NCT Birth, Feeding and You

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Health Visiting and School Nursing Service team is made up of a variety of NHS staff with specific training and qualifications to support the health needs of children, young people and families in the community. In our teams we have Administrators, Assistant Practitioners, Health Visitors, Nursery Nurses, School Nurses, Staff Nurses, Students and Vision Screeners. Together we are able to offer a wide range of help, advice and support for children and young people aged 0-19 years old.

A reminder that due to the Barnardo's summer event taking place today at the children's centre there is no chill & chat group today in March.

In the past 5 months, 26 families have been supported in giving breast milk to their baby using one of our breast pumps.

A referral for this service can come from a health professional such as a midwife or health visitor or parents can self-refer. The form for referral is here: https://forms.office.com/e/maceKpSmv9 or alternatively please send us a message if you have any questions.

There are walk in vaccination clinics across Peterborough this summer holidays, you don't need to book just pop along on the indicated day/time that works best for you.

Please note that due to a Barnardo's summer event there is no group at March on Wednesday this week.

If you normally attend our groups with a 0-4 year old and also have school age children, you are welcome to bring them to the group with you. A gentle reminder that your children remain your responsibility during our groups. The activities we have available are suitable for up to pre-school age so you may want to bring a quiet activity for them to occupy themselves if you wish. (Please note this applies to the groups that we are hosting, for other groups we attend run by other organisations, please check with them on their individual policies.)

Have you been inspired by World Breastfeeding Week to find out how you can support local families? Our NCT trained peer supporters support local parents, however they decide to feed their babies. We offer telephone support, group support, 121 support and support on the post-natal wards and Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Today marks the end of World Breastfeeding Week 2024.

We would like that thank all our families who have taken part in our events this week, the breastfeeding parents, the Mums who pump, the families who tube feed, the parents and guardians giving their children formula milk, donated human milk or a combination of formula and breast milk, the grandparents, family, friends and partners who support the feeding parents and our peer supporters who volunteer their time to support all local families.

Thank you to the local health professionals and organisations who have joined us this week and who we work with all year to support parents.

While we are not qualified to diagnose a tongue tie we are trained to assess tongue function and can refer onwards for further assessment where needed.

We are shocked and saddened by the events that have been taking place around the UK.

As pockets of disorder continue, our priority remains the safety and well-being of the new and expectant parents we support, our NCT staff, practitioners and volunteers in local communities.

With this in mind, we have taken the decision to cancel the picnic planned for tomorrow, Wednesday 7th August in Central Park in Peterborough due to ongoing uncertainty about planned protests in the area.

We will be holding an online group on zoom to allow us to get together virtually, if you would like to join us please send a message to the page to receive a link.

Our first event for World Breastfeeding Week is coming this Friday, at Honeyhill Family Hub in Paston. Join us to share your experiences, chat to other local families and enjoy a light brunch.

All the stories we share this week are the real life experiences of local families. No two experiences are the same. The thoughts, feelings and opinions shared are the individuals own.

This morning we will be in the Whittlesey Child & Family Zone from 9.45am as normal for those families from pregnancy to 1 year. Then instead of the usual session from 10.30am we will move to the green space behind St Mary's Church for a celebration picnic for World Breastfeeding Week. We will have drink and cake for you at the picnic but please feel free to bring a picnic lunch for your family...don't forget your blanket!

PLEASE NOTE - the indoor session from 9.45am is only for families with children under 1 (including pregnancy) or those needing peer support. If you have children over 1 please join us directly for the picnic. Any questions please feel free to message us 🙂
