July is Disability Pride Month. We spoke to Drew Collins, a current student who is living with Hypermobile Ehlerโs Danlos Syndrome, to learn more about her experiences living with a hidden disability.
"Disability Pride Month means a recognition of the struggles and empowerment which comes with having a disability and sharing that with the world. This is in hopes of breaking taboos and stereotypes and encouraging equality and empathy...
"My advice for anyone wanting to be a disability ally is to be empathetic and truly listen to what students with disabilities have to say. Equally, be curious. I know a speak for a lot of other disabled individuals when I say that I would rather others be curious and ask a lot of questions to enhance their understanding of my condition than walk on eggshells around me, which can unfortunately feel more isolating."

"Pride is represented at the University in a multitude of ways. One of which are the various Pride parade entries that the University has participated in across the country. I recently attended Birmingham Pride and The University of Law entry walked in the parade. Further, Pride is represented by the donations given by staff and students during Pride Month who have donated to various LGBTQIA+ charities.
"Most of all, Pride is represented on campus every day by the students and staff members who continuously promote equality and attend University-operated LGBTQIA+ events.
"My experience at The University of Law, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ Society, has been overwhelmingly positive. I have always felt like I belonged, and I feel valued as an individual. There has always been a plethora of support in the form of services provided by the University and individuals to speak to about any issues or concerns." ๐ณ๏ธโ๐

Our Rich Heritage
The University of Law is one of the UK's longest-established specialist providers of legal education. Our origins can be traced back to 1876 with the formation of the leading tutorial firm Gibson & Weldon, and later on, with the establishment of The Law Society School of Law. In 1962 the two were amalgamated to establish The College of Law. We were the first-ever independent institution to be granted degree awarding powers and not long after, in 2012 we gained university title.
Weโre at the heart of legal education as the acknowledged leader in innovative, professional legal education for prospective lawyers and professional development training for those already qualified. Over the years, we have worked with virtually every UK law firm to help meet their training and development needs, with many firms sending their trainees exclusively to us.
We made history in 2006 by becoming the first independent institution to be granted degree awarding powers by the Privy Council, leading to the development of our professionally-focused Bachelor and Master of Laws degree programmes.
With a rich heritage and a reputation for innovation and contemporary teaching practices, we continuously focus on developing the best legal minds.
