“Looking after any birthing person in pregnancy is a privilege but to look after a bereaved family, to me, is the pinnacle of midwifery. We support these patients and their families to walk out of our hospitals without a baby. To be part of this difficult journey and to witness such strength and tenacity is humbling.”

James [pictured centre] worked as a night porter at St Mary’s Hospital throughout the summer of 1976. His mother recently received care at St Mary’s, and this prompted him to reflect on his own experiences 💙
“As a night porter, I was in charge of the crash trolley and had to be ready to drop everything when the bell rang and rush it to wherever a patient’s heart had stopped beating. I was instructed that if drinking tea, I was to throw it to the ground rather than put it down, as even a fraction of a second could be the difference between life and death!
“Back at St Mary’s more than four decades later, a lot has changed. Before, there was a near absence of visible technology. Screens, gizmos, beeps and bells were very few and far between outside of intensive care. The diversity of today’s NHS workforce is a further major and welcome shift. There were some wonderful nurses from the Caribbean during my time, but just a handful. Today’s NHS is a visibly global enterprise, with colleagues from every continent.
“Now, talk of cuts, waiting lists and shortages make the headlines. The evident constant though, can only be called the spirit of the NHS. By that, I mean the shared endeavour of tending to the sick with humanity and care, muddling on through despite adversity; the team spirit when things go wrong, or are just heavy going; and the cheerfulness and courtesy of staff.”

“We’re working with people at their lowest. It’s the scariest, most painful point in their lives.
"One of the most rewarding parts of the role is seeing patients really rise to the challenge and get themselves back on their feet, despite such life altering and sudden injuries. It could be traumatic amputees taking on their rehab with a smile as they can’t wait to get back to football or one of our really significant polytrauma patients just being enthused to get out of bed – they’re determined to crack on. There are so many inspiring stories."

Stacey Bryan is a consultant gynaecologist specialising in gynaecology oncology at Hammersmith Hospital. Last month she was awarded ‘Oncology Clinician/Specialist of the Year’ at the Caribbean & African Health Network - CAHN Black Healthcare Awards.
The awards celebrate healthcare professionals of Black African or Caribbean origin who have shown themselves to be outstanding in their practice and have a determination to make a difference. They are the first to focus solely on Black healthcare professionals of the Caribbean or African diaspora.
Stacey shared, “I didn’t expect to win this award as I was up against two incredible candidates who are well established in their field. It was very nice to be recognised for my work not only in my day-to-day job, but as Vice Chair of the British Caribbean Doctors & Dentists' Association-BCDD, where our aim is to improve health literacy and empower members of the African and Caribbean community in order to improve health outcomes.
"By winning this award I hope that it will open doors for more collaborative working with other organisations to make a difference.”
Well done Stacey 💙

“My journey in the NHS began at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in November 2022, and it has been an incredible journey filled with growth and learning.
“Coming from Bangladesh, I didn't have exposure to many of the practices and protocols common in the NHS. The Trust has provided me with the perfect environment to expand my knowledge and skills, experience different specialties and become a better doctor. I have been inspired by the dedication, expertise and passion of everyone I have had the privilege to work with, from consultants to registrars, nurses to therapists, pharmacists to healthcare support workers. I want to thank everyone for their kindness and patience.
“I am excited to be entering into my first year of internal medicine training at Imperial College Healthcare – the place where I have been encouraged and supported to find my feet in the UK healthcare system.”
Faisal has just completed his F3 training with us – an option for junior doctors who do not wish to start another formal training programme after completing their foundation programme. All the best with your next steps Faisal 💙

Callan was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. He is a patient at our oncology outpatients clinic at Hammersmith Hospital where we are trialling new treatments for cancer ➡️ https://intranet.imperial.nhs.uk/public/page/new-cancer-cures
We are recruiting patients from across the UK and all over the world to help drive forward this work. Callan was the very first patent in the UK to receive a new treatment as part of a clinical trial at the clinic. He said he feels “proud” to have played a part in enabling the discovery of cutting-edge cancer treatments that could save lives 💙
Julie has worked at our Trust in different audiology roles for over 40 years, including as head of audiology services since 1990. Julie is now preparing to retire as head of audiology services. She shared, “From a young age I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. Although audiology is a science-based role, it is very much patient oriented, and this is what I have found most rewarding.
“Technology has changed immensely throughout my career. Previously, the tone and output of certain hearing aids could only be adjusted using a screwdriver, whereas now we can adjust the different frequency channels to suit the patient from our computer and hearing tests can be carried out directly through the device!
“Hearing is a sense that so many of us take for granted and if we lose it – to whatever degree – it can have an impact on our quality of life. To restore some of that quality of life back to patients is beyond satisfying. It has been a joy to work alongside so many passionate and expert colleagues who put patients at the heart of everything they do.”
We are thrilled that Julie [pictured middle] will still be running a specialist audiology clinic one day a week at the Trust 💙

At our newly opened oncology outpatients clinic at Hammersmith Hospital, clinicians and patients are coming together to find new treatments for cancer ➡️ https://intranet.imperial.nhs.uk/public/page/new-cancer-cures
Patients are being recruited from across the UK and all over the world to receive cutting-edge treatments. Among the most exciting new therapies being trialled are some of the mRNA-based drugs that may have the potential to treat a variety of cancers by preventing them from spreading through the body.
Dr David Pinato, oncology consultant and director of developmental therapeutics at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “The idea with this kind of technology is to inject patients with a series of precise and often personalised instructions in the form of mRNA that might facilitate the immune system’s ability to recognise and clear the cancer better.
“This approach is very innovative because it will enable the patients’ own body to do the work and block the cancer directly.”

Dr Vanesa Garnelo Rey has worked within intensive care for 15 years and was the consultant on call when we opened our Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at St Mary’s in 2010 – the very centre featured in Channel 4's Emergency this week!
She told us, “Trauma is one of my main interests, so St Mary’s felt like the right fit for me. No two days are the same – intensive care is full of unpredictability but the honour of helping people through their most difficult time is what made me choose this specialty.
“I had the privilege of being the Trust’s very first senior clinical fellow in 2009 and spent my first year helping prepare for the opening of our MTC, which included developing the traumatic brain injury and sedation guidelines.
“My colleagues have been so supportive, particularly during my transition from senior fellow to junior consultant. We have a diverse team of international colleagues who bring a vast wealth of knowledge. It has been a joy to work alongside them, to watch trainees become consultants, and to spark a genuine interest in intensive care in my peers.
“Outside of the Trust, my passion for flying sees me instruct aircrew on health hazards at the Centre of Aerospace Medicine at RAF Henlow. Aviation and medicine have a great deal in common and it is a privilege to do both!”

📣 A European first! On Monday, Orthopaedic surgeons at St Mary’s Hospital became the first in Europe to successfully implant a new and innovative plate to fix a fracture inside a patient’s pelvis.
The procedure took approximately four hours to complete and involved surgeons entering through the patient’s lower abdomen, reducing the fracture and then fixing with the Stryker Trauma Pelvic Suprapectineal Flex Plate – which was only released in Europe last week.
Chris Jordan, consultant orthopaedic & trauma surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust shared, “We are always looking to use the newest implants and equipment within orthopaedics. This new plate fits the pelvis even better than previous versions. Stryker used their SOMA technology to design the plate utilising nearly 20,000 CT scans to optimise the design and fit.
Well done to everyone involved 👏🏽

“Surgeons are craftspeople, and we are meticulous about our craft – I call myself a ‘rational perfectionist.’ I always tell surgeons in training to aim for perfection. If you aspire for perfection, you will end up with the best possible result. If you don’t, you can quickly settle to a mediocre level, and that’s just not good enough for our patients.”
Professor Raj Bhattacharya joined the Major Trauma Centre at St Mary’s Hospital when it was first established in 2010 – today, he’s our divisional director for surgery and cancer.
