that Fabienne Verdier left for China at the age of twenty to study under the great masters of traditional painting and stayed there for ten years?

Verdier revolutionized her art by abandoning easel painting and creating a unique vertical painting technique where gravity plays a central role. In 2006, she even designed monumental brushes that extend her body, allowing her to paint her works directly on the floor.

‘I like the idea of a word becoming a picture, almost leaving its body, then coming back and becoming a word again,’ Ed Ruscha once said. ‘I see myself working with two things that don’t even ask to understand each other.’  His earlier paintings have been described as ‘not pictures of words but words treated as visual constructs’.

A special visit from Pedro Almodóvar at Opera Gallery Madrid!

“Since I began my life as a photographer, I have always tried to imitate paintings, not photography, without resorting to any special technique except waiting for the light that comes through the windows. My only task has been to wait for the exact moment, which varies depending on the season and at times, it’s a matter of a very few minutes.” -Pedro Almodóvar

Manolo Valdés comments on the juxtaposition between the static faces of his sculptures and their dynamic headdresses, stating, “I must admit that I adore the pronounced tension that is established between the two parts; it’s as if they were two entirely different sculptures. The challenge is having them function as a harmonious whole, as well as allowing their initial different formulation to be seen not as something separate but as something enriching.”

that Georges Mathieu was one of the pioneers of ‘performance painting’?

From the 1950s, Mathieu would create large-scale abstract works in front of live audiences, turning the act of painting into a theatrical event. His rapid, dynamic brushstrokes and the dramatic flair with which he approached his canvases made these performances as much a spectacle as the finished artworks themselves. This innovative approach helped bridge the gap between visual art and performance art, influencing future generations of artists.

Yayoi Kusama’s fascination with pumpkins began in her childhood in pre-war Japan when her family owned a plant nursery specializing in kabocha squash (Japanese pumpkin). Her early drawings of pumpkins evolved into a lifelong obsession.  Reflecting on her attraction to them, she once expressed, “I was enchanted by their charming and winsome form. What appealed to me most was the pumpkin’s generous unpretentiousness.”
