA, founder and farmer at Is'phala Produce; Githiora Thuku, investor at Baobab Network; Unisa Dizo-Conteh, PhD researcher and former global president of Young Leaders of Sierra Leone; Roopal Kanabar, impact investment consultant; Joseph Elvis A. Lamptey, director of growth at PayAngel; Dilys Kyeiwaa Winterkorn, project director at the Pathway Fund; Giorgia Prati, migration and climate change lead at FAO; MOSES WASSWA MULIMIRA, NHS global health manager; Agnes Gitau, executive director of the Eastern Africa Association, Nicolai Eddy, COO of African fintech company NALA; Dr Eva Khair, global health policy advisor and humanitarian health consultant; and AFFORD chair Ndidi Njoku.

AFFORD's 30-year journey would not have been possible without the hundreds of diaspora and friends who have supported us with their generosity and invaluable time.

AD3 was an opportunity to mobilise new supporters, collaborators and sponsors, and raise funds to consolidate our ongoing work.

If you would like to support AFFORD's work with a donation we would be hugely grateful. Please scan the QR code below.

For the 2024 - 2025 period, the Government of Colombia has taken on the chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). Civil society warmly welcomes their leadership in the international space, and appreciates their willingness to establish a close partnership with the GFMD Civil Society Mechanism (CSM) and thus global civil society actors as a whole.

With the 2024-2025 GFMD programme due to be launched in September, the CSM is hosting a series of regional consultations throughout July for civil society to provide feedback on the proposed thematic priorities and plans. This will serve as the first step into a collaborative partnership with stakeholders, ensuring civil society inclusion and meaningful participation from the start and throughout the GFMD process.

‘A colonial mindset’: why global aid agencies need to get out of the way Before civil war engulfed her Ethiopian home region of Tigray in 2020, Tsega Girma was a prosperous trader who sold stationery and other goods. But when hungry children displaced by the conflict started appearing in the streets, she sold everything and used the proceeds to buy them food. After that....

On 26 March 2024 AFFORD and Enabel organised a policy event to discuss and present AFFORD Europe’s experience in the PEM WECCO project.

The PEM (Projet de Mobilité des Entrepreneurs) WECCO project ("WECCO" means "exchange" in Wolof) was set up with the overall aim of contributing to the development of the local economy and contributing to the dialogue on migration governance between Senegal and Belgium.

AFFORD and its partners are working to mainstream labour mobility and facilitate it for Africans wanting to do business in Europe. We have been, we are, and we will continue to be active in the sector, with a strong focus on adapting the current policies to reflect reality.
