Manual therapy is a hands-on technique used by physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals to alleviate pain and improve musculoskeletal function. It involves the skilled manipulation, mobilisation, and massage of the body's soft tissues and joints. By applying specific pressures and movements, practitioners aim to reduce tension, enhance mobility, and restore normal movement patterns. Manual therapy can be effective for treating various conditions, including back pain, neck pain, and joint stiffness, promoting overall physical well-being and aiding in the recovery process.
Some examples of Manual Therapy
- Soft Tissue Mobilisation: This technique involves massaging and manipulating the muscles and connective tissues to reduce tension, improve circulation, and enhance tissue flexibility. It's commonly used for conditions like muscle strains and tendonopathies.
- Joint Mobilisation: Practitioners apply controlled movements to joints to restore normal motion. This technique is often used for treating joint stiffness and pain, such as in the case of osteoarthritis or frozen shoulder.
Myofascial Release: By applying gentle, sustained pressure to the myofascial connective tissue, this technique aims to relieve pain and increase range of motion. It's particularly beneficial for conditions like chronic pain and fibromyalgia.
Trigger Point Therapy: This involves applying direct pressure to specific points within a muscle that are causing pain and tightness. It's effective for treating conditions like tension headaches and chronic muscle pain.
Myofascial Cupping: Using cups to create suction on the skin, this technique helps to lift and separate soft tissues, improving blood flow and promoting healing. It's often used to treat muscle tightness and chronic pain.
A fragility fracture is a type of bone fracture that occurs from a low-energy trauma, such as a fall from standing height or less.
These fractures typically happen because the bones have been weakened by osteoporosis or other conditions that compromise bone strength and density.

After life-altering spinal surgery my wife Joanne, was left with severe limitations in sensation and mobility of her legs. It made an incredibly active person into someone who couldn't get out of a chair or climb the stairs.
Yesterday we climbed Bickerton Hill as part of our training to climb Snowdon. Joanne has been receiving care from the Walton Centre NHS Trust ever since and is now giving back for all the incredible work they do in neurology and neurosurgery. Below is a link to our charity page.

It's the first prep day for ! Mia has been struggling with chronic scapular pain for years now and to set her up for the best prep possible we've done some soft tissue massage and some dry cupping. While this doesn't get to the heart of the problem, we'll be working together to manage the pain and to look fantastic on the stage!
