Wollerton Old Hall Garden
Wollerton Old Hall Garden is an example of horticultural excellence set in the heart of the Shropshire countryside.
The garden has been designed and developed by Lesley and John Jenkins since 1984. It is set around a 16th Century Hall and has developed into an important modern garden in the English Garden tradition with echoes of Arts and Crafts. It covers 4 acres, is intensely cultivated and depending upon plant interest, visits can take between 2 and 4 hours. The garden is now open until the end of September on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays; Thursdays and Fridays only in September, from 11am to 5pm.
The display tubs are coming on quite well. The tulips were removed in second week in May and apart from the travelling hydrangea ‘ Limelight’,were potted up with our rooted cuttings. These were Lavandula dentata , salvias cacaliifolia and ‘Mystic Spires’ and heliotrope ‘Dame Alice de Hales’.If any space appears , then first reserve will be the silver Plectranthus.
The new oak from 3/23 is weathering in nicely.
Lots of beautiful Wollerton plants on their way to new homes! Many of our plants are propagated on site from plants in the garden. We primarily propagate by cuttings, division and seed collection. We are more than happy to advise where our plants would be happiest in your garden and how to keep them healthy and growing on. The gardens are open to the public Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays (leaving other days open for visiting groups) The tearoom is also open on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Why not come and be inspired and take home a new treasure for your garden!
We were told years ago that there were 2 plants that could never be overwatered; roses and clematis! Hence a good year for the latter and the best here at the moment is Hagelby Pink.

Time to cut the Yews in the Yew Walk! Couldn’t have got it all done today without Charlie’s newly honed skills and Ruth. Ruth works in the ticket office and also volunteers in the garden, she has been absolutely invaluable today clearing up behind us so we’re ready to greet visiting groups tomorrow. Big thanks to Charlie and Ruth
Charlie has done the most amazing job of creating some new willow edging in the Courtyard garden. A brand new skill for Charlie and something he never knew he could do! It always a little frustrating working with natural materials but he overcame all the little problems to create this effective edging. These willow rods have been steamed to bring out the tannins and create a darker colour. They were then soaked in water for three days to make them more pliable before being woven. This simple but effective edging really compliments the style of the house, the Courtyard garden and the simple planting of Wollerton Old Hall rose.
We are now open Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Bank Holidays through the summer. So come and be inspired!
The planting in the newly designed Well Garden continues! The white lavenders mirror the Dahlia Aspire Marie in the opposite bed, both planted centrally with Clematis ‘Forever Friends’. Big thank you to the designer Pip Smith for dropping off the Lavenders and grasses early this morning!! .design
Please note, normal admission prices apply but the tour is free. See you there!!

The Croft has been closed for a little while due to the weather and needing a bit of a tidy. There’s still a bit of work to do, but this much more informal area of the garden leading down from the Croft Garden will be open again this weekend. Charlie, our gardener, has put in lots of hard work, marking out paths, barrowing woodchip and clearing. He has also worked hard to research the plants we have started to plant out so he’s making sure it’s ’right plant, right place’!
We’ve got a bank holiday on the horizon!! Wollerton Old Hall Garden is open on Bank Holidays as well as Fridays and Sundays. From June we’re open an extra day in the week too. Lots of opportunities to come and visit!!
