WHO’S AFRAID OF ROMANÉE-CONTI?
A SHORTCUT TO DRINKING GREAT WINES
OUT NOW IN THE UK ⚡️🍷

Available now from Noble Rot restaurants with a free tote bag! Also available from our website through the link in bio 👆 and from all good bookshops! 🔥

Take the guesswork out of great wine with Noble Rot’s Dan Keeling.

Wine can be daunting without an incisive guide. Who’s Afraid of Romanée-Conti?is a no-holds-barred voyage of discovery, from sourcing good cheap vino to drinking its most unattainable and holiest of grails – Romanée-Conti – and the universe of interstellar wines that lie in-between.From new-school Burgundy, Barolo and Champagne to Tenerife, Corsica and Chianti, Noble Rot co-founder Dan Keeling visits some of the world’s most renowned vignerons and vineyards on a quest to find out why some wines matter – and why many others don’t. Throughout, he details the complex aspects of traditionalist wine culture, offering insights into subjects such as sulphur in winemaking, building a cellar, and many personal recommendations on what to buy for every pocket. Who’s Afraid of Romanée-Contialso contains over 100 full colour photographs of the vignerons and vineyards featured in the book, the majority taken by Benjamin McMahon.

NEW NOBLE ROT ISSUE 36 - ‘DIRECTOR’S CUP’
OUT NEXT WEEK - Friday 25th October 2024
SPECIAL DUAL COVER ISSUE by

From the very first sip, dinner with this issue’s guest, Ridley Scott, was another trademark Noble Rot interview that ran to more than several glasses and unearthed some little-known insights. Responsible for some of the greatest movies of all time including Alien and Gladiator, Scott is also a wine lover who owns vineyards in Provence, and has a maverick perspective on everything from cooking the perfect scrambled eggs to how AI is changing the world. On the run up to the release of Gladiator II, with many projects backed up, Noble Rot discovers what drives the 86 year old’s relentless work ethic in ‘Director’s Cup’. And while we’re on the subject of AI, sommeliers may like to hear that they’ve got little to fear from it stealing their jobs – at least if Hannah Crosbie’s conversation with ChatGPT after asking it to mimic a Noble Rot somm is anything to go by (‘I Drink, Therefore I Am’). Also in this issue: * Marina O’Loughlin reveals her identity after years as an anonymous restaurant critic * We welcome back Delia Smith, who writes about her ‘Greatest Meal’ * Our roving wine critic Keira Knightley gives her verdict on another eclectic selection of wines * We profile Kwame Onwuachi of NYC’s Tatiana and Merlin Labron-Johnson of Somerset’s Osip * Kermit Lynch tells us about an eye-opening encounter in a Paris wine shop * We visit the late, legendary Italian gastronome Luigi Veronelli’s mythical Bergamo cellar, as well as Chartreuse and some great Languedoc growers. Lastly, Alice Feiring speaks to The Four Horsemen’s James Murphy and Justin Chearno about a decade of their adored Brooklyn restaurant. Tragically, since the interview, the much-loved Justin has passed away and will be hugely missed by everybody who knew him.

Well done to Riyo, Noble Rot Mayfair’s new bartender from Toyko, for solving the mystery of just where Norman Cook dined for his greatest meal in the current issue of the mag.

Having arrived one evening in a blur for dinner all he had to immortalise this extraordinary shabu shabu meal was a photo but no name and address.

Now we know the shabu shabu restaurant is atelier Morimoto EXE in Roppongi, Tokyo.

We’ve been in touch with Norm and he says “A thousand thank yous. I can go back now!

It doesn’t take an ancient Greek philosopher to recognise that the more you learn about wine, the more you know you don’t know. This was recently reaffirmed to Noble Rot at a restaurant in Switzerland’s Valais, when presented with a gigantic carte des vins full of almost totally unrecognisable bottles. In our defence, the fact that the Swiss (quite rightfully) refuse to share their venerable vinos – exporting as little as 1% of their annual production – means that outsiders barely catch a glimpse of their world class Fendants, Syrahs and Petite Arvines. Yet traversing the winding roads around some spectacular mountainside vineyards both here, and in nearby Savoie days earlier, proved to us indisputably that Alpine masters like Marie-Thérèse Chappaz and Domaine des Ardoisières mean business. Read our profile of Swiss and French Alpine wines in Noble Rot 34.

Also in this issue…
…we have Keira Knightley reviewing an eclectic selection of wines, from Envínate’s 2021  ‘Doade’ Lousas (“It would be impossible to find a person who wouldn’t like this wine”) to Blossom Hill (“If this is the taste of summer, we are all f**ked”)
…Marina O’Loughlin interviews British national treasure and comedy polymath Bill Bailey over lunch at Noble Rot Mayfair – not long after her review of Narbonne’s Les Grands Buffets, a plentiful ‘all you can eat’ restaurant featuring, among many other wonders, “towers of lobsters”, “acres of oysters” and “foie gras in ten different iterations”.
…Kate Spicer explores ‘Drunken Monkey Theory’ – aka the reason why, like our primate pal, loving wine is in our DNA – and profiles François Chartier, the Atomic Somm who uses molecular science to improve wine and food pairing.
Plus: Rush’s Geddy Lee tells us about becoming a wine geek; Joe Beef’s David McMillan recounts his Greatest Meal; Jay McInerney recounts the tempestuous story of the Mondavi dynasty, Californian wine’s first family; and Levi Dalton considers when is the right time to drink Barolo and much more!

Our Story

Located on Bloomsbury’s historic Lambs Conduit Street, Noble Rot Restaurant & Wine Bar has been a wine bar since 1973, and was originally built in 1700. Chefs Stephen Harris and Paul Weaver from the Michelin-starred The Sportsman in Whitstable oversee a menu of fine Harris-style cooking; expect to find oysters, cold cuts, bread and olives in the front bar, with an expanded restaurant menu in the back. The wine list ranges from deliciously undervalued wines by the glass to hard-to-find gems from the worlds leading winemakers; expect to find mature bottles from legendary domaines like Jean-Louis Chave, Armand Rousseau, Château Latour, Château Rayas and Domaine Tempier at reasonable prices.

Noble Rot Restaurant & Wine Bar won the wine list award at the World Restaurant Awards 2019, Wine List Of The Year at 2018, 2017 & 2016 National Restaurant Awards and 2016 Harden’s London Restaurant Awards. We were voted #28 in the top 100 at the National Restaurant Awards 2019.

We’re thrilled to have found what we think is the perfect spot to showcase the spirit of Noble Rot Magazine in one of central Londons most attractive, independent shop-lined streets, and we hope to welcome you to our new home soon. We take reservations for the restaurant online and by phone, whilst tables in the front bar section are allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
