An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple test that can be used to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity.

Sensors attached to the skin are used to detect the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats.

These signals are recorded by a machine and are looked at by a doctor to see if they're unusual. Need an ECG? Get in touch with us today!

Fatty material called atheroma (or plaque) builds up in the lining of your artery walls and narrows your arteries. Over time this can build up until your arteries become so narrow they can’t let enough blood through, leading to a heart attack. That’s called atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is common. It’s more common in people over 65 and those with a family history of heart or circulatory diseases.

A CT Calcium Score scan can help doctors detect if your arteries are blocked and also the level of blockage. Do you have any questions about atherosclerosis? Tell us in the comments.

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the structures within and around the heart. This test is performed to help doctors detect or monitor cardiac disease by evaluating the anatomy and function of the heart chambers, heart valves, size of and blood flow through major vessels. Research shows that in the UK:
✅if you're South Asian, you're more likely to develop coronary heart disease than white Europeans.
✅if you're African or African Caribbean, you're at higher risk of developing high blood pressure and having a stroke than other ethnic groups.
✅Africans, African Caribbeans and South Asians are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than the rest of the population.

There isn't a clear answer to why you may be at increased risk. Genetics likely play a part, but lifestyle choices can also affect your risk. Look after your heart health by having regular check-ups!

24/08/2021

Stress alone won’t cause a heart and circulatory disease. But it is linked to unhealthy habits that can increase your risk. You may be more likely to turn to unhealthy habits such as smoking, eating comfort food that’s typically high in fat or sugar, drinking too much alcohol or not being physically active. In the moment, these things can temporarily reduce your stress. But if you do too much of them in the long run, it can damage your heart health.

Don’t forget to get your heart checked regularly for any sign of disease!

12/08/2021

A healthy lifestyle will make your heart healthier. Here are some things you can do to look after your heart:

- Give up smoking
- Get active
- Manage your weight
- Eat more fibre
- Cut down on saturated fat
- Get your 5 fruit and veg a day
- Cut down on salt
- Eat fish
- Drink less alcohol

Don’t forget: having regular cardiac check-ups are also important for maintaining a healthy heart!

There’s much talk in the news about Myocarditis as of late but do you know what it is? Myocarditis is a disease that causes inflammation of the heart muscle. This inflammation enlarges and weakens the heart, creates scar tissue and forces it to work harder to circulate blood and oxygen throughout the body. One of the causes of myocarditis are viral infections, such as covid-19. If you’ve had Covid or have been vaccinated, it could worth it getting yourself checked out. Contact us today for more information, links in the bio.

Being overweight can lead to fatty material building up in your arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood to your organs). If the arteries that carry blood to your heart get damaged and clogged, it can lead to a heart attack. If this happens in the arteries that carry blood to your brain, it can lead to a stroke or vascular dementia.

11/06/2021

Air pollution can be very harmful. Research shows that it can affect your heart and circulation by:

- damaging the inside walls of your blood vessels, causing them to become narrower and harder
restricting the movement of your blood vessels, which can increase your blood pressure and add to the strain on your heart
- making your blood more likely to clot
affecting the normal electrical functioning of your heart which could cause abnormal heart rhythms
causing small changes to the structure of the heart like those that are seen in the early stages of heart failure.

This damage can contribute to the development of new health problems, or put people with existing heart and circulatory conditions at increased risk of events like a heart attack or stroke.

Protect yourself and your heart from air pollution!

Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute (bpm). A normal heart rate is between 60 and 100 bpm while you’re resting.

Why should you measure your heart rate?

Measuring your heart rate can help you track your fitness and monitor if you’re exercising at the right level for you.

Your heart, like any other muscle, needs physical activity to keep it healthy. In most cases regular exercise can help improve your overall health and manage many of the risk factors for heart and circulatory diseases, such as diabetes.

Low heart rate (bradycardia)

A low heart rate is classified as a heart rate less than 60 bpm. The medical term for a heart rate of around or less than this is bradycardia.

For some people such as athletes, bradycardia doesn’t pose a health risk. But if you have a low heart rate and are experiencing symptoms like fainting, fatigue and dizziness then you should make an appointment with your GP.

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is when your coronary arteries become narrowed by a build-up of fatty material within their walls. These arteries supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. CHD is sometimes called ischaemic heart disease and can lead to heart attacks. We offer many tests which can help detect the presence of CHD. Contact us today and get yourself checked out.

An exercise ECG, also called an exercise tolerance test, is an electrocardiogram (ECG) that is recorded while you are walking on a treadmill or cycling on an exercise bike. The aim of the test is to see how your heart works when you are exerting yourself.

What can an exercise ECG show?

The exercise ECG helps doctors find out if you have coronary heart disease, as it shows whether your heart muscle is getting enough blood from the coronary arteries during physical activity. It can also show if you have been having symptoms of angina as any areas where there is a lack of oxygen to the heart is reflected on the ECG tracing.

Palpitations describe the sensation of feeling your own heart beating.
They often feel like a fluttering, pounding, a thud or movement in your chest that might last for a few seconds or minutes. You may feel this in your neck, throat or through your ear when you’re lying down.

Palpitations can be caused by heart conditions such as arrhythmia, heart valve disease and heart failure but also by certain medicines, stress, anxiety and smoking.

Contact us now if you have been suffering from palpitations and book your ECG (electrocardiogram) for only £95.
