Supply chain disruptions are causing serious threats to customer loyalty for retailers. Data provided by software provider Retail Insight has shown that 82% of brick and mortar shoppers agree that they have experienced items being out of stock when shopping. Online shoppers have also seen a 6% rise in out of stock items across web stores.

Retail Insight CEO, Paul Boyle, highlighted the consequential loss of loyalty saying:
“Regardless of the causes – of which there are many and, rather unjustly, a great number remain outside a retailer’s direct control – poor product availability doesn’t just impact customer experience at the shelf edge. It can cost retailers lost sales and, even more detrimental, long-term loyalty.”

“It is vital that clinicians have access to the latest technology to save staff time, deliver high quality care and help cut waiting lists – one of the government’s top five priorities."

Integrated care systems have been invited to submit bids for £30 funding that is being made available by the Department of Health and Social Care. Based on local need, the funding could be used to cover technology to support wait lists, virtual wards, wearable devices to monitor chronic conditions, and more.

An article recently published by Digit News discusses the impact that outdated and inefficient technology is having on patient care, and the challenges faced by many surgeons throughout the country.

A study that was carried out on behalf of global health technology firm, Medtronic, to gain further insight into these ongoing issues, found that over half of the surgeons who took part in the survey agreed that current technology in operating rooms is inefficient, and could negatively affect how patient care is delivered.

General Manager and Vice President of Digital Technologies in the Surgical business of Medtronic, George Murgatroyd, said when discussing the survey: “The results of this study clearly demonstrate that outdated technology is holding surgeons back every single day”.

Leaked report accuses ICSs of ‘driving up cost’ by stockpiling supplies | HCSA 25/04/2023

A recent review commissioned by NHS Supply Chain has criticised healthcare trusts and systems for their inadequate inventory management efforts.

Poor inventory management is an ongoing issue within the NHS nationally. The review found that half of the eighty-three trusts that took part had no inventory management system in place and lacked stock visibility and control because of this.

Inventory management systems that make use of barcode scanning technology can provide significant cost and time savings, as well as improve efficiencies in integrated care systems.
The review identified that by ensuring “fewer out of stock [items] and excess inventory”, significant cost savings could be realised, estimating between £71 million and £150 million in initial working capital savings, and between £18 million and £52 million savings in operating costs.

“Improved inventory management at local level is the single biggest recommendation to unlock reduced cost and improved service and resilience at local, regional and national level”.
