Ladies – don’t forget to check your breasts! 🌸🌸

😕 I did 3 weeks ago and found a lump in my right breast. I’d just lost a beautiful friend to breast cancer and I’ve also just completed advanced specialist training in nutrition for cancer, with the aim to help women with breast cancer. All I’d done for the last 6 months was think about cancer, maybe somehow I’d manifested it?

I tried not to panic, knowing all my training would have been for added reason.

I left it a week just to see if it went down and to see if it was linked to cycle changes. Thanks to perimenopause my cycle is pretty erratic so I couldn’t link it, but after a week the lump was still there.

I called the GP on a Friday. I saw a lady doctor the following Monday who referred me to Bolton hospital and before I arrived home I’d got an appointment for 10 days time.

The appointment last Thursday took 1hr 15mins and after 2 individual examinations, a mammogram and an ultrasound they concluded it was just fibrous breast tissue. (I apparently have very dense breasts – who knew? Especially when you don’t really get to cop a feel of anyone else’s to know what’s normal!)

I felt huge relief that I don’t have to worry, but sad knowing one of the other women (or men) sat in the waiting room might not be feeling quite so lucky. 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime (2018).

🌸🌸 Early detection is super important... so EVERY MONTH check your b***s and anything that’s abnormal for you please get it checked. 🙏🏻

Food really is medicine! 🥄

❄️ Last week my physio diagnosed me with a left frozen shoulder. In brief, think knot of elastic bands in shoulder joint that have clamped tight causing any left rotation or overhead moments impossible and extremely painful. 6-18 months recovery time… gentle exercises and pain relief. Double bu**er! 🥲

💊 So full anti-inflammatory protocol for me prior to thinking about strong pain meds which I know will destroy my gut health which I’ve been working hard to rebuild the last 8 months.

➕ The benefits of using food as medicine is that it works on so many levels just not on my shoulder…

🫚 Ginger and turmeric is anti-inflammatory - all disease is inflammation and perimenopause is a time where inflammation increases due to a drop in protective oestrogen.

🥕 Carrots are a source of beta carotene (vit A) for skin regeneration and immune health.

🧅 Onions provide a great prebiotic fibre for gut health and supports liver detoxification.

🫘 Butter beans - a much needed source protein to help heal muscles and tendons.

👉 Save this post as you never know when you might need it…

😢 It’s all a bit emosh today…

😍 As a super proud mum not being able to share little T’s beautiful face on social media has been hard. But today feels right and special because she’s come a long way from the little girl we met just before starting nursery.

It’s a day of many lasts…

❤️ The last ever day of primary school - it’s all we’ve ever known since she came to live with us.

❤️ The last school run - part of me is relieved to not have to battle the traffic and the other part is going to miss the school gates social and the shared car and walking journeys singing Taylor Swift.

❤️ The last of being needed as a mum in the same capacity - letting go is hard at any age, as I’m sure many of you already know!

🙄 But I’m certain it’s NOT going to be the last eye-roll and no-doubt will be the beginning of even more!

Someone pass me the tissues quick! 🥲

🥴 Fancy a nice refreshing drink tonight without the fuzzy head tomorrow?

☀️ I get it – it’s a sunny afternoon and a nice gin and tonic after work out-out or in the garden is soooo appealing right now. But if you’re anything like me the thought of wasting half of my weekend by ‘not firing on all cylinders’, or the middle of the night thirst/hot flush/trip to the loo etc. leaves you thinking twice, then maybe try one of these non-alcoholic pimms instead...

Virgin Pimms 🍓🥒🫐🍋
• Use any combo of fruits and herbs you have in kitchen or garden – strawberry, blueberries, oranges, lemon, fresh mint, shaved cucumber and add sparkling water rather than lemonade. It also works with a dash of elderflower cordial or balsamic vinegar.

• Serve in a nice glass with a good bit of garnish (washed) and I promise you won’t miss the alcohol or suffer FOMO and you’ll be thanking me tomorrow if you do!

🫚 And if you’re out and about most places serve a great selection of non-alcoholic cocktails or alcohol-free options. Or try a ginger ale or ginger beer with loads of ice or even a kombucha – why not boost your health whilst you’re at it.

🍸 And if you really do want a bit of the real stuff, make sure you drink lots of water in-between and start the day tomorrow with a lemon and warm water to give your liver a bit of an extra boost :)

⭐️I share lots of tips and recipes like this in my monthly newsletter. If you want to sign up click the link in my bio above.☝️

Just look at the size of these organic lemons! 🍋🍋

☕️One of the best things you can do in the morning is have a fresh lemon and ginger tea when you first get up.

Here’s why...

🍋🫚Lemon & ginger are both anti-inflammatory

🍋 Lemon is great for your liver, supporting the detoxification of hormones, medications, alcohol and enzyme production, plus its flushes the toxins out of your skin making it nice and glowy!

🫚 Ginger can help to gently stimulate bowel movements, especially good if you don’t go daily

⚖️ And whilst lemon is acidic, it gets converted to alkaline in your body helping to neutralising an acidic inflammatory environment. We all need our body to be more alkaline.

🔪Slice and add to hot water, but don’t forget if the lemon isn’t organic DON’T leave the skin on and squeeze in the juice instead… otherwise it’s a nice cup with added chemicals and pesticides too – Ugg!

❤️‍🔥 And if you suffer from reflux give the lemon a miss and just opt for ginger. You don’t want to increase any excess acid in your oesophagus.

🍋🫚Do you like lemon and ginger tea?

🔋24 hours in The Lake District to reset and recharge…

🌤️ The rain held off once we got there (we never have much luck whenever we visit!). The scenery stunning, the food delicious (so much so I didn’t take any pictures 😂) and a halfway walk up Helvellyn… a grumpy tween and an arthritic Labrador limited our quest to reach the peak, but we’ll be back to do it properly with unlimited snacks 😂

🌈 It’s all about the colour this coming July...

🍽️ As much and as many as you can fit on your plate at one time!

Big fresh rainbow salads & colourful stir fries, steamed, crunchy veg with buttery new potatoes, fruit smoothies with hidden spinach, kale and even raw broccoli...🥦 🥕🍆🍅

Just don‘t forget to add a PROTEIN source to every meal with the veg:
– Salmon or oily fish 🍣
– Lean meat such as turkey, chicken, pork & beef 🍗
– Chickpeas, beans & lentils 🫘
– Feta & halloumi (in moderation) 🧀
– Kefir yogurt, nuts & seeds (for smoothies) 🥜

☝️Hands up who knew beans, peas, spinach and mushrooms also contained small amounts of protein?

Mis-information soapbox alert! 📦

🥣 A number of my lovely IBS suffering clients have been advised by medical professionals to eat more cereal (especially Rice Crispies, Weetabix & Special K) as a way to increase fibre!

🔈 But let the truth be told... there is no faster way to irritate your IBS than to eat cereal. It’s a hard INSOLUBLE fibre – and unless it’s a nice home made granola with oats, soaked nuts and seeds and is low in sugar it’s a huge No No!

👿 Most shop bought cereals are packed with sugar, damaged oils (palm, vegetable or rapeseed), added iron in the form teeny-tiny non-absorbable iron fillings and added B vitamins (because they’ve had so much taken out they have to add synthetic ones back in)! In fact it pretty difficult to find a good shop-bought one.

📈Rice Crispies specifically aren‘t as irritating because there is NOTHING in them, but they’ll do a great job of spiking your blood sugar as they get converted to sugar in a nanosecond they are so processed.

🚽Soluble fibre is what you need more of. The nice soothing kind that calms your gut and normalises your toilet trips AND contains actual nutrition!

🍏Breakfast should consist of options like overnight oats with soaked nuts and yogurt, chia pudding, flax seeds, stewed apple, nutritionally packed smoothies that include fruit, veg and plenty of good fats and protein...

I’ll get off my soapbox now...

🙋🏻‍♀️Do you eat cereal for breakfast?

📸 Posting on social media is bloody hard…

I was born in a generation where selfies were unimaginable and I spent my career directing from the other side of the lens!

🌦️ Show more of your authentic self we are told… That’s fine when you are feeling positive and things are going well, but it’s really hard to be consistently upbeat when you’re not.

🎢 It seems to come in waves… peaks of ideas and positivity and then troughs of wanting to hide from the online world. I’ll do anything to avoid getting my face on camera. If it wasn’t for pushing me out of my comfort zone I’d be faceless!

🙇‍♀️ Hours of time spent thinking, designing and pouring your heart into a post that only gets 2 likes (and that’s from your mates) can be really disheartening. And that’s even if it get’s seen.

🔨 People appear to be nailing it on the ‘grid’, but sometimes the reality behind the scenes is very different.

🤹 Most influencers have teams of people and money behind them. The majority of self employed women in the wellness industry have retrained like me and are working another job and running a family, whilst trying to create a successful business in what they love… I know I didn’t realise when I retrained I’d be expected to plaster my face all over the socials and sometimes be criticised for it!

❤️ So please spare a thought when you’re scrolling and don’t be a stranger - if you’ve read a post please like or comment. It helps the algorithm with getting us noticed, so we can continue doing what we love and not go back to our corporate jobs!

Yes – You can eat MORE and still lose weight! 🙌🏻

🥬 If you’re restricting your diet by reducing calories and not seeing any difference on the scales, its because you’re eating the wrong kinds of food... Calories are certainly NOT all equal.

🥬 In fact I have seen a number of women recently whose aim is to lose a lot of weight, who are eating only 2 meals a day. I love being able to tell them they aren’t eating enough, and we work to increase more nutritious foods into their diet.

🥬 Calorie restriction in some causes your body to panic and for fear of where the next fuel source is coming from it holds onto the calories no matter what your weight.
..And as women in mid-life we need a regular nutritious source of food to keep our hormones on an even keel and energy in our tank in the form of regular meals throughout the day.

🥬 However that’s not to say fasting isn’t good for some people with some conditions, or that by stopping your second and third plate helping isn‘t going to make a difference – it all depends on your own personal starting point.

🥬 But if weight loss is your goal, you may want to start by looking at the nutritional value of what you’re eating, rather the amount or counting calories. That way you can feel full and lose weight at the same time – that’s a win-win in my book!

🎉🎉We’re super excited to finally share that ‘Bloom’ – my new online course with Sarah Osborne (an ADHD nutritionist) launches on Wednesday 5th June.

🌹 Life can be challenging as you enter and navigate perimenopause, especially if you have ADHD or have started to notice ADHD traits.

🌹We both recognised the lack of information and support out there when it comes to nutrition, diet and lifestyle – much of which doesn’t take into account the nuances of a neurodivergent neurotype.

🌹We created Bloom to empower women. We want to help you understand what is going on from a more scientific perspective and give you some easy tools to support yourself and help manage some problematic symptoms during the transition.

🌹Knowledge is power, and while the science is new and evolving, there are many simple steps you can take to empower and support yourself right now!

👉 Listen to our Instagram Live at 12pm – Wednesday 5th June, where we’ll chat details - follow me .nutrition or

👇 Comment ‘BLOOM ME’ below if you’d like to know more and we’ll send you the course link once its launched.

💫 Do you invest in your health & wellbeing?

👫 Whilst I mostly see women, I do also support men too. IBS seems to be so common amongst so many people I see. But the triggers are different for everyone. Sometimes it’s linked to stress, sometimes food intolerances or diet, sometimes a dysbiotic gut (unhappy tummy bugs) or a combination of those and others...

🔍 Don’t just accept IBS as part of your every day. It shouldn’t be – It’s your body’s way of telling you something isn’t right. Identifying the root cause is your first step to resolving it.

🦷 In David’s case, poor gum health was a big contributor. Your mouth is linked to your intestines and can help drive IBS, but we haven’t been taught to see the body as a whole and how everything is inextricably linked – although it seems obvious once you know.

🙌🏻 After a 12-week programme David saw great improvements both with his IBS and gums – a definite win-win in my book 🙂.

❓Do you see your health & wellbeing as an investment or a cost?

19/05/2024

🤷🏻‍♀️Which one are you – perhaps it’s both?

🌧️ Both present with similar symptoms, exhaustion, irritable, bloating, brain fog, insomnia, low mood, low mojo, anxiety, lack of s*x drive…

🌥️ Does it really matter which one it is anyway? For me the approach to supporting symptoms is still the same – whether you have a peri-diagnosis or not!

👇My advice to you is...

🥰 Slow down, be kind to yourself and learn how to say ‘No’ to things you don’t have space or energy for. Do not feel guilty about putting yourself first.

🥗 Nourish yourself with nutritious REAL food & cut back on the processed stuff.

💦 Hydrate, move when you can & learn how to breathe properly.

Then see where you’re at!

🤔 Ever wondered how it works seeing a Nutritional Therapist?

🧐 Not many people know what a Nutritional Therapist really is, less alone how we work – I know I certainly didn’t when I started out.

🫐🧘🪴I like to describe it as a food & lifestyle doctor, using food, lifestyle interventions, supplements, herbs, functional testing and accountability alongside any medications to create a bespoke plan that supports your health concerns and goals. Exploring and supporting the root cause of your ill health and imbalances rather than focusing on the overflow of symptoms!

☝️👉 Swipe through the post to see the process we go through if you were to work with me so you can see what to expect...

☀️ Find out why you’ll find me mainly sitting in the sun this weekend 👇

☀️ Thank god the sun has come out. It’s felt a long time coming. This weekend I’m planning on being out in it as much as I can!

I love the sun - just sitting in it I can almost feel it powering me up like a battery.🪫

😮 No surprises then when I received my vitamin D test back this week that I was only just above critically low levels at 41! I thought something was up as my Raynauds Syndrome (rubbish circulation in my fingers) has been bad and I’ve been aching and creaking a lot plus struggling to get up in the mornings.

👙 But now I know, I’m making it a priority to get myself topped up. And whilst it’s unsafe to burn, it is essential to get your skin out to catch those rays… although I’ll save my bikini for when the builders have left 😉

🍄‍🟫 No amount of vitamin D rich food or the mushrooms sat on my windowsill have obviously made much of a difference to my levels, and I have a feeling I am genetically built to not convert it very well (although that’s another test on a long list I’m saving up for) 😉.

☀️ Are you topping up this weekend too?

Photos from Lift Nutrition and Wellness's post 01/05/2024

Mid-life and menopause can suck! 😳

💊 Our feeds are littered with magic menopause supplements and products promising to transform our lives – if only it was that simple...

🧬 They don‘t take into account individuality, genetics, explore how we fuel ourselves every day, and take into account stress, sleep and movement... then there’s the cost. No one single approach or product works for all of us.

💭I can understand working with a Nutritional Therapist can conjures up all sorts of pretty stereotypical images, so I thought it best to explain above what my promises are when you work with me one-to-one.

🫘 P.s. I also DON’T wear tie-dye, eat mung beans or have a picture-perfect kitchen, diet and lifestyle – although I‘ll forever be working on the latter bits!

🍫 Yes, I DO love chocolate, coffee and am partial to the odd gin and trip to Ibiza – but I also eat broccoli most days and embrace the 80:20 rule!
