Last week our Wednesday and Thursday Summer School classes went on a trip to the Box Museum.

For some of our students it was their very first time and they really enjoyed their visit. One of them said, "I will definitely come back here with my family and friends over the summer".

We were also really pleased to hear about the Bloomberg Connect App, which allows you to download information about the Box in different languages, including Arabic, Nepalese and Ukrainian.

Last week Andy visited the South Hams District Council Ukrainian Open Day. He had a great time informing people who ODILS can help with employment mentoring, IELTS and the OET English course as well as English lessons and training to teach English.

Andy said it was an excellent way to connect with the Ukrainians in South Hams and a good opportunity for networking.

Last week Emma from Fotonow ran the first photography session with our ESOL students. This course is a great opportunity to practice English and learn photography skills. Our students had a great time learning to use the cameras and take good pictures in Freedom Park.

This course is running between 1:30-3:30pm on Tuesdays at ODILS (Greenbank site). It is FREE and open to everyone.

We are pleased to announce that the work has begun on the outside of our new building at Manor Street with the scaffolding going up.

Last weekend we were visited by Pradeep and Kavitha Manaktala from Blue Mountain Homes who have bought and are developing the building for ODILS, so that we can serve those who are isolated by language and culture in Plymouth.

Keep an eye out for future photos over the next few months.

Last week, Emma from Fotonow came to Odils to present some information to students about some photography sessions that Fotonow will be running at Odils throughout the summer.

It was really interesting to hear about the sessions, with many students expressing an interest in taking part.

These sessions will be on Tuesday afternoons 1:30-3:30pm. They are free and open to everyone.

We are proud to announce that Odils Learning Foundation are now delivering the Plymouth Resettlement Support Service in partnership with START, DCRS, Path & PDREC.

Plymouth Resettlement Support Service is for people who have come to Plymouth via dispersal or through relevant schemes to settle in the city. It’s a service to help them find stability, join its culture and to discover the opportunities that are open to them.

It is delivered by a partnership of organisations with long histories of, and strong commitments to, supporting refugees in Plymouth.

This partnership brings together various services to ensure support for people to enable them to make sense of, and settle into, their new environment. We aim to build links, bolster self-esteem and help people find belonging within the wider refugee community and help people access the wider community.

The partner agencies therefore work collaboratively to provide a wide range of support activities that enable individuals and families to:
· meet their aspirations
· feel a sense of belonging
· build on their assets, skills, and attributes,
so that they feel settled, regain their sense of identity, and can participate fully in society.

The service aims to:
· provide support to secure and maintain accommodation
· help people understand and exercise rights and entitlements living in the UK
· support individual self-sufficiency through developing employability skills, English language classes and setting up benefits
· address health outcomes

Path Devon

START - Students and Refugees Together Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council

Last week we had a fun end of term BBQ for our staff, volunteers and trustees. We had a fantastic celebration including live music from Christian Sleep, food from around the world and a disco in the garden.

It was so great to celebrate all that we have achieved as a charity this year and to thank everyone for their hard work throughout the year.

Last week Emma, one of the Employment Mentors on the new PRSS service (Plymouth Resettlement Service), accompanied clients Olga, Samah, and Nada to volunteer at a summer fair at a local primary school.

These three wonderful women used their creative talents to run the Face Painting and Glitter Tattoo stall. They met local families and teachers, made a lot of children very happy, and raised money to help the school. Their effort was very much appreciated, and a great time was enjoyed by all.

"We are delighted to introduce our new Teacher Training Programme Manager Josie. She will be running our next Cert TESOL teacher training course in September.

Here is some information about her:

I’m Josie and I was born and raised in the east of England. I qualified as certified EFL teacher at the age of 22, and I obtained a Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching two years later. I’ve been an EFL teacher for 20 years and I’ve taught both online and face-to-face classes to students from all around the world. I’ve also lived and worked as a teacher/trainer in five different countries: Thailand, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, and the UK.

I'm the Trinity Cert TESOL Teacher Training Programme Manager at Odils, and I’m the main tutor on the Cert TESOL course.

Andy, our Deputy CEO and Stuart, our Employment Projects Manager & Business Engagement Lead, recently went to the OCSW Business Engagement Breakfast.

This was a fantastic opportunity for networking. where they heard about the exciting new opportunities for apprenticeships offered by On Course South West (OCSW).

Last week our evening ESOL classes had an end of term party. They had a fantastic time with food and playing games in English.

Andy, our deputy CEO, said, "Our students have worked so hard to pass their ESOL and Functional Skills exams. It was a wonderful celebration of achievement, friendship and community cohesion!".
