HAPPY NEW YEAR, Everyone. Thank you for being here with us as we celebrate the creative works of Dirk Bogarde. With much love to each and every one of you.

A very Happy Holidays to all followers who keep alive the memory of Dirk Bogarde's creative talents. We love you all for being with us.

THE NIGHT PORTER: Director Liliana Cavani was awarded Venice's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, presented by Bogarde's co-star in the film, Charlotte Rampling, Venice Film Festival, 2023.

The Guardian newspaper today opened its photographs from readers with a stunning photo of the Seven Sisters cliffs, East Sussex: Dirk's old hunting ground. There is a memorable sketch he did of the cliffs among his drawings.

And to our American members, a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING and our thanks to each and every one of our members for being with us to celebrate Dirk's creative memory. With our love and thanks.

Director Joseph Losey’s claustrophobic 1964 study of the WW I infantryman, Private Arthur Hamp, (Tom Courtenay) targeted for court-martial and sentenced to death for walking away from battle. Why such a harsh sentence? To deter other soldiers from 'deserting'.

"Bogarde gives a superb performance as Captain Hargreaves, the austere army lawyer assigned to defending Hamp ,who is actually suffering from shell shock, not willful desertion, but who must pay the price for blunders of command.

"Shot in 18 days or less on a bare budget, the film caught the despair and raw filth the troops lived and fought in.

'King and Country' remained a lifelong source of pride for Bogarde."

The Garden Cinema writes, one of our members nominated "The Servant, with this praise, "I believe this is one of the best British films ever made, and it’s important that we remember and celebrate it." Bravo, we agree!

"The Servant" (1963) is indeed a superb screenplay adapted by Pinter from the novel by Robin Maugham. Dirk won one of his two BAFTAs for his role as the malevolent Hugo Barrett.

KING & COUNTRY, StudioCanal: 4K Restoration coming 6th November, 2023, in Blu-ray, reg. B, and DVD, reg. 2 PAL.

Dirk as Captain Hargreaves, a tough army lawyer is assigned to defend army volunteer Private Hamp, played by Tom Courtenay. Shell shocked, Hamp deserts, is caught, and faces a court martial. Leo McKern and Barry Foster also star in this taut drama.

"KING AND COUNTRY" set during WWI, is an emotionally powerful film that explores the effects of war and shell
shock on the human psyche. Based on the John Wilson play "Hamp," from the 1955 novel "Return To The Wood" by James Lansdale Hodson.

The film is one of four of Dirk's collaborations with director Joseph Losey: 1he 1954 thriller THE SLEEPING TIGER, THE SERVANT (1963) which Dirk won his first of two BAFTAS for, and ACCIDENT (1967), all available from the Vintage Classics collection.

"The Times" praised Dirk who "as a representative of the new type of criminal, the reckless youth with a kink in his mind, gives an admirable performance."

DADDY NOSTALGIE/ DADDY NOSTALGIA
For the many who have asked how to see this film: we don't find it streaming anywhere with English subtitles, but there are three DVDs available at Ebay and other venues: We have all of them and in our opinion they are all good viewing:
The Studio Canal DVD and the Karma DVD are both region 2. The Koch Lorber DVD is a reg. one for US and Canadian members.

Dirk loved working with director Bertrand Tavernier, who asked him to write the scene on "physical pain" as he sat in the car with daughter (Jane Birkin) talking in front of the garage gas station. And Dirk did write it.

It wasn't the first time that Dirk wrote scenes in his movies and revised many scenes in them to the irritation of the screenwriters, but they were always better after Dirk took a pen to them. 👏💕

The beautiful, talented JANE BIRKIN died the 16th of July. Her unforgettable presence and her acting and singing will be missed.

When Dirk and Jane Birkin starred in "Daddy Nostalgie," Dirk "established an unbreakable bond with Birkin who too had left Britain in the sixties....she knew just as well the pangs of the outsider."

"During the filming, Jane was vulnerable, she was stricken with nerves. Dirk took her under his wing." When Birkin's parents came out to stay on location....Dirk was a 'love' with her father David Birkin and mother Judy Campbell..." (Coldstream bio., 509-510). Birkin never forgot Dirk's kindness to her.

R.I.P. Glenda Jackson has died at 87. She starred with Dirk in "The Patricia Neal Story, aka Act of Love" in 1981. As Roald Dahl, Neal's husband, Dirk portrayed Dahl's battle to help his wife walk again after several strokes, a miracle so successful Neal not only walked but resumed acting and lived an active life.

Dirk adored Jackson. "We were a good team." At their first meeting, Glenda Jackson recalled, "It was a kind of love at first sight."

The screen star and former Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate won the Oscar for best actress in 1970 for "Women In Love" and again three years later for "A Touch Of Class."

Ms Jackson died after a brief illness at her home in Blackheath, south-east London, her agent said. R.I.P. She will be sorely missed.
