Following the Balmullo Burns Club AGM this evening, and the lack of interest in the Burns Supper in January this year, it has been decided that the Club will be in abeyance for 2 years, and if no further interest is shown, then Balmullo Burns Club will close.

How about this for Burns Night ...

RECIPE: Try our heavenly haggis & cheese scones ... just in time for Burns Night! 😍

Ingredients:
1lb/500g self-raising flour
4oz/100g margarine
Pinch of salt
1oz/30g mature Scottish cheddar
2oz/60g grated uncooked haggis
2 beaten eggs
Milk to brush

Method:
1. Set your oven to 165C/330F/gas mark 3.2. Rub the flour, margarine and salt together until the texture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
3. Mix in the cheese and haggis, and then add the eggs and enough milk to create a soft dough mixture.
4. Turn out onto a dry floured surface and roll to about 1.5 inches/4cm thick.
5. Use a scone ring cutter to cut out your scones.
6. You can brush the top of the scones lightly with milk or beaten egg to give a stronger colour if desired, but this is not essential.
7. Place them on a metal baking tray and cook in the oven for 15–20 minutes until lightly browned on top.
8. Enjoy! 🤤

According to legend, a group of farmers were sitting in an Inn in midwinter, discussing how to brighten up the long cold and dark evenings. They decided to get together with friends to celebrate the anniversary of Robert Burns birth, and this annual event grew into what is now a worldwide Federation.

So it was, that a group of locals sitting in the Balmullo Inn decided to brighten up the winter evenings in the village and formed the Balmullo Burns Club in 1980 and held the first Burns Supper in 1981, followed by a series of Scottish Musical Evenings, throughout the year.

The original four, were Bob Crowe, Jim Cameron, George Spence and Mitch Mitchell, with Jim, George and Mitch ably standing up to Address the Haggis, giving the Immortal Memory, Toasting the Lassies and giving various recitations.

Bob Crowe organised the music, asking local piper Bill Duff to pipe in the Haggis for the first Supper, a task he still performed at the 40th Anniversary Supper in 2020.

Along with Scottish Evenings, the Club have also sponsored and judged the Balmullo Primary School Burns Competiton , presenting trophies and prizes.

Over the years, with the decline of interest and increasing costs, the Scottish evenings have come to an end, and the Club have only run an Annual Burns Supper in the Balmullo Inn.

Although most of the Committee retired for a variety of reasons after the 'lockdown', the Club now have a new Committee, who wish to have the Burns Supper made available to a larger local number, and so the Supper has moved to Burnside Hall, Balmullo.
