As we approach the final days of operating as Active Northumberland, 💙 we would like to say it has been an absolute privilege managing all of the county's main leisure centres over the last 9 years. 😊

⭐ Achieved 'Excellent' Quest assessment ratings at 3 of our centres - the UK's quality scheme for sport and leisure
⭐ Delivered a brand new website and an industry leading App
⭐ Delivery of 3-brand new state-of-the-art leisure centres in Ponteland, Berwick and Morpeth
⭐ Major renovation projects at Wentworth Leisure Centre, Blyth Sports Centre, Concordia Leisure Centre and Newbiggin Sports & Community Hub

Today on International Women's Day, we’re proud to be celebrating 🎉 our inspirational colleague Emily Douglas as part of the campaign.

Emily, a gym and fitness instructor at Willowburn Sports And Leisure Centre and Berwick Sports & Leisure Centre has achieved so much over the past year. She graduated 🎓 with a degree in Physical Activity, Exercise and Health and received a Dean’s Prize for the highest overall performance at her university 🙌

On top of her studies, Emily also worked in the gym twice a week at Berwick and Willowburn, helped out as a swim teacher, was a much-loved instructor for our M**s on the Move classes, whilst also studying towards a GP Referral qualification. 😮 👏

It’s not surprising that we’re delighted to now have Emily as a full-time Gym Instructor at Berwick and Willowburn, as well as teaching swimming and fitness classes too. Emily continues to deliver excellence, inspire and be an all-round great colleague who is always on the go! 🌟

This International Women's Day we are celebrating 🎉 inspirational women. Meet Ebony, Jenny and Tracy, 3 women who are making great strides in the world of women’s football ⚽

⭐ Jenny is the driving force behind the success of the Berwick Rangers Women’s Football Club whose games now draw as many spectators as the men’s matches, underscoring the growing enthusiasm for women’s football and the move towards equality in the game 🙌

⭐ Tracy teaches Yoga on a Monday night and is a lecturer in Sports and Exercise Psychology at Newcastle University. Tracy’s mission was to improve access to football ⚽ for girls and she assisted in developing the Wild Cats football programme which attracts approx. 50 girls aged 5-15 years old. The Wildcats won the esteemed Northumberland FA Grassroots Football Project of the Year after just 18 months of operation 👏

⭐ Ebony is an apprentice at Berwick Sports & Leisure Centre and her path exemplifies the growth of women’s football ⚽ At 12 years old she was scouted for Hibs Girls football team - an impressive feat since there was an absence of local girl’s teams. Ebony is one of the youngest on the BRWFC team which has allowed her to finally play locally as well as coach Berwick Rangers Juniors 🙌

🌟 Ebony, Jenny & Tracy 🌟 we are immensely proud to have you as part of our Active team, 💙 three proud advocates of women’s football ⚽ showcasing the enormous contribution women bring to the sport. Keep up the great work empowering women in football – you are amazing!

Here’s another of our amazing inspirational stories we’re proud to share with you this International Women’s Day 💖 Alison Jarvis, one of our customers at Willowburn Sports And Leisure Centre sadly lost her son Josh in a road accident when he was cycling to university in 2014.

Alison doesn’t want any other families to experience the loss they have gone through as a family. As it’s Alison’s 60th Year, she has decided to support Road Peace, a charity that helps keep roads safe for all road users, by swimming 🏊 60 miles accompanied by her friend Lesley 🙌

This is the equivalent of 3,840 lengths or swimming the English Chanel 3 times, 😮 go ladies! 👏 ⭐

Alison and Lesley will be mainly getting their miles and lengths in at Willowburn Sports and Leisure centre but will also brave the North Sea 🌊 to get in some extra miles too 😍

We wish you all the best Alison and Lesley – A truly inspirational story displaying such strength through adversity 💖

Wow what an incredible achievement by the Willowburn Sports And Leisure Centre early morning swimmers 🙌

Well done to everyone involved in the challenge and for raising awareness and money for a very worth cause 🫶

This fantastic bunch of regular early morning swimmers created an epic challenge for themselves in February to swim over 600km between them! By the end of the month the group actually managed to swim 800km's! Which is an absolutely incredible feat! It is the equivalent of swimming from Alnwick to Norway!

The motivation behind this epic swim was to support Simon and his wife Frances who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2023. The group are raising awareness for Ovacome an Ovarian Cancer Charity by completing 3 challenges this year!
