If you’re struggling with your mental health, every day can feel like Friday the 13th.
While the rest of the world is seeing everything in technicolour, suffering with depression feels like the colours have drained away.

But it’s important to remember that there is always hope, even when everything around you is trying to convince you otherwise.

It’s always OK to reach out for help.

Suicidal feelings may stem from the belief that “I am in such a low place in my life that there’s no way I can climb out of this” and that’s when Hope begins to dwindle. We’re here to tell you that no matter how big of a hole you’ve found yourself in, you can and will climb out. With support and a little bit of hope, you can come back from anything. ***deprevention ***deawarenessmonth

Su***de is a subject that is painfully close to our hearts here at PoetsIN. Ahead of ***dePreventionDay, we want to highlight the life-changing ripple effect su***de has not only on the immediate family but beyond.

With almost 6,000 registered deaths by su***de in the UK, we’re now dealing with a pandemic that desperately needs more focus from the Government. And when you add the figures for attempted su***des into the mix, the numbers of people impacted by this topic are huge.

When someone takes their own life, they leave behind a trail of pain, loss and unanswered questions.

We wrote a blog last year that explored this topic, packed with useful information and advice that anybody affected by su***de will be able to relate to.

Happy World Charity Day!

Today marks and provides us with an opportunity to explain some of the challenges we face here at PoetsIN in our mission to help as many people struggling with their mental health as possible.

While some of the UK’s biggest charities spend up to 25% of their multi-million-pound annual budget on marketing alone, with senior members of staff paid salaries well in the six figures, PoetsIN is run by a skeleton team of committed people as well as volunteers.

It’s the donations from our supporters that allow us to do the work we do, and if we’re going to continue to grow and reach more people, we need your support.

So, on this World Charity Day, rather than automatically donating to one of the massive charitable organisations, remember those smaller charities that make the absolute most out of every penny we receive to ensure we’re helping as many people as possible.

The PoetsIN team spent a fantastic day at the Longueville Court Care Home last month alongside our friends from Azets UK.
Having chosen to volunteer with PoetsIN as part of the ESG commitment, the Azets team joined us at Longueville Court to spend the day with the residents. And what a day it was.

While we were there to provide residents with information to support their mental health and well-being, it’s fair to say we all came away from the day with more knowledge about life than we arrived with.

It was such a pleasure to speak to some incredible people who have lived fascinating lives. And we’d like to thank the team at Azets for their enthusiasm and commitment.

🌅 Don’t let the end-of-summer blues bring you down.

If the end of the summer is making you feel down, don’t worry – you're not alone.

While there are some parallels between end-of-summer blues and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), they aren’t the same. But just because one can be diagnosed and is therefore viewed as the more serious of the two, the end-of-summer blues are a very real thing and shouldn’t be dismissed.

As we enter September, remember to be kind to yourself and don’t feel under pressure to make any drastic changes just because the summer holidays are over.

⦁ Acknowledge your feelings and accept that they are valid
⦁ Look back at your summer memories
⦁ Begin planning for next summer and give yourself lots to look forward to
⦁ Start a new hobby or pick up an old one

The PoetsIN Facebook community is always here to provide you with a safe space to talk about your feelings. To get in touch, follow the link below:

😞 Trauma: 10 strategies to help you cope.

Trauma comes in many shapes and sizes, and not always in the form you’d expect.

While the word trauma may lead you to think of some of the horrific images we’ve recently seen from Ukraine, Gaza and beyond, it can often be brought about by seemingly smaller issues.

Trauma is defined by an event, or a series of events, that leads to an individual feeling overwhelmed by emotions that can affect both their physical and mental wellbeing. The impact of these events can often be underestimated at the time, with the effects only being felt until way later.

In this blog, we explore trauma and provide some useful strategies to cope with the feelings associated with it.

“It’s 3 am. While the world around her lies fast asleep, she’s wide awake; awake and utterly alone…”

Loneliness can affect people at different times and in a variety of ways. For people who have suffered or are suffering from loneliness, it can feel as though there isn’t anyone in the world who understands what they are going through.

This time of the year can really enhance these feelings, as our social media feeds are flooded with snapshots of happiness seemingly being enjoyed by everyone but you.

The truth is, 33% of the world population is currently experiencing loneliness, and it’s something most of us can relate to, even those without any other mental health concerns.

In this article, we look at what it means to be lonely and provide some expert tips on how to combat feelings of loneliness.

Help us, help you.

This year, PoetsIN is on target to have supported more than 6500 individuals with our Creative Mental Health programmes, our Creative Mentorship plans, bespoke Wellbeing in the Workplace packages, assemblies, webinars, wellbeing calls and more. And we’re only just getting started!

But if we’re going to reach our goal this year of helping more people than ever before, we need your help! We rely on donations as a charity, 85% of which goes directly to helping people.

And, did you know, businesses who make charitable donations can claim a tax relief and demonstrate their commitment to their ESG responsibilities?

On this , we want to shine a light on the mental health challenges faced by young people here in the UK and around the world.

A 2021 survey found that one in six young people in the UK aged between 5 and 16 had a probable mental health problem.

From school stresses to the pressures that come with social media, combined with the thousand other complicated feelings and thoughts that come with being young, it’s more important than ever that children feel supported and know that support is available.

We run a series of mental health workshops specifically designed for young people that we provide to schools, youth groups and other organisations. To learn more, follow the link below:

The history of ‘depression’

When speaking about mental health, how often do we use words and phrases without really knowing what they mean?

Take depression, for example. The word is now used as something of an umbrella term to cover a range of feelings, but what does it mean in a historical sense?

Depression isn’t new, but how long has the word been used and where does it come from?

🎈 Learning to let go of guilt

An often-underestimated aspect of struggling with poor mental health is the huge dash of guilt that comes along with it.

Missed an event because you felt you couldn’t leave the house?
Not checked in with your friends or family for a while?
Struggled with your sleep so overslept for an appointment?

There are so many ways in which having a mental illness can result in feeling guilty, all of it slowly adding up and weighing us down.

In this blog, our co-founder Sammie explains the importance of learning to let go of guilt.

Self-image can be a year-long battle for a lot of people. If you struggle with your appearance or body image, the summer can feel like a particularly challenging time.

A lot of people are uncomfortable with wearing clothing that shows a lot of skin, displays self-harm scarring, or has the potential to trigger body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

The most important thing to know is that you’re not alone. In fact, 60% of adults in the UK have felt a negative emotion about their body image, and 1 in 3 adults have been so stressed by a negative body image that they’ve felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.

But what can you do to deal with these feelings?
⦁ Avoid following social media accounts that might trigger negative self-image feelings
⦁ Model positive self-talk by treating yourself kindly
⦁ Don’t judge other people’s appearances – this will help you to treat yourself with compassion and without judgement
⦁ Be aware of the language you use with friends and family and the potential damage it could cause
⦁ Reach out if you’re really struggling

As ever, our Facebook community is always here to lend an ear.
