How can YOU help save our planet? This awesome and inspiring guide, written by McFly bassist and environmental activist Dougie Poynter, will show you how to get involved in the mission to cut out single-use plastic.
Plastic is everywhere and it sucks. It fills up our oceans, endangers our wildlife and never goes away. So it's time to take action, find ways to cut down our plastic use and help protect our environment. Together we can make a difference!
As a lifelong supporter of environmental causes and a key player in the campaign to ban microbeads in the UK, Dougie is always on the hunt for ways to reduce and replace plastic. This campaigning book, his first solo authored project, draws on his own experiences in the fight against plastic waste – the problems he's encountered and the solutions he's found. It covers the history of plastic, introduces us to some key campaigners and eco entrepreneurs and is full of top tips and infographics.
The clear and easy steps in Plastic Sucks! You Can Make a Difference show us how we can all make small changes and become champions for our planet.

Spicy Fish and Chips
This is a lighter version of a normal fish and chip recipe, and cooked in the oven rather than deep fried. The spices give it an extra zing. The example in the picture was made with salmon fillets.
All the ingredients are available from the village’s stores, the Veg Van and the Refill Den.

Thank you, Tollesbury!
We have had a hugely successful first couple of months with our TCP drawer recycling scheme. So much so we are going to expand the list, to include items we can reuse, repurpose and recycle.
Look out for the change in posters and drawer labels, but we will be adding:
- Left over candle wax
- Corks
- Rubber bands
- Small electrical wires
- Crayons
- Empty medication blister packs
- Vapes
- Used stamps
- Contact lens cases
Thank you to all our venues for the continued support.
Have you gone to check out the progress at Tollesbury School?
The workers are encouraging children to come and see what is happening and they are happy to answer any questions.
Why not make it a summer holiday activity and engage our children in the progress of their school and community.

9kgs of plant pots have been taken to Perrywood Garden Centre Tiptree to be reused or recycled.
They are collected at the seed shed in the GP surgery car park.
Gentle reminder that they should be clean, please.
FAQ: What's in the Picnic Party Kit?
Enough to cater for 30 people! Why spend all that money on disposable party set when you can rent this out for a fraction of the cost?

Strawberry Tart with Balsamic and Honey
This may sound slightly bizarre as a mix of flavours, but the vinegar stops it being over-sweet and the vinegar/honey mixture becomes jam-like on cooking. The recipe is super-simple and delicious for summer. It doesn’t store well, so you need to eat it once it is made!
All ingredients are available from the Fred’s stores and the Veg Van.

Nesting boxes installed for Swifts in Tollesbury.
Here pictured are four swift nesting boxes which were installed by Jonathan from TCP last year to this property on West Street. An electronic caller was also installed which made the swift call to attract other birds. Swifts spend between Mid-May and August with us and then fly to as far as South Africa for the rest of the year. They feed solely on flying insects and can eat as many as 40,000 in a day!
Sadly Swifts have declined by 70% since 1995 in the UK as they exclusively nest in buildings and have suffered habitat loss where we have plugged gaps in old buildings. They mate for life and will return to the same nesting site year after year.
But by installing boxes this gives an opportunity for these fantastic birds to have space to nest and hopefully increase their numbers. Boxes need to be at least 5m above ground with a clear underneath for when they swoop in and out. It shouldn’t be in direct sunlight and on a north or east facing wall.
If you would be interested in having boxes installed then get in touch and we can come and take a look.

Yesterday Kensuke's Kingdom was released at the cinemas. Unfortunately, not many local cinemas are showing it. However, FirstSite in Colchester is. A beautiful film with a beautiful message for the whole family to enjoy.
"A young boy, shipwrecked on a remote island, learns about Kensuke’s Kingdom after he discovers that he’s not alone. He encounters an old Japanese soldier, who retreated there after World War II.
As dangerous invaders appear on the horizon, it becomes clear they must join forces to save their fragile island paradise.
This gripping hand-drawn animated tale with its message of working together to protect nature, has never felt more relevant."

August's book is The End of the Ocean by Maja Lunde.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
2019: seventy-year-old Signe sets out on a hazardous voyage to cross an entire ocean in only a sailboat. She is haunted by the loss of the love of her life, and is driven by a singular and all-consuming mission to make it back to him.
2041: David flees with his young daughter, Lou, from a war-torn Southern Europe plagued by drought. They are on a desperate search to reunite with their family when they find Signe’s abandoned sailboat in a parched French garden, miles away from the nearest shore.
As David and Lou discover personal effects from Signe’s travels, their journey of survival and hope weaves together with Signe’s, forming a heartbreaking, inspiring story about the power of nature and the human spirit.

It's Plastic Free July and our final tip to reduce your plastic usage is around keeping plastics in use for longer!
Going plastic-free has its positives and negatives. Plastic weighs less than glass so can reduce transport emissions, but glass is more widely recycled and contains a higher portion of recycled content which can reduce its impact on resource consumption globally. If removing plastic from your life completely is unfeasible, make your plastic containers go further. For example, when a plastic bottle finishes, try your local refill shop and fill those containers with new products including wet and dry goods. We can also reuse containers like old butter and ice cream tubs as sandwich boxes, useful tubs for screws or nails, or planters for seedlings.

It's Plastic Free July and our eighth tip to reduce your plastic usage is around milk bottles!
Consider getting your milk delivered in glass bottles, which are reused and recycled instead of your usual plastic pint. More and more of us are making the switch to have milk and other items, like fruit juices, eggs and bread, delivered by a milkman without the plastic packaging. In the UK, around 614,000 people now use a milk delivery service (AHDB) so check to see if you can make the switch in your area.
☀️ The sun is shining, and it's the perfect time for a family picnic or party! Why buy disposable cups, plates, and cutlery when you can rent our eco-friendly picnic set instead? 🌳♻️
For just £25, you can rent a reusable picnic set that includes bowls, cups, plates, jugs, and cutlery for up to 30 people! Here's how it works:
Collect your set in the morning.
Enjoy your day!
Return it clean and complete the following morning to get £20 of your £25 back.
It's a win-win! Save money and help the environment. 🌍✨
Reserve your picnic set now by DM'ing us or The Book Nook. The set is available at The Book Nook for collection Let’s make this summer memorable and sustainable!
It saddens us to say that Berty has now left Tollesbury School and will not be returning. This is not due to lack of use, but due to the company no longer trading. If you have clothes that need recycling, St Helena's Hospice in Maldon (behind Morrisons) accepts donations.
It's Plastic Free July and our seventh tip to reduce your plastic usage is around glitter!
All glitter is made from plastic. Due to its size and composition, glitter can last for many years in natural environments, breaking down into smaller microplastics and being ingested by wildlife. Even biodegradable glitter is a myth. There is no legal limit on how long it takes to decompose in the natural environment before it is called ‘biodegradable’, so many of the biodegradable glitters could last as long as plastic. It also has the same impact on wildlife and the natural environment – small particles are easily ingested by wildlife and could have harmful effects. Instead, steer clear of all glitter and opt for alternative decorations instead.
🔍🛒 Our scavenger hunt is in full swing! Look what we found at the local butcher's! Have you spotted one of our signs yet? 📸 Snap a pic or selfie with it and tag us or drop it in the comments. Let's see who finds the most! 🕵️♀️🕵️♂️
It's Plastic Free July and our sixth tip to reduce your plastic usage is around chewing gum!
In England, around 87% of streets are stained with gum (Keep Britain Tidy) so always make sure you dispose of chewing gum in an appropriate bin, never on the floor. Did you know conventional chewing gum is made from plastic? This makes it take longer to decompose and it will break down into microplastics. Several plastic-free alternatives are now on the shelves, so look for brands that detail the ingredients of their gum and are committed to ending plastic pollution.
It's Plastic Free July and our fifth tip to reduce your plastic usage is around tea bags!
Some teabags contain hidden plastics such as glues used to seal the bags, in the fabric of the bag itself, or in the packaging. For this reason, not all teabags can go into garden compost as they won’t break down (or may break down into microplastics). And some alternative bags, such as those made from polylactic acid (PLA), can’t go in your council food waste collection. Always check what you can put in your food bin where you live, using your council website. To avoid these plastics, try loose leaf tea which can be used with a strainer, or reusable teabags. Alternatively, look for brands that are taking action to remove plastic from their tea – try bags that are unbleached and organic, in cardboard packaging.
Each week we will be showing you where and what you can recycle.
This week we focus on Tollesbury Primary School.
