The Gardeners Rest
A community-owned pub in Neepsend, serving great beers and supporting local people - 'more than a pub, a community hub'.
We currently only accept card and contactless payments. Last orders will be called and doors closed 15 minutes before closing time.
One of our many special customers is Jonathan Evans.
'Jonno' to his friends, from Rotherham, came in to see us in his favourite Sheffield pub earlier this year.
Jonno and Paul - from the Gardeners Rest board - have worked together and been mates for over 20 years, supporting vulnerable people and notably being commitee members and volunteers of the Rotherham Branch of the NAS (The National Autistic Society). Jonno has now been the chairperson of the branch for a number of years.
At the present time Jonno is still as busy as ever. This includes drama and dance with 'Life Act', challenging discrimination and performing for groups and schools across Yorkshire.
He is also a part of the team at Sheffield Hallam University's 'Partners in Learning', teaching students the skills to work with people with lifelong learning issues. This also includes interviewing students who want to access the relevant courses and can Influence those courses in social work and nursing.
Jonno says he likes the Gardeners Rest because it is a Community Pub, for it's quirkiness, for the support it provides and offers to local groups, for the charity fundraising, and, oh yes, the beer that it serves!
Cheers Jonno! We are very much looking forward to the next time that you come in to see us.

The Gardeners Rest
The Gardeners Rest is nestled in the fast-changing district of Neepsend, one mile to the north-east of Sheffield, and it is the only operating pub in a district that is famous for its connections with the gas, steel and rail industries in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The area lost much of its population in the last quarter of the 20th century as traditional industries declined and shops, pubs and schools closed.
The recent regeneration of the adjacent Kelham Island district, the approved demolition order on the old Neepsend Cannon Brewery across the road, the conversion of old industrial buildings into flats, and the emergence of a local bakery and Peddlers Market are early indicators that the formerly industrial area of Neepsend is now back on the map.
The Gardeners Rest, which opened in 1898, remains a much-loved base for a diverse community of individuals and community groups, many of whom come together to socialise and choose to make the pub their home from home.
In June 2016, the Gardeners Rest was unofficially put onto the market for sale. A small number of regulars established the Gardeners Rest Community Society (GRCS) with the aim of inviting like-minded people to invest in the society so that it could buy the pub and bring it into community ownership. It was decided by the Interim Directors of the Society to launch a Community Share Issue to raise the required funds.
