The relaunched Edinburgh International Film Festival begins today, featuring UK Premieres for two new films from Norway 📽️🇳🇴
Launched in the 'un certain regard' section at Cannes this year, Armand is the debut feature film from director Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel and stars Renate Reinsve. The film is screening from Monday.
On one of the last days before the school holidays something happens between the boy and schoolmate Jon. The parents are called in for a meeting, but the school management doesn't really know what actually happened. Was it just a children’s game or something much more serious? The incident between the two boys triggers a series of events, forcing parents and school staff into a captivating battle - where madness, desire and obsession arise.
Also on the lineup is documentary A new kind of wilderness - Ukjent landskap from Silje Evensmo Jacobsen. Winner of the World Cinema – Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, the film is screening from tomorrow.
On a small farm in the Norwegian forest, the Payne family seeks a wild and free existence. They practice home-schooling and strive for a closely-knit family dynamic in harmony with nature. However, when tragedy unexpectedly strikes the family, it upends their idyllic world and forces them to forge a new path into modern society. A New Kind of Wilderness is an intimate story that delves into our life choices, our responsibility to the planet, our children, and how we navigate life after a significant loss.

Performing on traditional instruments and drawing on the rich musical heritage of Norway’s regions, Norwegian folk musicians are blending the traditional with the contemporary each in their own way. This coming Sunday afternoon, Cambridge Folk Festival has a special Norway focus showcasing four brilliant exponents of Norwegian folk music on stage 3, in association with Music Norway & FolkOrg - organisasjon for folkemusikk og folkedans:
Trio Ævestaden create a unique soundscape when timeless harmonies, and layers of simple motifs, create an open and atmospheric world, using varying instrument combinations, with lyres, fiddle, kantele, vocals, mouth harp and electronics.
Spelemannen Alexander Aga Røynstrand has distinguished himself as a leading figure in the world of Hardanger fiddle players in Norway. He’s earned the well-deserved title of ‘Master Fiddle Player’, marking his exceptional skills and contributions to this traditional art form.
With Hardanger fiddle, el-guitar and double bass, Erlend Viken Trio presents a rare sound based on traditional music, inspired by improvisation, desert blues and rock. Known for their energetic live shows, the trio has played concerts all over Europe.
Violinist Julie Alapnes is a well-known north Norwegian musician and composer who blends traditional Norwegian folk tunes with elements from a diverse musical universe into a unique, artistic expression of storytelling.

Happy Pride! The Pride flag has been flying at 25 Belgrave Square all this week, and tomorrow we will be marching in Pride in London together with the other Nordic missions as part of 🌈
Oslo Pride also takes place on the same day, marking 50 years since the city's first Pride march. Norway supports human rights for all both at home and internationally, and is part of the struggle against stigma, discrimination and violence against the LGBTI+ community.
As Minister for Culture and Equality Lubna Jaffery said in her speech earlier this week, “The Government is working to ensure that everyone throughout the country can live safe, free lives and that society at large stands up for LGBTI+ people…We continue to fight. For freedom, equality and love”
For the first time in its 136-year history, Nordic Music Days is coming to Scotland this year 🏴
From 30 October to 3 November, UNESCO City of Music Glasgow will host the festival, presenting concerts, sound installations, talks, and screenings from artists across the Nordic countries and Scotland. The festival will explore the theme ‘Word of Mouth’, evoking the movement and spread of ideas and traditions.
This week we were at Scotland House for the London launch of the festival, with music performed by Andy Saunders and Louise McMonagle. Deputy Ambassador Øyvind Hernes gave a speech on behalf of the Nordic Embassies who were present, and we heard from Katrine Feldinger, Martin Jonsson Tiblin, Alistair Mackie, and Gillian Moore. We look forward to the many developing musical connections between the Nordics and Scotland during this year’s Nordic Music Days and over the years to come!
Nordic Music Days is one of the longest running festivals for contemporary classical music and is unique in that it is curated by composers. The 2024 edition is only the third time that the festival has been held outside of the Nordics. In 2012 the festival was held in Berlin and London in 2017, when it took place at the Southbank Centre.

Renowned for their refined sound and innovative concert presentations, under the leadership of artistic director Pekka Kuusisto, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra Det Norske Kammerorkester continues to push the boundaries of performance. With a strong commitment to renewing the classical concert format, the NCO's recent projects include Grieg’s Holberg Suite with choreography and Strauss’ Metamorphosen performed by heart.
On Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 June, the NCO and Pekka Kuusisto are giving the London premiere of 'DSCH' in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank Centre. Working with a team of collaborators from the worlds of stage direction, lighting design, set design, costume, and musical arrangement, DSCH is a truly unique concert-theatre experience. Blurring the lines between these different forms, DSCH gives us glimpses into the life and music of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Dmitri Shostakovich.

In 'Life is Beautiful', director Mohamed Jabaly tells the story of how he fought for his rights as a Palestinian filmmaker stranded in Norway in 2014 due to circumstances beyond his control. Through his personal archive and video calls, he shares his love and longing for his home, friends and family, as he tries to make a new life for himself in the arctic. The film is a love letter to Gaza, to his adopted hometown in Tromsø, and to the empowering force of storytelling.
Life is Beautiful has its UK premiere this Friday at Sheffield DocFest , and will be shown in London as part of SAFAR Film Festival with a Q&A with Jabaly at Ciné Lumière at the INSTITUT FRANÇAIS on Tuesday 18 June and at the ICA on Saturday 22nd. Ambassador Tore Hattrem and colleagues from the Embassy were honoured to participate in yesterday’s D-Day 80 Commemoration in Portsmouth. We pay tribute to the brave soldiers’ courage and sacrifice.
Joining with forces from the UK, US, Canada and other Allied nations, Norwegian forces involved in Operation Overlord included two squadrons of fighter aircraft, 10 marine vessels and 43 ships from the merchant fleet. Norwegian meteorologist Sverre Petterssen was part of the team behind the ‘most important weather forecast in history’, which helped determine the date of 6 June for the invasion.
In the words of HM King Charles: "It is our duty to ensure that we, and future generations, do not forget their service and their sacrifice in replacing tyranny with freedom. Our rights, and the liberty won at such terrible cost, bring with them responsibilities to others in the exercise of that liberty".
Of all those who fought, and all those who died the King added: "We are all, eternally, in their debt".
Today His Royal Highness The Crown Prince is attending events commemorating 80 years since the invasion at Hermanville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach.

Over 1200 years after the raid on Lindisfarne, much is still being discovered about the relationships between Norway and the British Isles during the Viking Age.
As part of a special event at the Ambassador’s Residence yesterday, Cat Jarman, author of River Kings: A New History of the Vikings from Scandinavia to the Silk Road, was joined by four other UK-based researchers specializing in Viking history. Together they explained how new research is changing how we understand the period, from what analysis of ancient DNA and materials can tell us about the Vikings’ migration, trading and raiding, to how Norse place names on Orkney can shed light on its Nordic connections.
Our congratulations to Dr Jarman who was presented with CoScan’s ‘Nordic Personality of the Year’ award by President Nick Archer, and thanks to all who joined us at the event hosted by H.E. Ambassador Tore Hattrem in cooperation with CoScan / Confederation of Scandinavian Societies & Norwegian-British Chamber of Commerce
‘The Norwegian Government has decided that Norway will recognise Palestine as a state. In the midst of a war, with tens of thousands killed and injured, we must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike: Two states, living side by side, in peace and security,’ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Norway’s long-term engagement has supported and sought to advance the two-state solution. Recognition of Palestine as a state further highlights the long-held Norwegian position that a lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East is only achieved through a two-state solution.
The Palestinian people have a fundamental, independent right to self-determination. Both Israelis and Palestinians have a right to live in peace in their respective states. There will be no peace in the Middle East without a two-state solution. There can be no two-state solution without a Palestinian state. In other words, a Palestinian state is a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East,’ said Prime Minister Støre.

What are your favourite traditions? Norwegians usually mark this time of year by soaking up the first rays of the spring sun, and heading to the mountains for the last big chance to get some serious skiing in ⛷️. All preferably accompanied by citrus and/or chocolate snacks and a thermos full of their hot beverage of choice.
And of course - no Norwegian Easter is complete without a crime novel or two. Check out NORLA for some recommendations of

On Wednesday, the Embassy in partnership with King's College London and Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) hosted an exclusive presentation and discussion event centred around "The Twin Transition Century: The role of digital research for a successful green transition of society?"
This insightful paper, authored by Morten Dæhlen and colleagues, was produced in collaboration with The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, a distinguished network of research-focused institutions across Europe.
The paper emerged from extensive discussions within the Guild, exploring the intricate relationship between digital and green transitions. It underscores their interdependence and the complex challenges they pose.
Our heartfelt appreciation to Professor Morten Dæhlen of the University of Oslo and Professor Marion Thain of King's College London for their engaging presentation of the paper and for the subsequent discussion.
The event drew attendance from both British and Norwegian research communities, along with representatives from other Embassies and leading Norwegian and British firms operating in the field, and was followed by a networking reception.
