Will you be moving into accommodation this autumn, or to uni? We spoke to BSc Business Psychology student Saim Farook about his experience of living with parents and commuting while he studies. 📚
"Commuting to Birkbeck is easy – it’s about 40 minutes door to door. Eventually I want to move out but it’s so expensive, so living with my family whilst I’m studying is helping me to save for the future." 🏡
How does this affect his social life?
"There’s only 30 people on my course and we have a group WhatsApp chat. We often go to the Birkbeck bar after lectures and on nights out as well as have revision sessions at Starbucks. I’ve met people from all walks of life, with some students in careers already, working in companies including JP Morgan and Aviva, so it’s great for networking."
And on Birkbeck's London location, Saim said 👇
"I really liked Birkbeck’s central London location which offers an amazing nightlife and it’s a vibrant student area with other unis nearby. I can’t imagine living and working anywhere else but London, I love the hustle and bustle of everything and that there’s always something going on. I can’t see myself ever leaving!" 💃

This is the first review to shed light on doctors’ experiences of being sexually harassed by patients.

"It’s something that’s worth doing because you learn so much. It’s so important to be a sounding board for students as somebody that is independent. It’s a privilege to find yourself in that position, to be that bridge between academics and the world out there."
Nerice Gietel (MSc Human Resource Development and Consultancy, 2013) has been mentoring final-year Birkbeck students for 10 years. Read about why the mum-of-one would recommend the Mentoring Pathways scheme to others and how it’s kept her on her toes: https://ow.ly/4PXy50Thyox

After completing her MSc in Management at Birkbeck, Olivia Hui was craving that connection to the BBK community. That's why she applied for our Pathways programme, a scheme that pairs final-year students with alumni and corporate volunteers who can offer guidance, advice and support.
Olivia formed a strong mentoring relationship with Alin Stanica, a part-time BSc Business and Marketing student. She nominated him for Mentee of the Year, which he won at Woburn House last month 🥳 Accepting his award, Alin said: “My mentor helped me put into words my ideas and what I was thinking, because when you don’t have that experience you don’t know."
If you'd be interested in volunteering your time and talent as a mentor in Mentoring Pathways 2024-25, find out more about the process and Olivia's experience: https://ow.ly/fEMB50T9xgc

The new research supported by Birkbeck has revealed that changes in HR practices, specifically avoiding disciplinary investigations as a first response and instead utilising informal resolution methods through training, coaching, and mentoring, can significantly improve and reduce sickness absence.
By implementing these changes to practices, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, an Wales organisation employing over 16,000 staff, saw a 71% reduction in employee investigations, over 3,000 fewer days of sickness absence annually, and savings exceeding £730,000 per year. 🥳
