We're looking for a social media coordinator - can you help? (and please share!) ๐
Safe Anchor Trust is looking for a social media coordinator who can use their expertise to help us run our social media channels.
We're a (30 year old) charity that provides access to the waterways for disadvantaged groups and we have a volunteer base of over 150 people and growing.
All our volunteers are unpaid, from all walks of life and provide a service that carries over 8000 passengers each year.
We use social media at the moment but we need to grow this and embrace new platforms and channels. It's how we reach our audience and we need to step our game up. We're looking for someone who can help us do this.
This is a voluntary role that is entirely flexible (and remote) and will suit anyone who has a good working knowledge of social media, how best to use it and is looking to carry out some charitable work.
It would REALLY suit someone who works in social media as a full-time job and can share some of their skills and expertise with us when they have time outside of work.
We'll work around you - there's no expectation of a certain number of hours here or this much work etc. - all of our volunteers give what time they can around their other commitments.
Here's what you would be doing:
- Managing our Facebook posts and using them to attract new followers
- Posting details about our public events we host
- Ad-hoc posting of scheduled trip photos
- Showing us how to embrace new platforms (we're looking at you Instagram and TikTok!) to reach a wider audience
- Liaising with our recruitment team to post details of our open evening and inductions as and when necessary
- Teaching others how to get the best out of social media and how to best use our channels
You'll be an excellent writer, know how to write engaging posts and you'll be left to get on with the task - there's no overlording or bossing around.
At the same time, we'll make sure you can get help from any of our Management Team (who are, again, all volunteers) and ensure you're up to speed with what we do and why we do it.
If this sounds interesting (or you know someone who may be interested) please send an email to [email protected] with the subject 'Social media coordinator' and one of our team will come back to you.
Please share away!

EVER FANCIED DRIVING A BOAT?
We're looking to recruit new volunteers at Safe Anchor Trust!
We're an award-winning boating charity based in Mirfield. Throughout the year we provide access to the canals and rivers of West Yorkshire for disadvantaged groups. We carry almost 8000 passengers each year and provide a unique service in the local area.
We have over 150 volunteers that make it possible to provide our services all year round BUT we're looking to recruit more. Do you know someone? Or is it you?
WHAT DO BOATING VOLUNTEERS DO AT SAFE ANCHOR TRUST?
- Provide safe and memorable trips for our passengers
- Act as part of a crew (usually 3 or 4 per boat) to prepare and operate our boats on trips
- Assist with any activities required during a trip
- Close down boats, tidy up etc.
WHAT BOATS DO YOU HAVE?
- We have three passenger boats. Two broad beams (wide boats) and one narrowboat. You'll be operating and working on all three as part of our roster.
WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?
- Professional development. We'll train you from a brand new recruit through to a fully-qualified Helm
- Outdoors. We spend the vast majority of time in beautiful and peaceful surroundings
- Social. We've got 150 volunteers that share a love of boating and the outdoors
- Reward. Nobody gets paid but your reward is that you get to do something great for other people.
HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO COMMIT?
- As much or as little as you desire. Some volunteers volunteer three times each week. Some volunteer once a month. There's no rules and we're flexible. We have an online roster where you can see available trips and pop your name down to crew them.
WHEN DO YOU OPERATE?
- We operate 7 days a week between March and October. In summer we operate multiple trips per day. We also operate open weekends throughout the year and at Christmas.
DO I NEED ANY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE?
- No. We'll train you from scratch.
WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
- We'll need your personal details and to know what you're interested in doing at Safe Anchor. Then we'll carry out a few routine checks (including an enhanced DBS check as we work with vulnerable adults and children) and get you started in training. Someone will guide you through the whole process and make it seamless and enjoyable for you.

This is a massive shout out to everyone who attended our May Bank Holiday open weekend 25th to 27th May, visitors, volunteers and passengers.
We had sunshine and rain, we ran three boats an hour from 10am to 4.30pm each day and our cafe was open throughout.
None of this would have been possible without:
โ๏ธ 39 volunteers sorting everything from brewing to crewing
โ๏ธ 63 fully crewed boat trips
โ๏ธ Most importantly 556 passengers
๐ Thank you everyone for making it an awesome boating bank holiday weekend ๐ฌ
Shiver me timbers though - weโre already planning our next event which will be held Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July โ ๏ธ

Whoโs coming to our Open Weekend THIS weekend?
Say hello below if you are!
This weekend we were spoilt by the sun whilst we carried out Helm training for three crew members. ๐๐
We practice and then assess the following over two days to make sure that every volunteer is competent and safe in any situation:
๐ Pre-start engine checks
๐ Safety equipment on board
๐ How to leave (and come back to) a mooring
๐ How to get a boat on and off an embankment
๐ How to steer, reverse and stop
๐ How to run aground (get stuck) and how to get off again
๐ How to safely go through a lock, up and down
๐ How to deal with, and rescue, a man overboard
๐ How to deal with other onboard emergencies
The three crew members this weekend did a fantastic job and all now have their nationally-recognised Helm qualifications in hand.
What a weekend for it and congratulations new Helms!

THINGS WE GET ASKED ON OPEN WEEKENDS - PART 1 OF 3! ๐
Everything you always wanted to know about Safe Anchor Trust!
---
Q: How many boats do you have?
A: We have three passenger boats. Safe Anchor Lady, E Austen Johnson and Lady Victoria (known to us as SAL, EAJ and LV). We also have a 4th boat we use for environmental work, Lady Brenda.
---
Q: Are all of you unpaid?
A: Yes. Every single volunteer you see at Safe Anchor is unpaid. Whether on a boat, in the cafe or behind the scenes, everyone gives their time free of charge.
---
Q: Why do you do it?
A: If you've been on a trip you'll know why. We get to take people with all sorts of disadvantaged situations on relaxing and scenic trips and let them experience the calming effect of being on water and seeing beautiful sections of canal and river.
---
Q: When you "do your business" on a boat, where does it go?(someone had to ask it)
A: It collects in a waste tank below the cabin and is then pumped out by our team before a trip. Despite how it sounds, it's not that bad of a job!
---
Q: Who are you all?
A: We're volunteers of all ages, experiences and backgrounds. Some are new to boating (it might even be their first trip out) and others are boating veterans. At least one crew member on your boat is an RYA-qualified Helm at any time.
---
Q: What do you do when you're not doing open weekends?
A: Open weekends are only a small part of what we do. Between March and October we carry about 8000 passengers each year on trips from the Marina up to Brighouse, down to Castleford and back - and everywhere in between. We're out every day, seven days a week. Our aim is to provide access to the waterways for disadvantaged groups.
---
Q: Can I volunteer with you?
A: Yes! Send us a message.
---
Q: How long have you been going?
A: We've been established as a charity for almost 30 years.
---
Q: What can we see on trips out with you?
A: You may be lucky and see Kingfishers, Herons, ducks, geese, swans and other wildlife. Summer and Autumn are the best times to see everything in full swing.
---
Q: How did we not know about you?
A: ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Ready for another Bank Holiday Open Weekend? ๐คฉ
Our next open weekend is the Spring Bank Holiday weekend and will be:
- Saturday 25th May
- Sunday 26th May
- Monday 27th May
Pop it in your calendar for now.
We'll announce further details this weekend and explain exactly how it will all work.
We look forward to seeing more followers and friends!
๐
Have you been to see us this Bank Holiday weekend?
We would love to see some photos. Please add and tag away!
IMPORTANT NOTE ON NO SHOWS - PLEASE READ ๐ซค
Today was the first day of our Bank Holiday weekend trips and we've seen plenty of faces, both new and old. Thank you for coming to see us โบ๏ธ
However, we've also had about 30 no shows today. 30 no shows on one day is just under 20% of our capacity with two boats. ๐
We're a small charity that is 100% reliant on donations (every single volunteer you see is unpaid) and weekends like this one allow us to provide a very valuable boost to our revenues.
If we get a lot of no shows it means we miss out on being able to offer seats to other passengers (and there are hundreds of people waiting in the waiting lists for trips) and therefore miss out on being able to generate revenue to continue to support our operations.
Therefore, PLEASE, if you have a booking and can't make it, we ask that you cancel it and let someone else have a chance to book. You can cancel your booking yourself using the links in the email you received when you booked.
Thanks again for your support.
If you're booked for Sunday or Monday, we'll see you soon! โบ๏ธ
If you didn't manage to get a ticket, keep an eye on the booking system for cancellations and register in the wait list for a trip. If any tickets get cancelled you'll receive an email. โบ๏ธ
Reminder: more tickets going live TODAY at 4pm for this weekends boat trips.
Tickets go live at https://bookwhen.com/safeanchortrust at 4pm today.
All extra tickets are labelled as โNewโ.
Good luck!
Please only attend with a ticket - you cannot boat without one.
Can you help? Weโre looking for sponsors.
Safe Anchor Trust is an award-winning boating charity based in Mirfield. We provide access to the waterways for over 7000 disadvantaged people every year.
We rely on a crew of over 150 volunteers and operate between March and October primarily.
All of our volunteers are unpaid and we rely on donations and sponsorships.
Weโre looking for a new handful of small local businesses that would be willing to sponsor Safe Anchor in return for employee benefits.
If you have a small team of people in your business and - as part of your workplace benefits - would like to allow them the opportunity to carry out charity work please get in touch with a message on here.
We have successfully worked with other small businesses on an ongoing basis to provide crewing opportunities on our boats for staff members.
Your team get the opportunity to crew boats and come out on beautiful trips with us, you fulfil your corporate and social responsibilities and we get to meet new crew members.
Virtually all employees who have volunteered with us in the past have loved it and the businesses involved have found it a great offer to reward staff with.
If youโre interested - or know someone who runs a small business who may be interested - please send us a message.
Thanks!
Here's something you probably didn't know.
We have an environmental team that are out working every week all year round.
Their role is to keep an eye on the canals, rivers, towpaths and surrounding areas that we boat near and help to keep them in good nick.
These photos here show just TWO days of work recently downstream on the canal between Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury.
Here's what the guys collected that had been dumped:
400 bottles
40 bin bags of rubbish
8 large tonne bags of rubbish
This volunteer team spend hours every single week:
- Clearing up litter
- Taking things out of the canal and river that shouldn't be in there
- Cutting back overgrown vegetation
- Repairing raised beds for plants
- Planting bulbs and seeds along the areas near the canal and river
- Weeding
- Generally making the waterways a nicer place to be around
If you want to join our environmental team, we always welcome new volunteers and provide full training and equipment.

** UPDATE: BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND BOAT TRIPS **
Our Bank Holiday weekend boat trips sold out in just a few minutes last week. We know lots of you were disappointed that you couldn't get on a trip and we're always sorry when that happens.
HOWEVER, we're adding an additional set of trips for Sunday 5th and Monday 6th. There will be plenty of new tickets added on both days. This will hopefully mean that those who couldn't get on can now take advantage of these new trips.
The new trips will be live from Saturday 4th May at 16:00 from our booking site at https://bookwhen.com/safeanchortrust
Again, you have to book first and you can't just turn up and boat.
There is a slight caveat, however! These trips are dependant on one of our boats coming back into service. We don't expect any major issues BUT if there was an issue these trips would not be released. We're crossing our fingers!
Set your alarm clock for Saturday at 4pm and come boating with us in our additional slots on Sunday and Monday!
Thanks again for your support.
