People get very hung up about change.
It is really hard to figure out what is going to happen because the future is hard to predict .
This book is different.
Rather than focusing on things that are going to change what about those things that never change.
While it seems everything is changing around us that is not true. Some things stay exact;y the same.
So what are they and how important are they??
It is well worth finding out.
I read Morgan's other book "The Psychology of Money" and that was a game changer. This is right up there.

I am a solver of issues. I used to believe that this was a positive attribute. Now, I am not so certain. What I failed to realize is that if you solve problems for others, they will become dependent on you and not develop their own autonomy. The secret is to be a leader who empowers their team to find solutions on their own by asking the right questions instead of constantly providing the answers.

This is my third encounter with Adam Grant's books, and each one has had a profound impact on my thinking. The main focus of this book is uncovering and nurturing hidden potential, and it highlights the distinguishing characteristics of those who possess it. The book contains inspiring stories of underdogs and serves as a reminder that overnight success is often an illusion. The author emphasizes that the key to success lies in the ability to learn continuously and the determination to persist. Prior to reading this book, I was unfamiliar with R.A. Dickey, but his story serves as a testament to the power of relentless learning and never giving up.

My first book recommendation of 2024.
Inspired by Michael Porter, this is the story of Proctor & Gamble and how they build and execute strategy.
Former P&G CEO AG Lafley and Rotman School Dean Roger Martin explain their framework that demystifies and simplifies the process of strategy development.
Build your strategy in 5 steps.
This is a great book to remind you of the basics of how to win in any market.

If you're considering starting your own "shop," there's a choice between buying an existing business or starting from scratch. While the traditional route is to start a business and build it up over time, it's important to note that many startups fail within the first few years.
Unless your idea is completely unique, buying a business can be a better option.
By purchasing an existing business, you already have an established customer base, staff, revenue, and infrastructure.
It's not an easy path, but it allows you to start with a running engine.
When Red Bull wanted to enter F1, they made a strategic move.

Business success is achieved by building a strong and talented team of individuals who are not only skilled but also aligned with the company's goals and values. Attracting and retaining such individuals is essential for a thriving business. By finding the right people, businesses can tap into their unique talents and perspectives, bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the table.
There is no better example than Red Bull F1.

Quality engineering is of course about engineering. That is obvious.
But its also about people.
Without the human element being right all we have is a bunch of machines with no one to run them.
There are 4 key areas to think about which make the difference and this was something else I talked about in my session at Red Bull F1.

04/12/2023

Some people think that we only make widgets.
I am not sure what they think a widget is but maybe that’s a discussion for another day.
What people forget when they demean our small engineering businesses is what our parts go into.
Without businesses like ours, British Manufacturing could not survive.
Here I am at Red Bull F1 talking about how important small engineering businesses are and what we really do.

01/12/2023

Formula 1 is a prime example of precision engineering, and the British excel in this field. With 7 out of the 10 teams being based in the UK, it's clear that British Engineering plays a crucial role in the success of Formula 1. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Red Bull F1 in Milton Keynes and share insights with an international group of entrepreneurs about the excellence of British Engineering. It was inspiring to witness the innovative spirit and technical expertise that goes into every aspect of Formula 1.

30/11/2023

In order to excel in your chosen field, it is crucial to go beyond simply being good. Striving to be better than your competitors is key to achieving success. Red Bull F1 serves as a prime example of this winning mentality, as they refuse to settle for anything less than first place. By constantly seeking an edge and maintaining their competitive spirit, they consistently come out on top.

29/11/2023

Success is not achieved overnight; it requires time, a relentless desire to improve, and the persistence to stay in the game. Red Bull F1 personifies this combination, showcasing the dedication and determination needed to succeed in the competitive world of Formula 1 racing. With their unwavering commitment to excellence, Red Bull F1 serves as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes and enthusiasts.

28/11/2023

Red Bull Formula 1 is a prime example of how a combination of potential, talent, persistence, and a relentless pursuit of excellence can lead to success. It's not just about hiring the best, but also about putting in the effort and staying persistent. Red Bull F1 embodies these qualities, constantly striving to be the best and continuously improving.

27/11/2023

Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Red Bull F1 team and engage in a meaningful conversation with a group of highly talented entrepreneurs. It was truly inspiring to see the passion and drive that these individuals possess.
Their passion was matched by the passion of Red Bull themselves.

I was reminded the other day that I do not always show gratitude to people who help me in one way or another. I feel it but obviously they dont know that.
Feeling gratitude has been shown to be really important to our mental well being and to our success in life.
But we also need to show gratitude.
So here goes.
This man has done more for me in business than anyone else. Without him I would not be where I am today.
He has given me praise, cut me down to size and given me knowledge and insight. He has also introduced me to countless others who have also helped me along the way.
Most recently he gave me the opportunity to visit Red Bull Racing and to speak on stage there to a group of international entrepreneurs and then have a back stage factory tour.
More about Red Bull to follow over the next few days but for now I just want to say thank you to JT Foxx and I am looking forward to seeing you next week at the Global Net Worth conference in New Jersey.

Out today on Amazon is Adam Coffey's third book.
The first two were excellent and the third is equally good.
For anyone wanting to grow their business and make it as good as it can be this is a must read.
Adam has done it himself several times over and next year will get his third exit of a business at over $1bn valuation.
He is not a guru. He is a practitioner and so has a very practical approach and real insight into the real world challenges of growing a business.
He also understands the world of Private Equity inside out and how to harness its power to help grow your business.
The kindle version is less than £1 on Amazon at the moment so get on there and buy it.

I have read a lot of Patrick Lencioni.
This book is a bit different. It is his take on a behavioural profiling system.
He comes at it from the angle of the work itself breaking down work into 6 elements and then figuring out which elements of work each of us is great at.
There is an excellent team profiling element to it so you can see who will fit together well and how to create a well-balanced team.
Like all of his books, it is well worth reading and the system is accessible and easy to deploy.

Anyone thinking about going into business should read “Surviving to Drive” by Guenther Steiner.
If you don’t know who Guenther is you have clearly been living under a rock or don’t have a Netflix subscription (which arguably amount to the same).
Guenther is the team principal of Haas F1, the smallest and newest F1 team.
He has raised swearing to an art form and invented new versions of some swear words as well.
But that is only for show.
What he is really about is resilience.
You don’t have to be the best to stay in business and do well. What you have to do is survive.
Guenther’s ability to deal with setbacks and move forward is unbelievable.
He is still there.
The team is still there.
He is relentless and is a true inspiration to anyone who feels they are up against is right now.

I have just read “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel.
It has an interesting view on the contrast between being rich and being wealthy.
People who are rich will show you how rich they are. Cars, houses, clothes, jewellery are all indicators of how rich someone wants you to think they are.
Wealth on the other hand is hidden. People become wealthy because of the things they choose not to buy. The money they choose not to spend but rather to save.
According to Housel the ability to do what you want, where you want , with who you want for as long as you want is the true measure of your wealth.

I am claiming this as GOAT number 4.
My friend Eugene and I meeting John McEnroe at Wimbledon. It was great to meet him, support his charity and watch him on court at close quarters.
He may have slowed with age but he still has the amazing touch with the racquet and still wants to get it right.
John won a total of 155 ATP titles, 77 in ATP Tour singles, 77 in men's doubles, and 1 in mixed doubles. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles and 25 singles titles on the ATP Champions tour. He also won a record eight year end championship titles overall, the Masters championships three times, and the WCT Finals, a record five times. His career singles match record was 875–198 (81.55%). He posted the best single-season match record (for a male player) in the Open Era with win–loss record: 82–3 (96.5%) set in 1984. I would say that qualifies as greatest off all time status.

Forgiato Blow is interesting on two levels.
He was someone who had built a big social media following for his rap music but was not converting that into financial success. So he found a business mentor and turned that around.
Musically he found a niche which seems unlikely to us Brits but in America there is a big market. He has just had a Number 1 hit on ITunes.
Politically he and I are significantly different but it was impossible not to admire this intelligent eloquent man for the way he has built his career by seeking out good advice and then following it.

For those of us who think the robots are about to take over here is a delivery robot in downtown Austin trying to work out how to get past a bollard.
I couldn’t work out whether the guy on the scooter was a minder or just a robot stalker.
Either way I think humanity is safe for now.

Day 2 and 3 of the wealth workout have been focused on focus.
Billionaires have the same amount of time as the rest of us. They are successful because they are better at how they spend it and what they focus on.
The key is to manage your energy and focus on things and people that matter.
Interesting thought from Billionaire Fred. If you focus your time and energy on building great relationships then you don’t have to worry about strategy because the strategy you need will emerge.
Spending your time and energy on building great relationships seems to be the key.

Honest successful athletes always credit their coaches for their role in achieving or accelerating their success. As business people we should do the same.
The other thing successful athletes and performers do is practice. Every day they train.
So why do business people not practice?
If we want I get better the short answer is we need to.
I am spending the next 90 days doing a Wealth Workout. 30 days of different exercises repeated 3 times.
Started yesterday.
The focus was simplify your life and your business.
Then work out how to do it but more importantly understand why you need to do it.
Thank you to my coach JT Foxx for creating the programme and for helping me to get where I am.

If anyone wants to find out more the programme is here. buff.ly/3XhnIci.

I love reading and hearing the stories of successful businesses, especially when written or narrated by their founders.
I have watched the success of Lululemon since I started yoga about 8 years ago.
I decided to get this book by its founder Chip Wilson and got more than I bargained for.
This is a searingly honest and raw story of the journey of an entrepreneur who builds and sells his first business and uses the money to start a business that will change the world.
The early days of Lululemon were tough, followed by exponential growth and massive success. But mistakes that Chip made cost him control of the company and forced him to watch it being corrupted.
He is forthright about what happened and who did what to who and it wouldn't surprise me if the writs are flying already.
Chip is a multi billionaire but Lululemon never achieved anything near its potential. It is well worth getting this audio book to find out why he thinks that is so.
