Hello

My name is Edel, and I’m the new chief executive of Mencap. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well at this difficult time. As we all do our best to keep others safe by staying apart, I felt it was important to reach out to everyone who supports Mencap to offer my personal warm wishes.

As someone who cares about Mencap, I know you’ll be thinking of the 1.5 million people with a learning disability across the UK and wondering how they’re being affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

I want to reassure you that Mencap will continue to provide our frontline support for those who need us most during this time of uncertainty.

Our support workers continue to deliver outstanding care and support to the people who rely on them, keeping them safe and caring for them if they become ill, often putting themselves into harm's way. And the rest of the Mencap family are doing all they can to support them - they really are our superheroes.

Our helpline is fast becoming a lifeline for thousands of isolated people with a learning disability and their families.

Online, we’re providing up to date information on coronavirus in easy read format, and our online community continues to provide expert advice and emotional support for people with a learning disability and their families. We're still holding online discussions and providing a place for people to come together.

At Mencap we're very proud of our positivity - so in that spirit, here's a good news story from one of our services:

Support worker Nicola quickly realised that the new social distancing measures would mean the people she supports could no longer go to the shop every day to buy a drink and a snack – a hugely valued part of their routine which they would struggle to change. So she improvised, popped to the shops herself and set up her very own corner shop in the summer house at their residence. Now the people she supports can buy their drinks and snacks safely at the bottom of the garden, making this challenging time a little easier for them.

It’s the small acts of kindness like this that make the Mencap community truly special. Whatever happens, we’re in this together, and I personally couldn’t be prouder to be part of this community with you.

Take care,

Join us tomorrow, Friday 17th January, at Community House for our latest Friendship Friday workshop CREATIVE SELFIES with Sal Fox of Light & Soul Photography.

Camera shy? Don’t worry we completely understand that posing in front of a camera might not be everyone’s cup of tea which is why we’ll work with you to make sure your self-portrait is stress free. You won’t need your own camera although you will need to bring along something that speaks to your soul. Something you’ve made, enjoy or are good at; a craft, book, musical instrument or even a favourite item.

Warning: this will be a duck-face free zone!!

**11am-3pm. Tomorrow, Friday 17th January. Community House, Selby. £3 donation. Refreshments and lunch provided**
