Yep…
A spine tingling evening. The words that rush to mind when I try to encapsulate the essence of our Older Voices event on the 31 March.
We put out the call to gather to celebrate, enjoy and capture a modicum of the wealth of rich story telling and artistry held in the hearts and minds of the older generations of our community. The result; yarns, stories, poems and songs that moved us in so many ways... Whether doubled up in laughter, clapping with pride or silent in reflection we were constantly in awe.
Off a busy main road, Down a little side street, In a cosy cafe hub, With seagulls crying, engines humming busy Friday evening life burbled on outside but inside... Inside the warm cosy environs of 2 Savoy Lane, time paused, rewound and all were still, hanging on every word spoken.
The range of talent, diversity of content and variety of delivery was enchanting.
For some it was their first time to share in such a public forum and although at first very hesitant and feeling incapable, they were buoyed by the warm support and eager and inspired to share. And share they did! not only surprising the audience but most importantly themselves. The natural story telling ability finally unveiled, the flood gates opened and the stories flowed beautifully.
With coffee, cakes and chatter, it wasn’t long before we all felt like old friends and something of a life in simpler times felt very present.
CSP are hugely grateful to those who engaged and trusted us with their Treasure Trove. We are busy editing the recordings and can’t wait to share on our You Tube channel soon. We hope to collate these with many other works into a book thus capturing in all forms the words, memories, experiences that reflect the soul within.
We are so delighted with the feedback from the participants. It has been a delight and privilege for us.
Our warmest appreciation to our hosts ADHD HUB, no doubt we shall see you soon.

CASTLEWELLAN STUDIO PLAYERS NEEDS YOU!
Castlewellan Studio Players are very excited to involve members from local & neighbouring communities in our latest project called ‘Older Voices.’
We invite people over 50 who would be interested in having a story or poem of theirs recorded and published on our YouTube Page, our upcoming website and, at a later stage, included in a book.
The story could be fictional, self-penned, or just something you remember from your younger days. It can be done as just a vocal recording or a video recording. It may take the form of a poem, story, or folklore that you know from former years or that was passed onto you. It could even include some local history and be *in any language*. A small anecdote, even a story from your life, that you would love others to hear.
The idea behind this project is to capture the rich and varied older voices of our communities so they can be heard and enjoyed by everyone, not just now but in the future.
We wish to capture as great a variety of works, heritage, local history and folkore of all formats. With a culture so rich in spoken word, it's an exciting journey we are embracing and we hope to engage with as diverse a populous as we can, both in those taking part and those who wish to listen.
The next recordings will take place at the ADHD Hub, Savoy Lane, Newcastle on Friday 31st March from 5:30pm. Refreshments will be provided. *PLACES ARE LIMITED AND MUST BE PRE-BOOKED.. NO DROP INS*
If you would like to take part in the ‘Older Voices’ project, please contact us at [email protected].

Little Hills brought home to Rathfriland
RATHFRILAND’s own Dr John Shannon’s new play ‘Little Hills’ will bring the market town’s history to life in a special performance this weekend.
The three-man (or two-man, one-woman) play, starring Sinead McAleavey, Bronagh Lynch, Sean O Baoill, John Shannon and Caleb Shannon, looks at the life of Catherine O’Hare, who left Rathfriland in 1850, aged 16, to become a housemaid in Boston.
Little Hills brings the audience on a grand adventure with Catherine, with all its highs and lows, as she goes on to become the first woman to cross the Rockies in the goldrush of the 1858. Not only that, she had three small children with her! And she was pregnant! She gave birth in the wilderness, assisted by First Nations women, and is today a celebrated figure in Canadian history and folklore.
The play was written as part of an ongoing Public Records Office project on focusing on women in the area, which also involved local organisations Rathfriland Regeneration Group and Drumgath Ladies group.
PLEASE SHARE.

Hey folks,
CSP(Castlewellan Studio Players theatre group) are asking if anyone you know over 50 that would be interested in having a story or poem of theirs (self penned or that they know from younger days) recorded and put on YouTube (it will be just a vocal recording or can be video and vocal if preferred). The story doesn’t need to be fictional, it could be a funny story about something that happened to them, or just a story from their life that they would like others to hear.
It may take the form of a poem or story or folklore they know from former years or was passed onto them, can be a bit of local history, knowledge anything at all really. It can be in any language. If you know of anyone who would like to take part in this, please let me know we'd be delighted to engage. If you could share and spread the word to others that would be class.
The idea is to engage uplift and connect With as many of our community as possible both in the folk that take part and the listeners, and keep our heritage/stories we grew up with or just lovely memories, anecdotes and favourite tales and memories alive. ♥️🎭
Thanks
CSP

Join Chris this week in conversation with Killyleagh's Conal Montgomery and Duxy Leahy on The Chris Scott Radio Show, FM 105 Down Community Radio on Wednesday evening – 3rd November 2021 (7 - 8pm).
Conal, a talented singer, musician and songwriter, has recently returned to the recording studio, and recorded a brand new song - "My Confession." The song wasn't all Conal's creation though. The words had been penned in prose format several years ago by local artist Duxy Leahy. You can listen to the guys talking to Chris about how a poem was turned into song by tuning in on Wednesday evening. "My Confession", released on all the usual platforms on 29th October, 2021, will also be played on the programme.
And this week the Castlewellan Studio Players return to the airwaves with Series 2 of The Adventures of Jonathan No Middle Name Jackson!! In this series there are 6 episodes, written for radio by Anthony McFadden and performed by members of the Players.
In episode one we hear the cast realigning themselves for the new series. What will happen? In the last episode of Series 1 the characters Jonathan, Samantha and Donna were left in a caravan at Glastonbury Fair in 1971 with a pair of size 12 special boots required for further adventures!! Great to have so much local talent feature on local radio!
