🐴🌾🚫 Positive tests for prohibited substances have had a big effect on equestrian sport from the grass roots up. Here are our top tips on how to manage feeding to make sure you don’t accidentally fall foul.
We have some top tips on avoiding prohibited substances from BETA member Silvermoor !
• First and foremost, buy forage, feed, or supplements with the green BETA NOPS logo on the packaging. The manufacturer has taken part in a scheme to reduce the risk of naturally occurring substances causing contamination.
• Buy your feed in sealed and correctly labelled bags.
• All reputable feed manufacturers will have batch numbers. Be sure to keep these. If any issues arise this could be invaluable in tracing the source.
• Keep only your horses' feed in the feed store. Do not store it with any other animal feed.
• Always make sure old feeds are used up before opening new feeds to reduce the risk of cross contamination.
• If you are feeding multiple horses avoid using the same stirrer to mix feeds.
• If you use medication be sure to thoroughly clean any mangers or feed buckets after use.
• Buy only good-quality forage from a reputable supplier. Your local farmer may produce great forage, but it is unlikely they will follow the same strict guidance that BETA NOPS accredited producers do, so there will be an increased risk.
