And so the dice of life gets rolled again. At the grand old age of 54 you might or might not believe it, but I’ve never lived anywhere for longer than two years - ever. So the odds of me moving into somewhere that actually moves must be pretty low. But here we are , I am now a Man(c) with a van.
The above photo is now my new home.Having struggled to find a place to hang my mat for the last couple of months since moving back to Manchester it became inevitable, that a house of four wheels would be my destination, and in the words of the Fab Four I feel fine.
Movement has seemed to be a common thread throughout my life - all the moving around in my early years (and later too) and then chancing upon a yoga practice that doesn’t sit still. My mum often mentions that when I was a young kid I could never settle - have you got ants in your pants Matthew** she would say. I mention the word chanced above, as it really was a stroke of luck , or maybe fate or karma or whatever that the phone number I got handed when I was trying to find a cure for the anxiety disorder I struggled with , was for an Ashtanga Yoga teacher. I often wonder if it was any other type of yoga like Hatha or Iyengar or God forbid Hot Yoga ( just kidding hot yoga fans , don’t be so touchy!) would I have stuck at it. The movement of Ashtanga suited my personality.
Moving for me has become normal. In fact staying in one place for any length of time be it a place or a yoga posture then as me mum says I get ants in me pants.
But , well not so much as a but more of an addendum - as much as I have got the moving thing going on I also got lucky maybe 15 years ago when Amazon suggested if ‘I bought that book I might like this one’ - this one being a reader called Hardcore Zen ! I completely ignored the saying ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’ , as this one had a front cover of a cartoon Buddha with a mohican - I’ll have a bit of that action I thought and boom ten quid and 2 days later bobs yer mothers brother and I was now getting my zen freak on big time init !

I recently took part in a project for the incredible (Annie took all the fab photos 🙌🏽)
I just did my practice and Annie took a series of photos on a roll of black and white film she had - yes real film ! I will share some of the other photos over the next few weeks. There’s something ineffable about real film photos - timeless and beautiful.
I remember talking about the differences between Ashtanga and Iyengar Yoga , he said Ashtanga was like a movie and Iyengar a still photograph - both incredible and inspiring 🙌🏽

I have been asked a few times now about what ‘style’ of yoga is on offer - and my answer is always the same.
I liken us to the amazing where there is a set menu - ie you get what’s on offer ! My set menu is Yoga ! I don’t think we need to get caught up in the particular brand be it ashtanga or vinyasa or top vibz init stylz . I have been practicing and teaching now for the best part of 25 years - I don’t own a 200 hour or even a 500 hour TT certificate - what I do have is a quarter of a century’s worth of blood sweat and tears spent on the mat in various countries around the world including multiple trips to Mysore South India . The proof of the pudding is in the eating as the saying goes - come find out for yourself - your first class is on us .
I’m super excited to bring you news of my Hacienda Vinyasa Yoga charity event on Friday 26th May 6-8pm. Many moons ago as some you might know I used to be a DJ at the world famous Hacienda Nightclub (RIP), and I thought it would be fun ( and a bit of a challange to be honest !) to lead a Yoga class whilst DJing! Yes you heard that right I’ll teach a yoga class whilst I Dj - and this will be old school style using records and decks. All proceeds from the event will go to Christies.

As part of stress awareness campaign here is a simple but very effective breathing practice (Nadi Shodhana)
Nadi shodhana is a pranayama practice where the breath is consciously, physically regulated to enhance the flow of air through the nostrils as a method to balance the energy of the body and the mind.
With regular practice, alternate-nostril breathing can bring better balance to your nervous system and less stress response and activity over time. It lowers blood pressure. Deep breathing and alternate-nostril breathing slow your heartbeat and lower your blood pressure. It improves breathing.🙌🏽

Photo 3 Using the Vishnu Mudra hand position (the thumb is to close right nostril, index and middle fingers placed in towards the palm , ring and little fingers to close left nostril).

Photo 5 Close the left nostril (using ring and little fingers) take a deep breath in through right nostril.

A true Yoga practice is all about balance - the inhale and the exhale , the mind and the body , on the mat off the mat. As one teacher said ‘Never base your sense of self worth on how flexible you are’! has existed for the best part of 20 years - our aim has always been to have the journey of the individual student to be of paramount importance. As Mr.Weller once sang You’re the best thing that ever happened to me ! Happy Saturday y’all.

I was recently doing an interview and was asked what are my three top reasons why I do yoga - and I had to take a minute to process just what these would be - so I thought I would share them with you.
Top of the list was easy - as its the same reason many of us do yoga - simply it makes us feel great - both physically and more importantly mentally. Yoga is the complete mind body practice that allows us to build strength and flexibility in our bodies and a sense of peace and ease in the mind. So easy - it makes us feel ACE - it’s a no brainer, it doesn’t make any sense not to practice !
Second - well actually this should be first, and it’s the yoga community ie all the lovely folk who come to class. I’ve taught yoga all over the world including India and Europe and I’ve spent a good deal of time teaching in Venice Beach in L..A. and I’ve met some really incredible people along the way. This continues running the daily YogaMCR classes as we all get used to being back together practicing yoga in a studio (and not on bloody zoom) it’s good to see you :)
Last and by no means least why I love yoga is that I think its massively important for me , well for us all , to be able to take some time away from our phones and laptops and our busy lives to have some down time -some ‘me’ time and yoga is the perfect digital detox to spend some me time. It’s becoming more and more apparent that folks need to give a little more TLC to themselves otherwise we are gonna burn out pretty quickly. Yoga will prevent that from happening. Come do Yoga - because you are worth it !
