"As journalists we are often told that we need to be resilient, but often when we talk about being resilient what we're actually asking journalists to do is cut themselves off from their emotions and feelings."

This year's MediaStrong event was hosted at City, University of London and explored mental health and journalism. The event was live streamed by Sky News to newsrooms and NGOs around the world. City collaborated with Sky News, Safely Held Spaces and Ulster University to host the event.

Journalists gave powerful testimonies on the impact that crisis reporting and witnessing suffering can have on those within the industry and discussed the need for more mental health support.

“This conference showed that we can bring together an economist, a criminologist, a political scientist and more, and understand each other and how great forces shape our world.”

From a debate about whether we are in a New Cold War to a discussion on if the public has lost trust in the government due to social media, answers to the big questions were considered at the conference “Polycrisis Interrogated”.

Moving forward, the Finsbury Institute will be working with attendees to create papers, blogs and reports based on the conference. In the coming months, the centre will be creating an advisory board.
