Kudirat Abiola: 28 Years After

Kudirat Abiola departed from her Lagos residence in her car on Tuesday, June 4, 1996, at approximately 9:30 AM en route to an appointment at the Canadian High Commission. She was joined in the car by her assistant, Mark Olufemi Adesina, and her driver, Dauda Atanda. Adesina sat in the front passenger seat beside Atanda, while Kudirat sat in the rear.

At the wheel of Kudirat's white Mercedes-Benz, driving down the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway, and just past the 7-Up Junction on Oregun Road in Ikeja, two Peugeots—one a 505 model, the other a 504—emerged from nowhere to confront them. One of the cars swerved twice in front of Kudirat's Mercedes, forcing Atanda to throttle down.

Instantly, a phalanx of gunmen, from very close range, began firing a machine gun. The rain of bullets pierced both the windscreen and rear window of Kudirat's car, which then veered off the road. Adesina instinctively dropped to the floor as shards of broken glass and spent ammunition rained down upon him. Miraculously, Adesina survived the fierce gunfire.

One of the bullets entered through Kudirat's forehead and deeply penetrated her brain. She was taken immediately to Eko Hospital, where a team of neurosurgeons operated on her to remove the bullet from her head. Kudirat Abiola died due to the injuries from 12:15 to 12:30 PM.

This incident, which occurred 28 years ago, has become historic. It is a milestone moment in Nigeria and a warning to the families of political activists during such volatile periods.

Ayinla Omowura, The Apala Genius, Can you still remember him?

When people hear the beat called Apala, the name that comes to mind most often is that of the late musical genius, Ayinla Waheed Gbogbolowo, AKA Ayinla Omowura.

Although his fame was short-lived, for he died at a young age, he was and is still respected for his achievements in music. 2021 makes it 41 years since the music legend passed away. It is only right that we bring ourselves to the memory of who he was and his impact.

Ayinla Omowura was born in the 1930s; most historians say he was born in 1933, but the exact date is unclear. According to oral history, he was born to a goldsmith father, who is rumoured to be a Sakara musician, and his mother was a trader.

Most of his childhood stories are not available to the public because it was perceived that he lived a very private life.

Ayinla's music life was full of rumours, battles, and rivals, yet he impacted the industry.

Many people thought his nickname was a way for him to boast about his musical skills, but according to sources related to the legend, Omowura was a coin of his mother's name, Wura. Then, he included Omo to acclaim it more for himself, forming the name Omo-Wura.

Ayinla started from the bottom, as most famous musicians did; he was a backup singer for some musicians, especially one called Osho. He was located in Igbo-Ore back then. This was Ayinla's status before he joined a musical band founded by Adewole, the traditional drummer.

Joining Adewole's band was a good decision for him, as he was the lead singer in the group and had the opportunity to exhibit his voice, which he did effortlessly. He and the band made so many achievements that, together, they released 22 LPs (a long-play album, which is mostly 4-6 songs long per LP). Their fame spread like wildfire, as most audiences in southwest Nigeria loved their songs.

Ayinla, the lead vocalist, got more fame from the job than any of the team members. He was recognised for his signature tune, which kept people dancing at every party. His lyrics were also of great quality, soothing both the young and the old. No one could be compared to him back then.

Ayinla Omowura's death could be seen as "one death too many." No one saw it coming except after his death when those closest to him said he had foreseen his death. Even with this information, no one expected the icon to pass away so quickly and young. Ayinla died at the age of 47 on May 6, 1980. He was reportedly involved in a fight with his manager, Bayewu, a childhood friend. He died from the effect of a hit on his head by a bottle.

The news came as a shock to many, especially to his band members. It was an unfortunate incident. No one would think his close friend would betray him in such a way. Although Bayewu was sentenced to death by the Nigerian government, it did not fix the heartbreak or holes his death left in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and fans.

Nigeria-South Africa 'Bolt to Bolt' War: Digital Prank Paralyzes Cities, Nigerian's Suspended

A bizarre ride-hailing conflict erupted between Nigeria and South Africa. Nigerian X-users have reportedly been booking and cancelling Bolt rides in Cape Town and Johannesburg, causing a surge in pricing and leaving many South Africans stranded. Some Nigerians have even scheduled fake pick-ups and deliveries of goods.

In response, Bolt suspended accounts involving fraudulent ride requests and limited inter-country ride bookings. The company cited a significant increase in such requests between Nigeria and South Africa. Nigerian X-users have inferred they would be employing VPNs.

This digital tussle has real-world consequences. A South African user pleaded, "Nigerians, please forgive us," admitting they had to trek to work due to the ride shortage.

The incident highlights how interconnected our digital world has become, where actions in one country can directly impact daily life in another. It also raises questions about ride-hailing platforms' vulnerabilities to coordinated user actions.
