Ouch! 🛑 Gracilis ( Groin ) injury identified on palpation.
The main function of these muscles is to adduct, or to pull the limb toward the midline. During normal forward motion, these muscles counteract the lateral hip and thigh muscles and pull the swinging limb toward the midline to maintain balance.

The groin is defined as the area where the upper thigh and the medial pelvis meet. Since the groin muscles are damaged chronic or acute they are in spasm, excessive inward movement of the limb occurs, resulting in slowing on the advancement phase of the stride and shortening of the crossover step when turning.

Treatment: Rest, Ice, Physiotherapy of controlled ROM application, secondary areas and originated areas addressed and treated. Red light Laser Therapy on the injured area.

The hocks are a key part of your horse’s hind-end driving mechanism. Actions such as jumping and work at collected gaits, which call for extra hind-end effort, are especially tough on these hard-working joints.

The hock links the bones of the lower leg (the cannon bone and the two splint bones alongside) to the tibia, in the upper leg? but it’s not a simple joint. It’s a complicated assembly of half a dozen bones, built to absorb shock, flex when the horse brings his hind legs under his body, and extend to propel him forward.

Problems in the hock joints tend to creep up gradually, and early signs can be subtle:

Your horse may have an on-again off-again lameness, with or without noticeable heat or swelling.
He may start out stiff but seem to “work out of it” as he warms up.
He may resist going downhill or backing off the trailer.
Muscles in his lower back may be sore from working overtime in an effort to spare his hocks.

Within joints, injury or simple wear and tear can set off a destructive chain of events. The inner membrane of the joint, which produces the viscous fluid that fills the joint, becomes inflamed. The fluid, which lubricates the cartilage surfaces, becomes thin and watery. Cartilage is squeezed and starts to wear away, and lumps of new bone growth appear where bones are irritated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SURVIVOR 🐎 🎈

This is the ‘short’ story of ‘Juno’, my precious dysmature foal. 😔 💔 He was smaller than my Labrador when he arrived in the very early hours of June, 2022. More worrying was the fact that Juno struggled to stand and suckle for hours following his birth; longer than is usual for a new-born foal. Juno received round-the-clock care by & wedidn’t leave his stable.

2 weeks passed and as an Animal Physiotherapist I could see he was uncomfortable behind. I hadn’t seen him trot, buck, or be the happy bouncing bunny one expects or dreams a new born foal will be. His feet were like balls and his joints were spongy, and his hind heels were like jelly.

X-rays were taken but Juno didn’t have much chance of being a sound horse. It was confirmed, there was no ossification of the cuboidal bones located in the carpus (Knee) and tarsal ( Hocks) and flexor tendon laxity. At this moment he had a reduced athletic future, field ornament, a soundness issue and potential development of arthritis.

Emotional 😢 I made the decision to go on a journey and stick with him and see where we ended up. The decision was made to keep him in a small deep bedded stable, ‘wait’ and ‘hope’ that his X-rays every month would be positive.

As I am a Qualified Animal Physiotherapist I was able to apply gentle massage / stretching to his forelimbs as they were compensating from off loading the hinds.

Going forward: Following 3 months stable rest, we took X-rays; his bones were potentially at ‘peak’ growth. He was learning to eat independently and soon started to buck and kick as I was mucking out around him, 😅 in my opinion, this felt like progress.

My brilliant farrier’ Will suggested we applied plastic extensions to his hind feet to lower the toe and raise the fetlock. They were reapplied and he was allowed controlled handling of 10 minutes in the field. Three weeks later the farrier visited. Will suggested longer metal extensions which were then applied.
2 weeks later, He had become much stronger and he was correctly elevated at the pasterns.

we not only kept him living, we turned a dysmature foal into a happy 2YEAROLD!!.

Therapeutic wavelengths of Laser Therapy, you can stimulate activity on a cellular level. Not only can this reduce pain in the area, but it can also accelerate tissue repair to help you heal faster.

Tendon injuries are time-consuming and frustrating and an all too common occurrence in the athletic horse. With huge forces being placed on these long, strap-like elastic structures that attach the muscles to the bones in the limbs, it is no wonder that they are susceptible to damage during exercise. Once damage has occurred to tendons, healing can take anything from 3 to 12 months and in some cases the horse may never return to its previous level of activity. Early diagnosis and treatment is imperative to achieve as favourable an outcome as possible. With the likes of intense Laser therapy as a treatment option, reducing inflammation and swelling in the short term and improving return to full function with stronger healing in the long term.

Gorgeous 15.1 lightly backed in ‘23 - 4yro Bay (4Whitesocks & a blaze ) gelding for Loan.
*Has been backed and ridden away lightly and thoroughly enjoyed it last year.
