Colin Barnes / is a multi-disciplinary artist based in South London. We’ve recently released his artworks ‘Visible / Invisible Orange’ and ‘Visible / Invisible Blue’ on the Jealous website - both works are prints made from his original large scale paintings.
Barnes described the theme behind these works for us:
“I remember watching Tom and Jerry cartoons as a kid which I loved but when this character appeared on screen, to me I felt something was off, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I didn’t understand why I could only see part of the person, especially seeing as she had a voice that we could always hear, so I felt she was present but also just out of sight. So my initial intention was to answer the question I had when I was younger which was “where is the rest of that person?” So I first painted just the figure with a negative space above the body, and I added the outline further on as an afterthought.
I left the outline of head blank as way of adding some mystery to the piece, I feel it gives the viewer space to bring their own meaning and experience to the image. So in the end we have a figure based on a cartoon and the outline of the head based on a photo of the actress Lillian Randolph (who voiced the character), which when combined creates a piece that is familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.”
These prints are priced at £295 each, click on each image to see the full details on our website.
