What do you see in the hedge ? ๐Ÿ‘€

More from our awesome workshop this week weaving the radical history of the Otmoor riots into a collective reimagining of human-nature relationships, epitomised in the thick-seeming-but-gap-riddled hedge.

โœจ Reclaim these unwitting agents of severance for radical connection โœจ

What do you see in the hedge ?

Experiments for our workshop TOMORROW โ€ผ๏ธ

16/10/2023

A laid blackthorn hedge at Otmoor.

In the 1830s, hedgerows like this were repeatedly torn up by hundreds of local people to resist their rights of common being taken away from them. The fluid, open space, where folks shared and negotiated rights to graze cattle and catch geese, was being drained and blocked in by fences and hedges.

But was the hedge to blame?

It's an odd question, right ?
But seeing the human in the hedge means we, now, can see them differently.

Close your eyes.
Uproot the barrier used for separation, severance, privatisation.

Open your eyes.
Perhaps you'll find a ragged membrane,
full of gaps, creatures and light.

And if you can do it with hedges...
what else might you be able to see differently?

What spaces might open up?
Where might fill with friends and food?

Come along to our workshop THIS WEDNESDAY to learn more about the Otmoor Riots from local historian Ciaran Walsh and practice seeing things differently ๐Ÿ‘€

See you there

๐ŸŒžTHE NATURE OF BOUNDARIES๐ŸŒž

๐ŸŒณ14th April for Marmalade Festival ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ’ซ 9am : THE WORKSHOP ๐Ÿ’ซ

In this immersive physical theatre workshop, you will be led through a series of activities that will guide you in developing a unique hedgey character whilst at the same time forming a collective, living hedge with the other workshop participants. Different elements will accumulate as the day progresses, until we've thoroughly tangled up with one another into a wild dancing, singing hedge. At this point we will then focus in and sculpt a short sequence to be performed at the end of the screening of Enclosure.

No prior experience is necessary to take part in the workshop, which will have a relaxed atmosphere that people can tap in and out of, although we would like people to commit to being there for the whole day. During the day there will also be crafting, dreaming and reading corners for workshop participants to nest in away from the main hedge action.

Workshop participants will be emailed the Enclosure film by the start of the week, so why not... SIGN UP NOW!

THE NATURE OF BOUNDARIES

On Friday 14th April, Mostly Moss Productions joins Marmalade Festival for a day-long exploration into the nature of boundaries.

From 9am to 5pm, for a limited number of participants, the hedge will be your home. But first weโ€™ve got to make it. At Fusion Arts Gallery, Gloucester Green, weโ€™ll engage in a collaborative morning of play-making activities, games and exercises guiding us all to becoming a living, breathing hedgerow. Weโ€™ll then reflect on whatโ€™s germinated in our tangled ramblings, and co-create a short piece for performance at the end of the day.

From 3pm โ€“ 5pm, we will be having a subtitled screening of Enclosure, OPEN TO ALL. From out of the screen the roots of a hedge will reach into our midst and we will experience the live performance devised that day.

Meet Finn Carter, playing Ed, a young Oxford-born actor, fresh out of drama school. Enclosure is his first full-scale production since finishing his training. In his opinion, Ed is as much a reflection of himself as he is anything else. โ€œIโ€™m not a biology student and have always found myself holding nature slightly at armโ€™s length, so itโ€™s been a wonderful opportunity to find myself connecting with the outside world, just as Ed himself does.โ€ ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ Check out our bio for the link to tickets

Ticket Drop!! ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Wolves, bison, wild horses, wild boar all used to roam the UK. Humans drove them extinct. The space they left behind was filled by the commoners gathering firewood and grazing cattle. Now weekly conservation volunteers clear scrub to preserve our meadows, fens and heathlands. So what happens when the animals come back?

Enclosure is an original play by Mostly Moss Productions that dives head first into these tangled ecologies that span centuries and species, age, class, and nationality, asking what does โ€˜placeโ€™ mean in the 21st Century? What is wildness?

Enclosure is an original play written by Jamie Walker and produced by Mostly Moss Productions.

Staging a play outside brings some difficulties. Whether it is preparing for the weather or making sure that sound and lighting will function properly, thereโ€™s a lot of work to be done! So, the cast and crew are continuing to rehearse in outdoor spaces around Oxford to truly experience what an outdoor play will throw at them. Pictured here are Cass and Finn rehearsing in Meadow Lane Park. We canโ€™t wait for you all to see the final results ๐Ÿ’š
